10th annual Edie Creek Angus RUGGED 2YR OLD ANGUS BULL SALE ASHERN AUCTION MART Saturday 1PM MARCH 11 2017 Moderate - Maternal Easy Calving - Easy Fleshing

THE BOUW FAMILY 1

Welcome to the 10th Annual Edie Creek Angus 2-Year Old Bull Sale! Welcome & thanks for your interest in our unique genetics, & for supporting us in the past. Our goal is to provide commercial cattle producers with genetics that improve their profitability & reduce the labour required to raise beef cattle. Our cowherd is run tougher than most commercial ranches. 2016 also saw the final phase of expansion in Jonathan s family, as he & Eileen were blessed by the healthy safe arrival of identical twin baby boys Lukas & Kian! Now Stefan & Jonathan both have 2 sons & 2 daughters, which is considered a tie among competitive brothers! This also means home life is very busy at this stage in life for both young families, which helps us hone our focus on efficiency around the farm Calving in May/June has reduced our workload & stress immensely. We also believe it makes us more profitable. This past year was another year of excessive rainfall here, at least 25 inches during the year, after 28 the previous year. This brought numerous challenges, including trying to make dry hay between neardaily rain events, and nutritionally hollow washy wet grass, but it also reinforced the positive changes of holistic planned grazing, which gave plants adequate rest periods, and allowed pastures to provide ample grazing, without (for the most part) serious damage. The lack of frost before snowfall means we still have bales out in the field to haul, with the soft ground still wet, insulated by the heavy snowfall. One of our adventures this year was an aggressive Embryo Transfer program, in which we purchased 50 Fleckvieh-Red Angus-X heifers to act as recipients. 41 of them were deemed eligible on implanting day, and preg-checking seems to indicate that roughly 50% of embryos implanted were successful, which is the industry norm. We have high hopes for these home-raised embryos to improve the quality of our cowherd, as well as the offering of bulls we ll have to offer. There are 4 E.T. bulls selling this year as a result of previous years successful embryo programs. This embryo program, along with the purchase of 28 open heifer calves from Howrey Angus in South Dakota are part of our plans to expand the herd from 150 to 250 head in the next few years. Our plan is to convert hayfields into pastures and count on purchasing more of our winter feed instead of making it ourselves. This is part of our goal to provide more quantity of the same quality of bulls, so that our bulls will be more affordable going forward. With much gratitude, Jonathan & Stefan Bouw & Families CFCC Pride 5893R, Dam of 30 2

~ Philosophical Musings on the Breeding & Production of Beef Cattle ~ Our end goal here at Edie Creek Angus is to produce the perfect (Angus) cow. Our definition of that perfect includes optimal levels of milk (not maximum), reproductive longevity (aka fertility), and unmatched excellence in the conformation & phenotype traits that maximize profit for cow-calf producers by utterly minimizing labour requirements at calving (cows with tight udders, easy-to-find teats, plus ample maternal instincts), and whatever else is needed so that cow produces a healthy saleable calf at weaning. Sounds simple, right? Actually, the complexity of the art which is breeding cattle, is what makes it so fascinating for us. We have learned that it will be a lifetime journey of constant learning. It will include some failing and some success, but each calf crop will be better than the last. Stefan and I travel to meet and learn from breeders that have been on the same journey in pursuit of the perfect cow. We appreciate advice from breeders who value opportunities to mentor those willing to learn. We listen to wise commercial cattle producers who have found the chase for maximum weaning weights has not guaranteed profit, but rather are seeking to maximize pounds of beef produced per acre, and have been finding that optimal balance between cutting feed costs & still having pregnant cows to be profitable. One astute observation from a commercial cattleman (Todd McPeak, ND) was that creep feeding calves distorted his selection of replacement females because the heifer calves that looked the best were the ones who spent the most time at the creep feeder because their dams had the lowest amount of milk production and they were looking for more groceries. Selecting replacement heifers from cows with low milk production was the opposite of his goal, but he was duped by the very strategy he hoped would increase his production! The same lesson was shared to us by Greg Golden of Cole Creek Angus in Montana. Doesn t mean you shouldn t use a creep feeder, just don t expect an improvement in the maternal efficiency of your herd if you re picking replacements that were raised on creep feeders. Ideally, keep a separate maternal herd to select replacements from, and then maximize weaning weight in your terminal herd, & meet whatever specs your buyers want. That also brings to bear the importance of maximizing heterosis/hybrid vigour by ensuring the purity of the parent stock! We use line breeding to concentrate the genetics of proven individuals, and to increase the heritability of the traits that you, our customers buy our bulls for. Back to our goal, we have chosen Angus as the breed we are working within, because we believe there are many options for Angus to be used complimentarily with other breeds, and because we had started with Angus before we had the vision to set our goals. We are now familiar with the Angus gene pool well enough to know what works & doesn't work in an non-pampered real ranch environment. We now use performance testing, A.I., & E.T. to select within our gene pool, and are tightening the screws on reproductive longevity by shortening our breeding seasons for both heifers and cows Heifers only saw a bull for 42 days, and the cows saw Angus bulls for the first 42 days, and a Fleckveih bull for the last cycle Thus ensuring only the most fertile females produce offspring we can select purebred parent stock from. The focus of our breeding goals remains to increase the profitability of the commercial cattle producers by offering consistent, quality genetics that enable them to improve their efficiency, increase the reproductive longevity of their cowherds in harsh commercial ranching environments, & reduce their input costs of feed & labour. 3

