Feliciano Lopez leads the draw as the No. 1 seed, followed by Bernard Tomic, Ivo Karlovic, Sam Querrey, Alexandr Dolgopolov, Jeremy Chardy, Nicolas Almagro and Marcel Granollers. One to watch is No. 2 Tomic, who found success here in Mexico at the Acapulco event, where he reached his first ATP World Tour 500 level final (l. to Thiem). The Australian comes in with a 25-18 match record on the season (15-8 on hard) and semi-final appearances in Brisbane and the Queen s Club in London. Meanwhile, a fleet of Spaniards have also entered the singles draw in Los Cabos hoping to claim the event's first trophy. The six Spaniards are (1) Lopez, (7) Almagro and (8) Granollers, as well as Fernando Verdasco, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and wild card Pablo Carreño Busta. Of these six Spaniards, three have won an ATP World Tour title this season: Almagro, Lopez and Verdasco. Lopez is the top seed for the second straight tournament. At his last event as the top seed in Gstaad, the 34-year-old claimed his fifth career ATP World Tour title. There are also six Americans in the main draw, headed by the fourth-seeded Querrey, who captured his eighth career title earlier this season at Delray Beach and upset World No. 1 Novak Djokovic en route to the Wimbledon quarter-finals. Young American Reilly Opelka, who reached his first semi-final at Atlanta (l. to Isner) in just his third ATP event, is a special exempt entry into Los Cabos. As the youngest man in the draw, the 18-year-old went into Atlanta at No. 837 before rising to a career-high No. 395 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. The oldest player in the draw, 37-year-old Karlovic, has seen success this season with his seventh ATP World Tour title in Newport (d. Muller), which he followed as a runner-up in Washington (l. to Monfils). He also reached the 3R at ATP Masters 1000 Toronto (l. to Dimitrov). Karlovic was bothered by a knee injury in the first three months, starting 0-6 (and 2-9). Since the beginning of Roland Garros, Karlovic has compiled a 16-6 record, winning at least one match in his last seven events. Representing the host country are the top two Mexican players in the Emirates ATP Rankings. No. 530 Lucas Gomez and No. 567 Tigre Hank each received wild cards, and both are trying to win their first career ATP World Tour match. Gomez and Hank are both 1-7, their lone win coming in Davis Cup play.
Page 2 of 5 DAY 1 PREVIEW: Two seeded players, Nicolas Almagro and Marcel Granollers, will take action on Day 1 of the Abierto Mexicano Los Cabos. First up to begin play for the tournament is Granollers, who faces countryman Fernando Verdasco. The Spanish veterans are separated by only one spot in the Emirates ATP Rankings, with Verdasco climbing two spots to pass the eighth-seeded Granollers and reach No. 46 after the seedings were already made. Following will be Mexican wild card Tigre Hank against American Austin Krajicek for a spot in the second round. Hank is seeking his first ATP World Tour win. The night match features American qualifier Noah Rubin against the No. 7 seed Almagro, now ranked two spots behind Verdasco and one behind Granollers as the World No. 48.
