CDSOA, Inc. - 5 - Effective: 28 March 2007 Manteo: Probably the most confusing navigational part of this trip is the southern approach to Manteo. The sounds are very shallow and you must follow the markers not your chart plotter when navigating in this area. When you initially look at the chart you will see that Manteo can be approached via either the Croatan sound or the Roanoke sound. The Croatan Sound approach has two bridges, the 65 bridge and the old hwy 64 bridge which only has 45 of clearance. This is not an option for most CD s. You must use the Old House Channel approach to Roanoke Island when coming from the south. ( Same from the North heading to Pamlico Sound) It is always shoaling Oregon Inlet and Bodie Island Inlet and special attention needs to given to the change from Red to Green Markers. Markers not even on the chart are in place and location changes of the smaller cans occur often. Pay very close attention and proceed with caution. If you stay in the channel you will have no problem. A good book to own is Claireborne Young s Book on the ICW. Remember that there is a large fleet of charter boats coming in and out of this area. If you are being approached by one from behind drop your speed to only minimal power and let them get by you. They are generally returning for fishing charters in the mid to late afternoon.