Bull Development These bulls have been raised on their mothers milk and grass. They were weaned on Dec. 1st, then brought in and fed Grass-Alfalfa silage with 2 lbs of Barley and free choice 1st cut hay. In June they were turned out to pasture, with no supplements, where they grew well until the end of November 2016. At this time, they came home and received a Grass- screenings plus free choice hay. They have not been pushed with hard feed so that they will breed longer for you. These are hard muscled bulls, not dough boys. Bull Program Bulls can be kept at Edie Creek Angus for $2/day until May 1st. After that, the cost will be $3/day. Free delivery available to Ashern Auction Mart. If you haul your bull on Sale day we will give you a $50 discount on each bull. Bulls MUST be insured if they are to be kept on our farm. TERMS AND CONDITIONS The terms of sale are by cash or cheque. We will not provide the replacement or credit for a bull that is physically injured or mismanaged. It is the responsibility of the buyer to insure their bulls. * BULL RATINGS EXPLAINED: Calving Ease: Based on the bull's birthweight, his parents' birthweight, and his own EPD's. Also based on the assumption that the bull will be breeding small-framed Angus/British cattle--if the bull will be breeding larger-framed Continental cattle, a three-star () bull may work on heifers without any trouble. These are simply guidelines to help your decision making. You are ultimately responsible for the matings of your own cattle. Calving Ease Rating: "*" - Suitable for breeding cows only - 100 lb+ Birth weights possible ** - Suitable for breeding smaller cows-90 lb+ Birth weights possible "" - Suitable for breeding cows and larger-framed, mature heifers - 85 lb BW s "" -Suitable for breeding heifers & cows too * -HEIFER BULL, easy deliveries with vigorous calves at birth! Rating: Based on the quality of the dam's udder structure and teat shape and size. Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be an average, functional udder, while a score of "5" would be a perfectly level udder with small, shapely teats. Rating: Designed to predict the ability of the bull's offspring to thrive in a forage-only environment. The forage rating is also a suitable indicator of the bull's own ability to stay in good flesh on a low-energy ration ("easy-keeping-ness"). Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be moderately easy fleshing, while a score of "5" would be very easy fleshing and his offspring would finish on forages alone. 5

E D I E C R E E K You have discovered the direction the Angus breed was known for and should continue to be known for. Fads come and go but it has to be the basics that we all need to stick to: the cow which needs to problem free, calve regularly, raise a good calf close to half her mature weight at weaning and convert the cheapest form of energy available, grass! Efficiently. Congratulations on sticking to your vision. We are very happy and enthusiastic about the bulls we have purchased over the last number of years. They are honestly the easiest keeping cattle we have come across for a long time. The libido of these bulls have been outstanding, with several having breeding group sizes of up to 60 animals. Their daughters are now coming into production in large volumes and are proving to be easy keeping, medium framed, good uddered and good temperament. Keep up the great work! Emblazon 87Y sired the high-seller in our 2016 sale, he sires thickness, moderate birth, & maternal excellence. 49C doesn t like being alone, he gets more nervous than most. 39 EDIE CREEK EMBLAZON 81C 09/05/2015 Reg#1882548 ECA 81c Sire: EDIE CREEK EMBLAZON 87Y OCC EMBLAZON 854E Dam: EDIE CREEK DIXIE ERICA 743K 56 OCC REVOLUTION ROSE 743K * * Performance: bw: 72 ww: 531 yw: 750 Dam s BW: 79 EPD s 2016: bw:-1.2 ww: 28 yw: 43 milk: 19 mat: 33 HEIFER BULL. ECA 81C is a tightly bred deep & muscular Herdsire in the making, and would make a great fit for someone trying to moderate their cow herd in a hurry or raise great grass fed beef. Both parents are embryos from the heart of the OCC program. ECA 81C should breed extremely consistently and create super easy-keeping, maternally great daughters! A rare find here in Canada to have Emblazon up close in the pedigree! 31

His sire ECA 87Y was breeding alongside 1 or 2 other bulls in a multi sire breeding group, so most of these bulls have been DNA verified and their sires have to be aggressive breeders to get the job done. 41 EDIE CREEK EMBLAZON 118C 02/06/2015 Reg#1882562 ECA 118C Sire: EDIE CREEK EMBLAZON 87Y ** RITO 9FB3 OF 5H11 FULLBACK Dam: EDIE CREEK LADY ERICA 38U CROWFOOT ERICA 1652L Performance: bw: 96 ww: 622 yw: 953 Dam s BW: 85 EPD s 2016: bw:+1.2 ww: 31 yw: 57 milk: 22 mat: 38 Another attractive ECA 87Y son.
