ROAD WARRIORS Robert Morris is in the midst of a four-game road swing and an extended portion of the Colonials schedule that will see the team play eight of 10 games away from the Charles L. Sewall Center between now and the turn of the calendars. During that span, RMU will travel 6,644 miles. The longest trip is the the 858-mile journey to Minnesota while the shortest is 94 miles to Kent State. EURO-STATS The contributions of the Colonials European-born players cannot be overlooked. Three of five starters and five of the team s 10 players were born on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean (junior forward Jolie Olingende is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Those European players are accounting for 74 percent of the team s scoring (39.5 points per game). SPANOU EARNS ALL-NEC FIRST TEAM ACCOLADES Junior forward Artemis Spanou earned a spot on the All-NEC First Team last season as she averaged 16.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore. She was one of only 21 players in Division I averaging a double- double and she finished fourth in the nation with 20 double-doubles. Spanou also collected her 500th career rebound, accomplishing the feat in just 51 games. She was 11th in the nation pulling down 10.8 boards a contest. 500 IN 51 Junior forward Artemis Spanou collected her 500th rebound on Jan. 30, 2012, against LIU Brooklyn. She managed the feat in just 51 career games, the second-fastest player in team history to join the 500 Rebound Club. She is the 18th player in team history, and the sixth in the last six years, to reach 500 career boards. THROWING A BLOCK PARTY Senior Anna Gailite is second all-time at Robert Morris with 116 career blocks. At 6 7, Gailite is the tallest player in team history and has used that length to post two of the top-five shot blocking seasons in team history. She had 43 blocks as a freshman and turned away 38 shots last season. She also holds the single-game record with nine blocked shots against LIU Brooklyn (Jan. 7, 2010) in her rookie season. RMU IN SEASON OPENERS Robert Morris opened the season at home for the third straight season and is 13-24 all-time in season openers. With game locations unknown for six seasons, the Colonials have played 17 of 37 season openers on their home court, posting an 8-9 record in those games. RMU is 4-6 in season openers and 4-4 in home season openers under head coach Sal Buscaglia. EIGHT CONSECUTIVE PLAYOFF BERTHS Robert Morris secured its eighth consecutive NEC playoff berth last season. The Colonials have made the playoffs every season since 2004-05 finishing no worse than sixth during that stretch. RMU has finished first in three of those seasons, earning the tournament s top seed in 2010. CHUCK S CHARMS The Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. The Chuck, has lent a certain advantage for the Colonials over the past nine seasons. Since 2004-05, RobertMorris is 92-22 (.807) in home games, including an even more impressive.836 (61-12) winning percentage in home NEC games. ARIZONA WESTERN PIPELINE Junior forward Jolie Olingende continues a distinguished list of transfers from Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz. The 6-1 forward will have high expectations to live up to. Other RMU players from Arizona Western include two-time NEC Tournament MVP Chinata Nesbit and former Colonials point guard Yohanna Morton. Olingende was the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Year last season and an NJCAA All-American as well. INTERNATIONAL LOVE The Robert Morris roster once again features members from all over the world. On a team of 10 players, six hail from outside the borders of the United States while four call America home. Senior Jasmine Tate, juniors Britta Emberg and Kelly Hartwell and freshman Randi Jackson are all US citizens with each coming from a different state. Greece has two representatives on the team in the form of juniors Artemis Spanou and Anna Kavasila. Senior Anna Gailite calls Latvia home while freshmen Lou Mataly is from France and Ashley Ravelli is a native of Italy. Jolie Olingende, from Congo, rounds out the international roster. WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS? The Financier of the American Revolution. He isn t as famous as his friend George Washington, but without Robert Morris, the American colonies bold attempt to throw off British rule never could have succeeded. Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing often using his personal credit to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806. 