One theme of the film Up is that the point of an adventure is the experience, not the destination. The main character, an elderly man named Carl Frederickson, has been obsessed his entire life with travelling to Paradise Falls. This mystical land is his inspiration for attaching balloons to his house to make it fly. Once he gets there, however, his experiences with characters like Dug, Kevin, and Russell become much more important than the setting. He eventually abandons his house, along with his dream of living in Paradise Falls, in order to protect the people and animals he has grown to love. (SpringBoard) Carl Frederickson, in the movie Up, learned that it doesn t matter where your adventure takes you, but the experience it gives you. Before Carl s wife dies, they dreamed of living in Paradise Falls. Determined to pursue their dream, Carl travels to Paradise Falls in his house that is attached to balloons. When Carl, his floating house, and Russell, the Boy Scout, arrive at Paradise Falls, a large rare bird named Kevin follows them as they are walking the house to Paradise Falls. Little did they know that Carl s childhood hero was looking for a rare bird that shared a close resemblance with Kevin. Carl s childhood hero has his friends captive for stealing his bird, Kevin. Carl realizes that his friendships are more important than his journey to Paradise Falls. Learning about how much he cared for his friends helped him move on, and have an adventure of his own. (4)
The development of Russell and Carl s friendship in the movie Up is central in teaching us about what things in life matter most. When Carl was little, he had a dream to go to Paradise Falls. When he is finally on his way to go to Paradise Falls, a young boy named Russell seems to get his way and they head out on an unexpected adventure. On the journey Carl takes, he meets Dug the dog, and Kevin the bird, who become his friends. By the time Carl s adventure comes to an end, even though he fails to get to the falls, Carl realizes that company and friendship are what he truly needs. Watching these characters in the movie Up helps us also realize that friendship can be the greatest adventure. (3.9) In the movie Up, friendship was their greatest adventure. When Russell got mad and ran away, Mr. Frederickson threw all of his belongings out of his house to go and find Russell. Also, when Kevin got caught in a rope, Mr. Frederickson saved her life at the cost of his burning house. Mr. Frederickson developed a great love for Russell, Kevin, and Dug, and he chose them over his precious home. Mr. Frederickson s friendship was his greatest adventure to Paradise Falls. (3.9)
The movie Up shows that friendship is an important characteristic in life. When Mr. Frederickson chooses to leave Kevin and save his house, Russell goes away to save the bird. Mr. Frederickson realizes that Ellie would have wanted him to do the right thing, and friendship was more important than his house. He goes after Russell, and together they help save Kevin, who is trying to get back her babies. Giving up his nice home on top of Paradise Falls to help save a friend was the right thing to do. (3.3) The setting of Paradise Falls in the movie Up plays a big part in the theme. I think the theme in Up is that it s the experience in adventure that makes the trip exciting, not arriving at your destination. Carl Frederickson has dreamed all his life of going to Paradise Falls, so he ties many balloons to his house, and flies it there. On the way, he meets a young boy named Russell, a talking dog named Dug, and colorful bird named Kevin. Together, they fight off Charles Muntz and his ferocious dogs. Carl Frederickson s destination of Paradise Falls contributes much to the theme of there s more fun in the expedition than the destination. (3.2)
On Mr. Frederickson s journey to Paradise Falls in South America, he meets several new people and friends that change his perspective of the world. He meets a young nature explorer, Russell; a chocolate eating bird, Kevin; and a talking dog, Dug, who has an evil master. Dug s evil master wants to capture Kevin to regain his fame. When this happens, Mr. Frederickson, Russell, and Dug are on another journey to return Kevin to his home. When this conflict appears, Mr. Frederickson soon sees more than the annoying tendencies in these characters, but sees instead how trusting they are, and how they look out for one another. Then, Mr. Frederickson helps return Kevin to his family, Russell receives his assisting the elderly patch, Dug is taken care of by Russell, and Mr. Frederickson moves himself into the Oak Woods retirement home. (3) Once you make a promise it sticks to you for the rest of your life. In the movie Up, Mr. Frederickson and Ellie (his wife), make a promise that they would save up to go to Paradise Falls. As they grow older, Ellie became sick, and soon died; that meant that Mr. Frederickson had to make that promise come true. Mr. Frederickson kept his promise and traveled to Paradise Falls, with a few more characters, Russell, a boy scout; Dug, a talking dog; and Kevin, a giant bird. He realized that having friends or family is very important, during his ups and downs. (2.9)
Sometimes friendship is all that matters. Instead of saving his (Mr. Frederickson s) house, he saves Russell, Dug, and Kevin. Mr. Frederickson has also brought Kevin home, than taking his house where it needs to be. Mr. Frederickson starts to care about Russell, Dug, and Kevin, even though they annoy him sometimes. After the adventure, Mr. Frederickson realizes that friendship really matters. (2.7)
