Welcome to the Second Annual Ludvigson Stock Farms Dakota Bull Sale. We feel that this is an outstanding offering of Red Angus, Red Hybred and Red Simmental yearling bulls. This group of bulls fit the Dakota region very well offering high growth high maternal sire lines that will be very successful in this part of the world. We have over the years marketed cattle throughout the U.S. and our client base is quite wide throughout the country. We made the decision in 2013 that we would be begin to develop regional centers throughout the U.S. to better service our customers and at the same time develop genetics that are suited for a local geographic area. This business plan laid the way for us to establish not only a bull sale but also a nucleus herd north of Mandan in the area of Price. We are working with three great families in the development of supplying Red Angus, Red Hybred and Red Simmental genetics to the Dakotas. The Alan Heim family is responsible for the day to day operations running the Dakota Nucleus herd. Long time commercial cow calf operators that are some of the best stockmen and stockwomen in the business. The Price family, some of the most innovative agricultural business people that we have every encountered, are in charge of bull development. The third piece to our Dakota operation is the Justin and Carrie Deckert family who are the major contributors to our Red Hybred and Red Simmental offering. The Deckert s have been long time family friends and are some of the best seedstock operators in the country. The Deckert s have been under the radar the last few years but we feel that this family is ready to take its place as one of the premier seedstock operations in North Dakota. Look to see several beef industry impact herd bulls to come from this program. As many of you know, we have over the years instituted a multi-trait selection model that optimizes selection for calving ease, growth, maternal and carcass traits. We feel that by using a selection model geared toward optimization that we can provide genetics that increase overall profitability for our customers. We have been contributing data to Lee Leachman s patented $Profitability model and database for the last few years. We initially began providing selection indexes based on his models last year and you will find those indexes in our catalog again this year. These indexes are presented in the form of% breed rank for $Profit, $Ranch and $Feedlot. The lower the number, the higher the breed rank for that particular trait. $Profit encompasses both the profitability on the ranch as well as the feedlot. $Ranch is the ranking for the bull based on the traits that return the most to the ranch. $Feedlot ranks the bulls solely on their feedlot performance and their carcass potential. $Profit is explained in much more detail on page 5 of this catalog. If you have questions please feel free to call me to discuss these numbers in more detail. If we can be of assistance to you in making reservations or travel plans, please feel free to contact us. The sale headquarters will be the Baymont Inn and Suites formerly the Best Western Seven Seas Hotel located just off I-94 at the Sunset Drive exit. We will host a Cattlemen s Seminar, hospitality hour and dinner the night before the sale at the headquarters and we would like to invite everyone to join us. We look forward to seeing you on February 21st and 22rd. Orion Beef Group Reputation Red Angus and Hybreds Dakota Bull and Female Sale February 22, 2016 Selling 102 Red Angus, Red Hybred and Red Simmental Bulls Missouri River Feeders Center, North Dakota 1 PM CST Our Program Ludvigson Stock Farms is a family operation established in 1954. Our roots are based in the commercial cow calf and cattle feeding sectors. We understand what is needed to be successful in these areas and it has shaped our breeding philosophies in the genetics that we produce. Our Dakota Cowherd We merged with Strawberry Ridge Red Angus in 2013 and moved that herd to Mandan, North Dakota this fall. We are working with the Randy Schmidt Family to run this nucleus herd just north of Mandan. The Strawberry Cows have a significant influence from the historic Larson Red Angus herd and specifically the Larson Flo Marie cow family. This herd has been selected for generations to maximize growth and maternal. We think that this herd perfectly fits the beef production systems in the Dakotas. Our Dakota Genetics We have established a breeding philosophy over the years that incorporates optimizing multiple traits without over emphasizing any single trait. Weare utilizing several indexes to select our lines of cattle at this time which include the patented Leachman $Profit Index as well as the two new Red Angus indexes, Herdbuilder and Gridmaster. We are taking a strategic approach to where we target our various lines of genetics and we plan to emphasize growth, maternal and carcass for the Dakota region. Abundant resources in this area of the country allows for maximizing production outputs and we feel that we have the lines that can best meet producers production goals. Our Bull Development We are working with the Price Family who own and operate Missouri River Feeders near Price, North Dakota, which is just 20 miles north of Mandan. The Price s have a long and historic presence in the area and run one of the best development centers anywhere in the country. The bulls are fed a high roughage ration designed to produce a 3.0 ADG with 0.2 of an inch of backfat. The bulls are available for viewing at any time but please contact the office at (701)663-5772 for directions and scheduling. The Deckert Nucleus herd grazing the lush North Dakota pastures Our Team - Families Working Together Ryan Ludvigson is our main marketing representative and oversees the Dakota Performance Group. Park Ludvigson is our main breeding specialist and the architect for the direction of our various breeding lines. He is also in charge of our data collection and information systems. In addition to this he runs our semen sales division. The Justin and Carrie Deckert Family we have a very long history with this well known seedstock family. The Deckert s are an integral part to our Red Hybred and Red Simmental program with years of