2012-13 COLONIAL TRENDS At home 0-2 On the road 0-4 Neutral Site 0-0 Overtime 0-0 Home Northeast Conference 0-0 Away Northeast Conference 0-0 Following a win 0-0 Following a loss 0-5 Playing teams w/ winning record 0-2 Playing teams w/ losing record 0-2 Playing teams w/.500 record 0-2 Games decided by 1 point 0-0 Games decided by 2-5 points 0-1 Games decided by 6-9 points 0-1 Games decided by 10 points or more 0-4 Leading at the half 0-0 Trailing at the half 0-6 Tied at the half 0-0 Outshooting opponent (by pct.) 0-1 Outshot by opponent (by pct.) 0-5 Tied in shooting w/ opponent (by pct.) 0-0 Team shoots below 39.9% 0-5 Team shoots 40% to 49.9% 0-1 Team shoots 50% or above 0-0 RMU makes 0-4 three-pointers 0-3 RMU makes 5 to 9 three-pointers 0-3 RMU makes 10+ three-pointers 0-0 Outrebounding opponent 0-1 Outrebounded by opponent 0-5 equal 0-0 Win turnover margin 0-2 Lose turnover margin 0-3 Turnovers equal 0-1 An RMU player scores 20+ 0-2 An RMU player scores 30+ 0-1 An RMU player has 10+ rebounds 0-4 An RMU player has 7+ assists 0-0 An RMU player has 5+ steals 0-0 Scoring 80 or more points 0-0 Scoring 70-79 points 0-0 Scoring 60-69 points 0-0 Scoring 50-59 points 0-3 Scoring under 50 points 0-3 Allowing under 50 points 0-0 Allowing 50-59 points 0-2 Allowing 60-69 points 0-2 Allowing 70-79 points 0-2 Allowing 80 or more points 0-0 Playing in November 0-6 Playing in December 0-0 Playing in January 0-0 Playing in February 0-0 Playing in March 0-0 Playing Monday 0-0 Playing Tuesday 0-1 Playing Wednesday 0-1 Playing Thursday 0-1 Playing Friday 0-1 Playing Saturday 0-0 Playing Sunday 0-2 Playing Day Games 0-2 Playing Night Games (6 p.m. or later) 0-4

Junior forward Artemis Spanou was named to the Preseason All-NEC Team for the second consecutive season. Preseason polls are what they are, said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. Any coach will tell you that they don t remember what they were picked in a preseason poll after media day. It s what you do on the court and throughout the season and at the end of the season that matters. For us to be picked fifth shows a lot of respect for what we ve done over the last nine years - making the tournament semifinals in eight times - considering we have so many new key players this year. Three teams earned first-place votes in the poll led by the Quinnipiac Bobcats with seven. Sacred Heart is second with four first-place votes while Monmouth received one and is third in the poll. Saint Francis (Pa.) was voted fourth followed by Robert Morris in fifth. LIU Brooklyn was selected sixth followed by Mount St. Mary s, Central Connecticut State, Bryan, Fairleigh Dickinson, St. Francis (N.Y.) and Wagner. No question that Artemis, in my view and by the coaches vote, is one of the best players, if not the best player, in the conference, which I think she is. She s been named the MVP of the European Championships two years in a row and it makes me smile to know we have her for two more years, said Buscaglia. Spanou, a two-time All-NEC selection and the 2011 NEC Rookie of the Year, finished fourth in the nation last season with 20 double-doubles. She ranked 11th nationally in rebounding, averaging 10.8 per game, and added 16.8 points per game making her one of just 21 players in the nation to average a double-double last season. As a sophomore, she recorded her 500th career rebound and moved into a tie for seventh all-time at RMU with 632 career caroms. She only needs 69 more points to join the 1,000 point club as well. Her assault on the Colonials record book also includes a couple season records as well. Her 539 points as a sophomore were fifth, 345 rebounds were third and her 131 free throws made were sixth in the team s season annals. 2012-13 NEC PRESEASON COACHES POLL 1. Quinnipiac (7) 2. SAL BUSCAGLIA Head Coach 10th season at RMU 35th season overall Canisius 1976 Robert Morris University women s basketball coach Sal Buscaglia, now in his 10th season at RMU, began the renaissance of Colonials basketball with his arrival in 2003-04. Since he has taken over, the women s basketball program has played in five national tournaments, won two Northeast Conference championships and earned playoff berths in nine consecutive seasons. Not only has Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called, turned the program into a perennial NEC power, but a nationally competitive program. The turnaround could not have been more dramatic. His first squad, in 2003-04, posted a 3-24 record. But given a year to recruit and rebuild, his 2004-05 squad posted a 20-10 record marking the third-largest turnaround in NCAA history and giving RMU its first 20-win season since the 1983-84 season. Perhaps the biggest piece in the recent resurgence of the program came to the forefront that season in the form of Sugeiry Monsac. It also earned Buscaglia the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year award, his first of two such honors during his tenure at RMU. Monsac was a highly-touted recruit sought out by numerous BCS level programs, but when she committed to Coach Sal and RMU, it marked a turnaround. Monsac was named the Player of the Year in 2004-05 and was a two-time All-NEC selection who would score 1,177 points and grab 689 rebounds in just 67 career games. In his fourth season, the team that had gone 1-26 the season before his arrival, Buscaglia had put the Colonials into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after