2008-09 PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS BASKETBALL Contact: Mike Lund, Assistant Athletics Director/Media Relations 503.725.5602 lundm@pdx.edu www.goviks.com GAME 1 NOTES November 10, 2008 VIKINGS TRAVEL TO RICE FOR 2008-09 SEASON OPENER The much-anticipated return of the Portland State men s basketball team takes place this Saturday, when the Vikings go on the road to face Rice University in a non-conference season opener. PSU, the defending Big Sky Conference Champion, will battle the Conference USA opponent for just the second time ever in a 1 p.m. Pacific Time tip-off. The game is the first of 30 scheduled contests, excluding the 2008-09 post-season. And, of course, the Vikings expect to add to that total next March as they have been picked as the favorites to win the Big Sky Conference again this year. Portland State won a preseason exhibition on Nov. 5, 101-78, over Division II Western Oregon. Portland State comes off its best season in a school history - a 23-10 campaign in 2007-08 - in which it on the Big Sky Conference regular season (14-2), the Big Sky Tournament, and advanced to face eventual national champion Kansas in the NCAA Tournament. Big Sky Coach of the Year Ken Bone (54-39) begins his fourth season on the Park Blocks. Big Sky Player of the Year Jeremiah Dominguez (14.1 ppg, 4.1 apg, 84 3-pt FG) returns to run the point guard position for the Vikings. The Vikings have three returning starters and six returning letterwinners from last season s team. Three Division I transfers who redshirted last year will also be available. Entering this week s practice, Coach Bone had yet to set a starting lineup for the opening game. The home opener is Nov. 18 at the Peter W. Stott Center against crosstown rival University of Portland. Big Sky play starts on Dec. 20 with a home game against the University of Montana. THE ROAD BACK TO THE POST-SEASON Portland State will travel extensively in the 2008-09 preseason, playing at Rice, the Great Alaska Shootout, Washington, Cal Poly, Gonzaga, Texas Southern and Baylor. PSU will host crosstown rival Portland, NCAA Tournament team Cal State Fullerton, Seattle and Lewis and Clark in the preseason. The Vikings will also get to host an ESPN BracketBuster game for the first time after being a road team in three previous appearances. But, the Vikings know their ticket back to the Big Dance goes through the Big Sky Conference Tournament. Portland State went 14-2 in the Big Sky last season, then won both Big Sky Tournament games. As a result, PSU takes a 14-game winning streak over league opponents into the coming season. The 16-game league schedule will determine the conference champion and tournament host in 2009. Portland State will be featured four times on the Big Sky Conference televised game of the week as it attempts to bring the postseason tournament back to the city of roses. PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS VS. This year s team returns three starters and six letterwinners. They will play at brand new Tudor Fieldhouse. It is, in fact, so new that a capacity has not yet been established for the building. Senior guard Rodney Foster leads the team afgter averaging 11.2 point and 3.1 assists per game last year. Junior guard Lawrence Ghoram averaged 8.5 points and 3.9 rebounds. Junior guard Corey Pflieger averaged 8.0 points and 3.8 rebounds. The Owls averaged just 55.9 points per game last year, shooting only.379 from the field and.273 from three-point range. A QUICK LOOK AT THE 2008-09 VIKINGS The Vikings were 23-10 in 2007-08, winning the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles, and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. In his fourth season on the Park Blocks, Bone has a 54-39 record. He has six returning letterwinners and three returning starters, including Big Sky Conference Player of the Year SR G Jeremiah Dominguez (5-6, 14.2 ppg, 4.1 apg, league-leading 62 steals, school-record 84 three-point field goals). Dominguez was recently named a preseason Mid-Major All-American. He is a little warrior, and he is a competitor, said Bone. He just brings to every game and every practice and every drill. It s exciting to see kids like that get rewarded with that type of recognition. Other returning starters include JR F Kyle Coston (6-8, 5.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 41% 3-pt FG) and SR G Andre Murray (6-2, 9.1 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.0 apg). Also returning are JR F Tyrell Mara (6-6, 4.