A FEW QUICK NOTES - The Lady Rebels bring back four starters from last year s squad that posted a 22-11 record and received an at-large bid to the Postseason WNIT. - UNLV set a new school record with 12 Mountain West conference victories in 2016-17, and that was the most conference wins for UNLV since a 14-4 mark in the Big West in 1993-94 - The Lady Rebels started the season 8-1 and were leading top-25 Oregon State in the fourth quarter, when they lost starting point guard Nikki Wheatley (10.3 ppg) to a season-ending knee injury. Wheatley received a medical redshirt for the season, and comes back as the team s starting point guard this year with two years of eligibility left. This will be Wheatley s fourth straight season starting at the point after taking over the role in December of her freshman season. - After receiving MW Honorable Mention honors and MW All-Defensive team recognition after leading the conference in steals for the second straight year, guard Brook Johnson returns for her fourth straight year in the starting lineup. - The Lady Rebels will have to replace a pair of starters, the Gonzalez twins (Dakota and Dylan), who graduated from UNLV in May of 2017 and have since turned professional in other entertainment areas while also playing for the new Global Mixed Gender Basketball League. The twins combined for 23.1 ppg and 9.4 rpg, while Dakota would earn All-MW honors. - UNLV will return a total of 10 letterwinners from last year, which includes juniors Paris Strawther (6-2) and Katie Powell (6-4). The two starting post players totaled 16.2 ppg and 12.9 rpg between the two of them while pacing the team in blocks. - Two freshmen join the team this year, 6-5 center Krista Jackman from Mohave Valley, Arizona and Kavionnia Brown from Albuquerque, New Mexico. - UNLV has taken their non-conference schedule to another level for the 2017-18 season with potentially the toughest slate in program history. The Lady Rebels have the potential to play six straight games against 2017 NCAA participants. That includes a three-game stretch in which the first two games are against defending Final Four participants, while the second and third game will be against the past two NCAA championship runner-up squads. This will make the first time in program history UNLV has played Final Four teams from the previous year in consecutive games. - The Lady Rebels open the season with five straight at home, finishing with the Lady Rebel Round-Up on Thanksgiving weekend that will feature a second day battle against either Wake Forest or Minnesota. - December could then see the Lady Rebels potentially play in back-to-back games, Arizona State in the ASU Classic (Dec. 2-3), Gonzaga on the road (Dec. 9) and Stanford on the road as well (Dec. 16). ASU and Gonzaga both played in last year s NCAAs while Stanford reached the Final Four before falling to South Carolina. - UNLV will then host the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas on Dec. 20-22, and will face Mississippi State (Dec. 20) and Syracuse (Dec. 22) in its half of the bracket. Mississippi State was NCAA runner-ups in 2017 to South Carolina, while Syracuse played in the 2016 NCAA title game, falling to UConn. - The season opener will be on Nov. 10 against Portland State in the Cox Pavilion. - For the second straight year the Lady Rebels will face the league s defending champion in their MW opener as they will face Boise State on the road on Dec. 30. - UNLV will host Nevada, Reno on Feb. 7 and play in Reno on Feb. 27 for the two games in the Governor s Series, the allsports competition between the two schools sponsored by NV Energy and Barrick Gold.
