The cheerleader s primary purpose is to support athletic events and facilitate school spirit. Please keep in mind the importance of the obligation that you have made to devote your time and efforts to cheerleading. I. Purpose II. Academics A. A cheerleader s first responsibility is to her academic program. The educational process should not be compromised by participation in cheerleading. B. Each member of the squad has the responsibility to uphold, reflect and to project the goals and ideals of your school, Athletic Department, and the school district. A. Cheerleaders will abide by the Eligibility Rules in the athletic handbook. B. All cheerleaders must be passing their 4 core classes (Math, Science, Social Studies, English) with a 60% in order to be eligible to cheer. Athletic Director will contact coaches each week about grades. C. If a cheerleader becomes academically ineligible, they are to meet all grade requirements before participating in any cheerleading events. III. Attendance ** Being part of the cheerleading team is learning good time management skills!! ** A. Tardiness: a) Being on time is MANDATORY! This means being fully dressed and groomed and ready to begin practices and games. (If you need to change you will be considered late!) b) Being late WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. It s your responsibility to leave early enough to make it on time to practices and games. (Unless an emergency arises). If you are late, even one minute, you must call. c) Three late arrivals or early leaves will result in ONE unexcused absence and could lead to suspension with possible dismissal. d) CALL THE COACH if you are running late. She will then determine whether the case of lateness is legitimate. If it is, the lateness will be excused. Calling a teammate is not a substitute for calling the coach! e) If you are more than 15 minutes late to a practice or game for any reason not known by the coach, it counts as ONE unexcused absence. B. Attendance: a) Schedules will be distributed each month in calendar form by your coach. Keep in mind that situations can change and schedules may be altered. b) If a cheerleader is not in school for at least ½ day, she is not permitted to practice or cheer that day. Excessive absence from school will lead to suspension with a possible dismissal. c) Excused absences include a doctor s appointment with a doctor s excuse, death in the family, illness (phone call required), or religious holiday with a note, one DOCUMENTED college visit per senior. All appointments should be forwarded to the coach in writing for approval one day after the schedule is distributed. d) One unexcused absence will result in a one game suspension. Three unexcused absences will lead to dismissal. Ex: attending school and missing practice, excessive vacations during the school year, all star cheerleading, dance, work, homework. e) Due to safety issues, if you miss a practice before a game, you WILL NOT cheer at the game. f) You must attend ALL practice and games, even if you are injured or unable to cheer. g) Any unexcused absences (practice or games) will result in NOT lettering for that season h) Cheerleaders will ride the bus to and from any game or match unless noted from Athletic Office i) Your responsibility to the team is not fulfilled until the completion of the last game of your season. Whether this during the REGULAR OR PLAYOFF SEASON (girls or boys- VARSITY ONLY).