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 40% 3-pt FG), JR F Julius Thomas (6-5, 4.0 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 71% FG) and SR G Mickey Polis (5-8, 3.2 ppg, 50% 3-pt FG, 82% FT). The Vikings are bolstered by three transfers to aid in the loss of first team All-Big Sky Conference Deonte Huff, and Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year Scott Morrison. Expected to have a big impact after redshirting last year are JR F Jamie Jones (6-7, University of Portland), SO F Phil Nelson (6-7, University of Washington) and JR G Dominic Waters (6-1, University of Hawai i). Those three kids are all good players, and they will all contribute in their own way. I think they will be very good, said Bone. Newcomers include three letter of intent signees: SO G/F Paul Guede (6-5, Tallahassee CC), FR G/F Wendell Wright (6-5, Mayfair (CA) HS) and JR C Donatas Visockis (6-10, Butte (CA) JC). The Vikings also have three walk-ons in SO G Dane Johnson (6-1, Western Oregon), SO F Louis Lee (6-7, Clark CC) and FR G Austonn Lazoff (6-2, Konawaena (HI) HS). I think we have the team to compete with the better teams in the conference, said Bone. I feel comfortable with the talent we have, and the attitudes we have. I feel better about that than probably anything, that we have a lot of kids just totally buying into what we are trying to achieve. Bone, on the Big Sky Conference: I believe there will be more parity in the conference this year. It seemed like it was a little down last year overall, and I don t foresee that happening this year. I m happy with where we are at as a group. But right now, on November 5, it doesn t make a whole lot of difference. PORTLAND STATE PICKED TO WIN BIG SKY AGAIN IN 09 Defending Big Sky Conference Champion Portland State will enter the 2008-09 men s basketball campaign as the league favorite for the first time in history. The Vikings have been selected by the coaches and the media to capture the Big Sky Conference men s basketball preseason polls. Portland State, coming off the best season in school history, earned seven of nine first-place votes from the coaches and 63 total points. The Vikings earned 23 of 26 first-place votes from the media and 212 total points. The polls were released by the league. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. Complete polls are listed on page eight of this release. The Vikings were 23-10 in 2007-08 and won the Big Sky regular-season title, finishing 14-2 in conference. The Vikings won their first-ever postseason championship, downing Northern Arizona 67-51 in the title game. As a result, Portland State earned a first-ever berth in the NCAA Division I Tournament in school history. The Vikings lost to eventual national champion Kansas in the first round. Portland State enters 2008-09 having won 14 straight games against Big Sky Conference opponents and 10 straight games at home. The Vikings have also won six straight Big Sky Conference road games - a school record. The Vikings won a school-record 23 games in 2007-08, setting or tieing 17 school records. Bone, who begins his fourth season at Portland State, has improved the program from 12 wins to 19 wins to 23 wins over the past three seasons. His 54-39 record is the best by a Viking coach since basketball returned to the Park Blocks for the 1996-97 season and joined the Big Sky Conference. Bone is 312-157 in his 16-year coaching career. DOMINGUEZ NAMED MID-MAJOR PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN Portland State point guard Jeremiah Dominguez has been named to the 25-member preseason Mid-Major All- American team by collegeinsider.com. Dominguez, a senior from Salem, OR, was the Big Sky Conference Player of the Year last season when he led the Vikings to a conference title and the NCAA Tournament. He averaged 14.2 points, 4.1 assists and made a school-record 84 three-point field goals. Dominguez is the only player from the Big Sky Conference named to the team. 2008-09 PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS BASKETBALL 2 HEAD COACH KEN BONE Ken Bone is in his fourth season as Head Coach of the Portland State Vikings. He has already made his mark as one of the school s greatest basketball coaches. Bone led Portland State to its finest season in school history in 2007-08, leading the team to a school-record 23 wins, winning the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles, and making a first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament. Portland State s 23-10 record