Who can it help? Our instructors are qualified in a huge range of conditions including: Diabetes, Arthritis, Obesity, Hypertension, Anxiety, Depression, Joint replacements, Osteoporosis, Stress, COPD, Asthma and Simple mechanical back pain. How do I join the scheme? Your GP will need to refer you to us, they will send us a referral form and once we have received this one of our fitness staff will contact you to arrange an initial consultation. What will it cost? The initial 10 week course is 40, this includes : the initial consultation, access to the gym anytime in the 10 week period, all health screens and two free GP referral classes a week. Initial consultation Your first meeting will be with one of our qualified instructors, who will do a health screen with you, talk about your condition and take you around the gym equipment to familiarise you with the facility. The instructor will also build a basic programme for you to begin your exercise programme. You will need to wear loose comfortable clothing and trainers as you will be using the equipment during this session. What s next? After your initial consultation you will be able to use the gym whenever you want to. The gym always has an instructor working, so you can be confident that if you need some help or advice there will be someone there to assist you. You will have an attendance record and health screen record that we will keep for you, so you can track the progress you are making over the course. Free Classes Twice a week you will have the opportunity to join a free class specifically for the people who are on the GP scheme. These classes will take place in the Fitness Hub separate to the main gym. These classes will enable you to ask any questions you have, increase and adapt your programme and have another health screen to monitor your improvement. It is also a great way to meet other members who are new to the gym and are part of the same scheme. What happens at the end of the 10 weeks? At the end of your 10 week course, you will have a one to one meeting with one of the fitness staff. They will do a final health screen and discuss how you have improved over the course. You will then be able to join the gym to continue to stick to your new exercise programme in the environment that you feel safe and relaxed, knowing that the staff are always there to help if you need it. 6

As a private pool we have an expanding range of public swimming sessions (see pages 20 21). For the last 20+ years, the pool has been home to our highly successful children s swimming courses, teaching thousands of local children to swim. Our lessons attract hundreds of children each week - led by our team of experienced, friendly and popular swimming teachers. Our swimming lessons are kindly sponsored by the Southern Water Learn to Swim programme. Our programme is expanding - we offer extensive holiday swimming courses - including diving and challenge groups, as well as rookie lifesaving, individual lessons (which are suitable for both adults and children) and training courses for adults who would like to become lifeguards or swimming teachers. How old should I be? Children may join the after school lessons the term in which they turn 5 years old. Children aged from 7 years who have reached an appropriate standard of swimming, may be interested in our swimming challenge awards, survival skills, rookie lifeguard and diving courses. Children and adults of all ages can benefit from individual lessons - 20 minute sessions with a teacher to yourself! WHICH CLASS IS RIGHT FOR ME? These are guidelines, if you are not sure please phone for advice! Absolute Beginners Children may join these classes from the term in which they celebrate their 5th birthday. Absolute beginners is for those children who are unable to swim at all. Children must meet our minimum height restriction of one metre since we do not use arm bands in lessons. Children will be encouraged to submerge their faces - goggles may be worn but we ask that they practice using them in the bath first to get used to them! Beginners For children 5 years and over who are able to doggy paddle a few strokes and are confident in the water. They must be willing to put their faces in the water! They will be taught to swim front crawl as well as float and kick on their backs. Once able to swim a width (8 metres) they may move to a beginner plus group. 17

WHICH CLASS IS RIGHT FOR ME? Beginner Plus For children who are able to swim a width confidently on both front and back, they will be introduced to breast-stroke and when ready, will be given some experience in deeper water - ready to move into an intermediate group. Intermediate These classes are designed to improve the stroke technique and water skills of swimmers who are able to swim confidently at least 15 metres out of their depth, on both back and front. The lessons will be conducted mainly in deep water. Students will remain in intermediate groups until they have achieved a 50 metre badge - which should be swum using a front crawl or breast-stroke in a good style with the appropriate breathing. Advanced This group will improve stroke technique and water skills as well as increasing the stamina of those swimmers able to swim in excess of 50 metres using a good style. Swimmers will work towards their higher swimming awards. Swimming Challenge & Survival Awards This is a course for students who have achieved their maximum swimming distances and feel able to attempt the challenge and/or survival awards - Bronze, Silver, Gold and Honours (ages 8-14 years). Children on the Tuesday advanced groups will be working towards these awards.