a victory in the Northeast Conference Championship in 2007. That squad finished with a program-record 24 victories to just eight losses and completed the program s resurrection. One year later, Buscaglia and his Colonials repeated the feat. This time around, the squad was led by record-setting threepoint shooting of Sade Logan and the first triple-doubles in team history by NEC Tournament MVP Chinata Nesbit. Coach Sal and his staff put in a dribble-drive motion offense one of just two teams in women s basketball running the offense to take advantage of the team s athletically-gifted guards. Logan would tie the NCAA record with 126 three-pointers that season and RMU posted a 23-10 record. After a 13-18 mark in an injury-marred 2008-09 season, the 2009-10 squad bounced back by setting team records for regular season wins (22) and conference victories (17) while leading the team to its first outright NEC Regular Season Championship and an eventual Postseason WNIT Tournament. The appearance marked the fourth consecutive season RMU played in a national tournament. Angela Pace was the feature player on that team becoming the first player in league history to earn both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Current junior Artemis Spanou made her mark in 2010-11 when she became the first Robert Morris player to earn NEC Rookie of the Year honors. Spanou and her teammates posted a 16-14 mark and led the squad back to the NEC semifinals. Last season, the Colonials went 18-14 overall and 11-6 in league games, returning for the eighth time in the last nine seasons to the Northeast Conference semifinals. The team earned and invitation and the top seed in Women s Basketball Invitational. It was the fifth time in six seasons that Robert Morris was invited to play in a national tournament. In 34 seasons, Buscaglia has put together 11 national tournament runs and has finished with a winning record in 30 of those seasons. He has collected over 600 career victories, 378 of those coming on the Division I level, while posting an overall winning percentage of.678. Before Robert Morris, Buscaglia spent five seasons at Manhattan College (1998-2003). In just his second season at Manhattan, Buscaglia led the Lady Jaspers to a 17-win season, marking the fifth most victories in school history, and was recognized as the 24th most improved team in NCAA Division I. In five seasons at Manhattan, Buscaglia compiled a record of 79-65, including a 20-10 record and NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 2002-03. Buscaglia s Manhattan team received votes in the Top 25 in 2002-03 as the Jaspers claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The MAAC championship in 2003 was the first league title in school history. Manhattan s 20-10 overall record was also the best in school history. In 2001-02 he guided the jaspers to an 18-10 overall record and was named the Co-Coach of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. For eight seasons prior to his arrival at Manhattan, Buscaglia was head coach of the University at Buffalo from 1990-98 and led the Bulls to five 20-win campaigns. In its first season in Division I competition in 1991-92, Buffalo finished with a 23-6 record, which was the 10th highest winning percentage (.793) in Division I that season. The Bulls won East Coast Conference regular season titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994, as well as tournament championships in 1992 and 1994. In 1994-95, Buffalo moved to the Mid-Continent Conference and Buscaglia led the Bulls to a share of the Mid-Con regularseason title in 1995 and an appearance in the conference tournament finals in 1997. In each of Buffalo s first three seasons in the Mid-Con, Buscaglia led the Bulls to at least 20 wins. For his efforts at Buffalo, Buscaglia earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1996. Buscaglia started his coaching career at Hilbert Junior College, in Hamburg, New York, where in 12 seasons from 1977-90 he amassed a record of 249-62. During his tenure at Hilbert, his teams collected 93 straight league wins, eight straight Region Tournament Championships (1982-90), eight straight regular season conference championships (1982-90) and eight straight National Tournament appearances (1982-90). In 1988-89 his team finished in the elite eight. Coach Sal is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. A native of Buffalo, New York, Buscaglia is a 1976 graduate of Canisius with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and accounting and in 1989 earned a Master s Degree in physical education, also from Canisius. In 1980, Buscaglia received a Master s Degree in business education from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Buscaglia, a proud father and grandfather, has a son Charlie, who is an assistant with the Colonials, and a daughter, Deanna. Deanna resides in Elma, N.Y. with her husband Mark and their children Paityn (11), Shane (9) and Eva (6).