and 14-2 Big Sky mark were the best ever in the history of the program. The Vikings concluded the season with 14 straight wins over Big Sky opponents. As a result, Bone earned Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year honors - becoming the first Viking basketball coach ever to do so. When the Viking program joined the March Madness fray for the first time last season, Bone had finally brought it to the national stage. The Vikings took a firstround loss to eventual national champion Kansas, but a standard had been set for Portland State basketball that had not been achieved before. The accomplishments of the Viking program under Bone in 2007-08 were remarkable: A school-record total of wins (23) and Big Sky wins (14). A school-record tying nine-game winning streak at the Division I level. A 14-game Big Sky Conference winning streak. PSU finished the year with a 10-game home winning streak and school-record six game Big Sky road winning streak. Portland State set or tied 17 school records. The Vikings featured the Big Sky Conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year (Jeremiah Dominguez), the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year (Scott Morrison), and a first team All-Big Sky selection (Deonte Huff). Bone became the first Viking coach to be named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year, and with a 54-39 record has the most wins and best winning percentage of any PSU coach since basketball was reinstated in 1996-97. Portland State has improved from 12 to 19 to 23 wins in Bone s three seasons at the helm. Bone reached 300 career wins during the season. In 16 seasons as a collegiate head coach, he has a 312-157 record. Bone has a strong background in college basketball in the Pacific Northwest, having spent 12 seasons as the Head Coach at Seattle Pacific (1990-2002), compiling a 253-97 career record, and three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Washington (2002-05), where the Huskies were 58-35. In his 12 seasons at Seattle Pacific, Bone s teams won six conference championships and made eight NCAA II playoff appearances. At Washington, Bone played a role in the rise of the Husky program as it made two NCAA tournament appearances in three seasons, won the 2005 Pac-10 title, earned a number one seed in the NCAA tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16. Bone, 50, is a 1983 graduate of Seattle Pacific.

Portland State, which finished the 2007-08 season ranked 25th in the Mid-Major poll, is listed as 27th heading into the 2008-09 season. Gonzaga is ranked number one in the Mid-Major poll. Rather then assembling first, second, third and fourth team squads, the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major All-America team is one team consisting of 25 players and honorable mentions. Division I coaches and NBA scouts are part of the selection process. Mid-major schools consist of teams from non-bcs conferences. collegeinsider.com PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN TEAM Josh Alexander, Stephen F. The Vikings, defending Big Sky Conference Champions, were making their first appearance since last year s record run to the NCAA Tournament - albeit in an exhibition - and they didn t disappoint. PSU shot.676 from the field in the first half, and went on a 25-7 run over a five-minute stretch just before intermission. Eight different Vikings scored in the run. Portland State trailed 30-29 with 6:53 left in the half, but eventually went into the locker room with a 54-41 lead. Western Oregon, a Division II member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, never got closer than 10 in the second half as the Vikings rolled to a 23-point win. The Vikings finished the game shooting.583 from the field. PSU scored 36 points off 25 Western Oregon turnovers. The Vikings had 18 steals, led by five from Jeremiah Dominguez. Six Portland State players scored in double figures, led by Phil Nelson with 19 points off the bench. Nelson, a sophomore transfer, hit 7-11 shots from the field. Another transfer, junior Dominic Waters, got the start and scored 11 points with eight assists and two steals. He did not turn the ball over in 29 minutes of play. Jamie Jones, also a junior transfer, scored 16 points on 8-9 shooting, had three assists, three blocks, three rebounds and two steals in just 19 minutes. Travis Kuhns scored 26 points with eight assists for the Wolves. Mike McLaughlin added 12 points and 11 rebounds. QUICK NOTES FOR 2008-09 HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE Portland State has gone 81-28 in 109 games at the Stott Center since the 1996-97 season. Including home games at Memorial Coliseum (12-6) and the Rose Garden (19-9), the Vikings are 112-43 at home over the previous 12 seasons. UNITED NATIONS OF PORTLAND STATE Portland State will feature players from four different countries this season. Of course, there are 12 players who are natives of the United States of America. JR F Tyrell Mara, the longest-tenured Viking player is from White Rock, British Columbia. SO G/F Paul Guede is a native of London, England. JR C Donatas Visockis is from Siauliai, Lithuania. WALK-ON ADDED TO ROSTER FR G Austonn Lazoff has been added to the Viking roster giving Portland State a total of 15 players for 2008-09. The 6-2 Lazoff earned a spot on the roster during preseason open tryouts and will redshirt in 2008-09. He competed at three different high schools during his prep career, but finished as an all-conference player in Hawai i. Lazoff graduated from Konawaena High School in Captain Cook, HI. He averaged 19 points and eight rebounds per game and was named to the Big Island Interscholastic Federation first team. Lazoff attended Milwaukie High School as a freshman and sophomore, then Tualatin High School as a junior before transferring to Hawai i. CONRAD ELECTS NOT TO ENTER SCHOOL Jason Conrad, who had signed a letter of intent with Portland State last November, will not attend or compete at Portland State this year. Conrad, a 6-11 center from Gilroy, CA, has not entered school for personal reasons. JEREMIAH DOMINGUEZ NAMED BIG SKY CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE YEAR When the Big Sky Conference handed out its 2007-08 men s basketball post-season awards, the Portland State Vikings were standing at the front of the line. Junior Jeremiah Dominguez was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year as he was selected first team All-Conference. Morrison earned second team All-Conference and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Dominguez, a 5-6 guard from South Salem High School, was the spark that ignited the Vikings all season. He averaged 14.2 points, 4.1 assists, had 62 steals, and made a school-record 84 three-point field goals. Dominguez shot.471 from the field,.433 from three-point range,.813 at the line and was twice named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week. He led the Big Sky in free throw percentage, steals, and three-point field goals, while ranking third in scoring, assists and three-point percentage. Dominguez is the second Viking in history to be named Big Sky Conference Player of the Year, while Morrison is the second Viking to be named Defensive Player of the Year. Former Viking Seamus Boxley earned both honors following the 2004-05 season. Boxley was also Defensive Player of the Year in 2003-04. As for the Newcomer of the Year award, Dominguez becomes the fourth Viking to earn the honor in the last 11 years (Jason Hartman, 1997-98, Ime Udoka, 1999-00, Dupree Lucas, 2006-07). Dominguez was twice named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week during the season. He was named to the Big Sky All-Tournament team as well. KEN BONE NAMED BIG SKY CONFERENCE COACH OF THE YEAR Portland State Head Coach Ken Bone was selected as the 2007-08 Big Sky Conference Men s Basketball Coach of the Year in a vote of the league s nine head coaches. Bone, in his third season on the Park Blocks, guided the Vikings to their highest win total in school history, a Big Sky regular-season and tournament title, and first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance. Portland State went 14-2 to win the Big Sky regular-season title. The Vikings then defeated Idaho State, 72-61, and Northern Arizona, 67-51, to win the Big Sky Conference Tournament and receive the conference s automatic NCAA bid. The Vikings lost to number-one seed Kansas in the opening round of the tournament to complete their season at 23-10. The Vikings 23 wins marked Portland State s first-ever 20-win season at the NCAA Division I level. The Big Sky regular-season title was Portland State s second since reinstating men s basketball and joining the Big Sky, prior to the 1996-97 season. PSU set or tied 17 school records during the 2007-08 season. Included were 14 straight wins over Big Sky opponents, nine straight wins overall (a school Division I record), and six straight Big Sky road wins. Bone has a 54-39 record at Portland State and has led the Vikings to the Big Sky Tournament in all three seasons. He is the first Portland State head coach to win the Big Sky Men s Basketball Coach of the Year Award. 