knowledge and experience producing some the most sought after seedstock in the Dakota s. We are leaning heavily on them to help us design and manage the Dakota program. Brian Brigham is a recent addition to our staff. Brian has been coordinating all of the Growsafe Systems at Colorado State University for the last three years. In addition to this, Brian is also our in house geneticist and is helping us develop individual herd indexes for our customers. Brian will be a real asset to all of our customers through our "enhanced" customer service program. The Price Family The Price s are some of the most innovative agricultural entrepreneurs that we have encountered in years. We look forward to working with them not only in the development of both our bulls and replacement heifers but also in their plan to help young producers finance herd expansions. Our Customers Our customers play an integral and ongoing part in our breeding program. It would be impossible for us to remain competitive without constant input by our customers. We have had many customers from the Dakotas and the surrounding states over the years and we feel that we can better serve these customers by locating a nucleus herd in North Dakota designed specifically for that environment and those production systems. Seminars We will be holding several toolbox seminars in North Dakota that will help our customers to put the right animal health, genetics and marketing tools in their toolbox to make them more competitive in this fast paced beef industry. We look forward to sharing our program and genetic focus in these seminars as well as bridging relationships with feeders and commercial cow calf producers. $Profit - The Next Generation of Cattle Evaluation Why $Profit helps: Today, ranchers have too much data to study. With over 20 traits, buying the best bull has become really confusing. We have actual weights, adjusted weights, ratios, and then a host of EPD s. Every bull is good on some traits and weak on others. The challenge is figuring out how each of those traits is going to impact your bottom line. We wish we truly knew which bull would make the most money from birth to slaughter, but most of the time, we end up guessing. Back in 2005, Leachman Cattle started working with the BIO group out of Canada. The goal was to come up with one number that sorted the bulls on their bottom line impact. Since 2005, Leachman s have calculated and selected for $Profit. Through test herds, cooperator herds, and feedlot performance data -- $Profit has been proven to work. The same technology used to calculate $Profit is now being used by Verified Beef to estimate the value of feeder calves. Verified Beef will certify the Relative Market Value of your calves through their Reputation Feeder Calf program. This program uses $Profit to predict the value of the calves in the feedlot and on the rail. This will allow you to earn premiums on genetically superior calves. How $Profit works: $Profit assumes that the average commercial bull will have 100 progeny over its lifetime. Let s compare a $10,000 $Profit bull to $6,000 $Profit bull (the average 2008 born Angus bull). The predicted difference between the bulls is $4,000 or about $40 per calf. The model assumes that you keep 30% of your heifers and that you retain ownership on the remainder and sell the finished animals on a grid. We realize that many don t retain ownership, but with the Reputation Feeder Calf program, you can get paid and sell at weaning. Feedlots have already proven their willingness to pay premiums for superior $Profit calves. What traits are included in $Profit: $Profit includes nearly every trait that impacts profitability. The effect of most traits on profit is fairly simple to understand. Here is the list of what is included: Revenue Traits Calving ease = more calves Weaning & yearling EPD = more weight Fertility (days to conception) = more weight & more calves Carcass weight = worth more up to 1050 lbs. Marbling = valued based on the grid premiums Ribeye area = value as impacts yield grade % Retail Product = more yield Cost Traits Cow mature size = bigger eats more Cow intake = more intake costs more Feedlot feed efficiency = cost of gain Some traits are not so easily characterized as more is better for $Profit. Milk, for example, is a good thing until you get too much. In the $Profit model, each pound of milk EPD over +25 has a more negative effect on fertility than it has a positive effect on weaning weight. There are a few traits not yet included in $Profit: longevity, structure, and disposition. These traits are important but difficult to express in dollars. Index selection has been proven to work in chickens, pigs, and dairy cows. There is little doubt that it can accelerate the rate of genetic improvement in beef cattle as well. That is why we have decided to provide $Profit to our bull customers. The technical team at BIO consists of Dr. Steve Miller, Dr. Peter Sullivan, and independent consultant, Brian Pogue. Dr. Miller helped design the $Profit simulation model. Dr. Peter Sullivan calculates all of the underlying EPD s for the Leachman program. Each month, Dr. Sullivan analyzes the database and updates our $Profit predictions. Brian Pogue works to ensure data integrity and model accuracy. This great team excels at generating the $Profit index exclusively for Leachman Cattle of Colorado. Bio is a company with a mandate for genetic improvement. Their science is leading edge in a number of different areas. BIO has estimated Across Breed Comparison EPD s on commercial and seedstock cattle in Canada since 1988. Economic simulation models have been used to generate indexes since 1996. BIO works in conjunction with the Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock (CGIL) at the University of Guelph in the development of new technologies for beef cattle improvement. For further information on BIO or CGIL visit their websites: www.biobeef.com and www.cgil.uoguelph.ca 5

OPTIONS AND PRIVILEGES OF RETURN OR ADJUSTMENT: 1. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either within six month of the sale date or no later than six months after the animal reaches 18 months of age with the exception of claims involving defects or parentage. 2.