20-20 VISION For the first time in school history, Portland State had both its men s and women s basketball programs win 20 games in the same season. PSU s men were 23-10, while the Viking women were 22-9 in 2007-08. The 20-20 win total has occured 12 times previously in Big Sky history. PSU s men and women were a combined 27-8 against Big Sky opponents, and 26-2 at home overall. Throw in the Portland State women s volleyball team in 2007 (21-8 overall, Big Sky Champions at 13-3, and 10-1 at home), and PSU s three teams that compete in the Big Sky and at the Stott Center were 66-27, 36-3 at home, and 41-11 against Big Sky opponents (including two titles). FOR THE WINNING LINEUP, INCLUDE THESE TWO Portland State had two players who were the biggest winners in the 2007-08 starting lineup: SR G Andre Murray and JR F Kyle Coston. The Vikings were 18-4 with Murray starting and 14-3 with Coston starting. Those two also came up big in the Big Sky Tournament. Coston was named to the All-Tournament team, scoring 22 points with 10 rebounds, seven assists and two blocked shots in the two games. Murray scored 24 points with six rebounds and three assists. THE PERCENTAGE PLAY: JULIUS THOMAS JR F Julius Thomas led the Vikings in shooting in 2007-08, hitting.714 (45-63) from the field. He missed just 18 shots in 26 games played. Thomas shot 21-25 (.840) in Big Sky Conference games... Thomas was particularly good in the Big Sky Tournament, scoring 13 points (4-5 FG, 5-7 FT), with nine rebounds and six assists in 45 minutes of play... in his brief career, Thomas has made 107-160 shots for a.669 field goal percentage... he missed seven games with a broken rib preventing him from getting enough shot attempts to break his own school record for shooting percentage (.639) set in 2006-07. THREE AT A TIME Portland State led the Big Sky Conference in three-point field goals made (8.91) and three-point percentage (.393) in 2007-08. PSU shot a season-high.647 mark (11-17) at Montana State (2/28), then made a season-high 14-25 at Montana (3/1)... the Vikings were far better shooting the three than the previous year (6.6 three-pointers and a.333 shooting percentage)... eight players on the Viking roster made 19 or more three-pointers, 10 made 11 or more. 2007-08 BIG SKY LEADERS In season statistics, JR G Jeremiah Dominguez led the Big Sky Conference in steals (1.94) and three-point field goals made per game (2.63). SR C Scott Morrison led the league in blocked shots (1.66)... as a team, the Vikings lead the league in scoring (73.9), scoring margin (+5.8), three-point field goal percentage (.393), three-point field goals made per game (8.91) and three-point field goal defense (.344)... in conference only games, SO F Kyle Coston led in three-point percentage (.521), while Morrison led in blocked shots (2.00) and Dominguez led in three-pointers 2008-09 PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS BASKETBALL 4 VIKING MEDIA RADIO: Portland State basketball is in its third year on AM 910 KTRO in Portland. VIKINGS IN THE GARDEN Portland State played three games in The Rose Garden in 2007-08, winning all three. Two were Big Sky Conference Tournament wins, and a third came over Lewis and Clark during the preseason. The Portland State program is now 19-9 all-time when using the Rose Garden as a home court. Prior to a Dec. 5, 2007 game with Lewis and Clark, PSU s last appearance in the Rose Garden was a Dec. 12, 2001 game against Oregon State. 2008-09 SEASON PREVIEW What will they do for an encore? That s the question that Portland State fans will be asking this year as the Vikings are coming off the best basketball season in the program s history. Portland State made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament last year after capturing the Big Sky Conference championship, the Big Sky Tournament title and winning a school-record 23 games. Even a first-round loss to eventual national champion Kansas couldn t dampen the excitement of the 2007-08 season. Now, fourth-year head coach Ken Bone and a half-dozen returning players must try to live up to heightened expectations for Viking basketball. The good news is Portland State appears primed to do just that. Although PSU lost five seniors and two key starters from last season, a strong core returns along with three talented redshirt transfers and three national letter of intent signees. We definitely have a target on our backs, said Bone. We are the defending Big Sky champions and people are going to be ready for us every game. We are in a different position than we were last year, so we need to be at our best mentally and physically every game to have close to the kind of season we had last year. Bone, who was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year in 2007-08, has led the Vikings to elevated status as the team has gone from 12 to 19 to 23 wins in his three seasons, improving from fifth to fourth to first in league play. In addition, the Vikings rewrote the school record book, setting 12 team records and five individual records in 2007-08. RETURNING PLAYERS Big Sky Conference Player of the Year Jeremiah Dominguez returns to the point for the Vikings for his senior season. Dominguez was brilliant last year averaging 14.2 points, 4.1 assists, hitting a school-record 84 three-point field goals to lead the Big Sky Conference, and making a Big Sky-best 62 steals. Dominguez was twice named Big Sky Player of the Week, earned first team All-Conference, Big Sky Newcomer of the Year and was named to the Big Sky All-Tournament team. Dominguez brings playmaking, scoring and leadership abilities to the program. It won t be easy for him to repeat what he did last year, but he is a very determined individual, said Bone. Also returning is backcourt mate Andre Murray, a 6-2 senior. After entering the starting lineup late in the preseason, Murray took off. He averaged 9.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, but those numbers improved to 10.9 points and 4.6 rebounds in conference play. The Vikings were 18-4 with Murray in the starting lineup. Junior forward Kyle Coston is the third member of the starting lineup returning. A 6-8 shooter, Coston hit 39 three-pointers at a.406 clip for the season. Coston got better as the season progressed, shooting.521 from threepoint range in conference play and averaging 7.6 points against conference opponents. PSU was 14-3 with Coston in the starting lineup, and he earned Big Sky Conference All-Tournament honors. Tyrell Mara, also a junior forward, was a starter early in the year and averaged nearly 19 minutes per game. Injuries slowed Mara at midseason, but he averaged 4.7 points per game and shot.403 from three-point range. Backup forward Julius Thomas is an active interior player despite his 6-5 stature. Thomas shot.714 from the field, averaging 4.0 points and 3.1 rebounds in 14 minutes per night last season. Thomas, who has shot.668 from the field in two seasons at PSU, will also be a junior in this year. The final returning player is senior guard Mickey Polis, who served as a backup at the point last season. Polis shot.500 from three-point range in limited minutes. Portland State led the Big Sky Conference in three-point field goals made (8.91 per game), and three-point percentage (.393). That figures to continue in 2008-09 as the six returning lettermen combined to make 208-504 three-pointers, a.413 mark. We have a number of guys that can shoot the three. We need to utilize that with the deeper three-point line, extend the defense so we can drive the ball, then use our post players effectively, said Bone. NEWCOMERS We lost seven guys (from last year) and everyone contributed in what we achieved, said Bone. So, we are fortunate that waiting in the wings are three redshirt transfers. We lost a tremendous amount from a championship team, but we have some guys that can come in and play right away. As if the long-range shooting talent already on the floor weren t enough, the Vikings will welcome a pair of redshirts in 2008-09 who can also fill it up from outside. Sophomore forward Phil Nelson, a transfer from Washington, will be ready to prove he is one of the best three- 2008-09 PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS BASKETBALL 5 WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT VIKING BASKETBALL Portland State University, located in Portland, is the largest school in the state of Oregon with more then 27,000 students enrolled in the fall of 2008. PSU was founded in 1946 as Vanport College - a two-year institution. Athletically, Portland State began as a junior college in 1946-47, but competed in the Oregon Collegiate Conference (NAIA) beginning in 1948-49 to 1964-65. PSU became a four-year institution - Portland State College - in 1955. The Vikings won five OCC titles and competed in the NAIA playoffs twice. Portland State joined the NCAA in 1965-66. The Vikings reached the College Division playoffs in 1966-67. College Division was the forerunner to Division II. Portland State was given university status in 1969. During the 1970s, Portland State competed as a Division I program. The Vikings biggest star was Freeman Williams, who still ranks as the second all-time leading scorer in college basketball history behind Pete Maravich. Williams, a Division I All-American in 1978, scored 3,249 points in his career. The university dropped the men s basketball program in 1981 for budgetary reasons. It remained dormant until 1996-97 when basketball was reinstated and Portland State joined the Big Sky Conference. PSU has had six winning seasons in its 12 years as a member, including three of the last four. Portland State won the Big Sky Conference regular season title in 2004-05 (19-9, 11-3), but lost in the Big Sky Tournament semifinals, missing a chance for the NCAA Tournament. In 2007-08, the Vikings won the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles going 23-10, 14-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The resulting NCAA berth was the first at the Division I level for the Viking program. The Vikings lost to eventual national champion Kansas, but concluded the most successful season in school history.

point shooters in the Big Sky Conference after a redshirt season. In fact, the 6-7 Nelson, originally from Keizer, OR, may be the best shooter the Vikings put on the floor. His size, like Coston s, will allow him to get a lot of open looks on the perimeter. Junior guard Dominic Waters, originally from Portland s Grant High School, is a transfer from the University of Hawai i. The Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2005-06, Waters shot over 40% from three-point range in two seasons with Hawai i. He should provide a presence as a combo guard in the coming season. Helping to shore up the inside game will be junior forward Jamie Jones, who played two seasons at the University of Portland before transferring to PSU last year. Jones averaged 10.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, blocked 31 shots and shot.507 from the field in 2006-07 with the Pilots. Bone signed a post to help fill the absence of four-year letter-winning center Scott Morrison. Junior college transfer Donatas Visockis is an experienced player having competed one year at Southern Mississippi and one year at Butte (CA) JC. At 6-10, 235, Visockis should be battle ready for the Big Sky Conference. A pair of 6-5 swingmen are expected to have an immediate impact for the Vikings in the coming season. Junior college transfer Paul Guede can play on the perimeter and comes to the Vikings as a talented defensive player. Freshman Wendell Wright is a late addition, signing a grant-in-aid with the Vikings in June. He had originally signed a letter of intent with Loyola Marymount, but was released from that contract after the Lions had a coaching change. Portland State also has a pair of sophomore walk-ons in Dane Johnson and Louis Lee. Johnson, was the Freshman of the Year in the Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference last season while at Western Oregon and provides great depth at point guard. Lee, a 6-7 forward from Vancouver s Mountain View High School, played at Clark Community College last year. Another walk-on, Austonn Lazoff, is a guard who will redshirt this season. 2007-08 SEASON REVIEW The Portland State Vikings men s basketball team produced the finest season in the school s history in 2007-08, compiling a 23-10 record, winning the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament championships, and making a first-ever trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament. Losing a first round game to number-one seed Kansas at the NCAA Midwest Regional did not dampen the Vikings spirits, as they had a host of outstanding achievements to look back on. A short list of the season s highlights: 2007-08 HIGHLIGHTS FOR PORTLAND STATE A school-record total of wins for the season (23-10) and in the Big Sky Conference (14-2). IT S ALL ABOUT THE WINS With a record-breaking 108-56 win at Montana on Mar. 1, the Portland State Vikings reached a first-ever 20-win season at the NCAA Division I level. After completing the season with 23 wins, the Vikings set the all-time Portland State record for wins in a season. Three of the top four winning seasons at the Division I level have come over the last four seasons. Portland State won 20 or more games three times prior to becoming an NCAA member in 1965-66.
