Directions to use Climate Scavenger Hunt Purpose : At the end of this scavenger hunt on climate students will be able to learn on vocabulary of climate and science behind it. 1. Print the given all 24 cards on a card stock or any other good paper and cut them along the black line. 2. Get the print of Climate Scavenger Hunt questions pages and each student should be given this copy. 3. Place Climate Scavenger Hunt cards around the classroom. For example you can place it on chair, on table, on benches, behind the classroom doors, besides the computer or wherever you like. 4. Students have to search the cards in a classroom in order to find out the answers of the questions. Students can complete this exercise in a group with classmate or alone. 2014 Brilliant Classes by Piyush Page 2
Card 1 Climate is an average measurement of temperature, wind, humidity, snow, and rain in a place over the course of years. Card 2 Climate is different than weather. Weather is considered as changes in an atmosphere that occur on a daily basis. Card 3 Polar climates are cold and dry, with long and dark winters. Card 4 Boreal (cold coniferous) forests lie south of the tundra, stretching across much of northern Canada, Scandinavia and Russia. 2014 Brilliant Classes by Piyush Page 3
Card 5 On mountains, the temperature decreases with the altitude and many high peaks are always covered in snow. Card 6 Temperate climate has warm summers and cool winters with year-round rain or snow. Card 7 A Mediterranean climate is found in regions bordering the Mediterranean Sea and in Australia and California. Card 8 Deserts are hot and dry year-round and usually receive less than 10 in (250 mm) of rainfall a year. 2014 Brilliant Classes by Piyush Page 4
Card 9 Dry grasslands are found in the center of continents where temperature variations are extreme. Card 10 Dry grasslands have hot summers, cold winters and little rainfall, so very few trees can grow there. Card 11 Tropical grasslands such as the African savanna, lie between desert areas and tropical rainforests. Card 12 In Tropical grasslands the climate is hot all year, but with a distinct wet season and dry season. 2014 Brilliant Classes by Piyush Page 5
Card 13 Tropical rainforests are found in regions near the equator. Card 14 In Tropical rainforests, the climate is hot and wet all year with temperatures remaining around 80 82 F. Card 15 Five factors which affect climate. They are summarized below: Latitude Altitude Winds Distance from the sea Aspect Card 16 Latitude Temperature range increases with distance from the equator. Also temperature decreases as you move away from the equator. 2014 Brilliant Classes by Piyush Page 6
Card 17 Altitude Temperature decreases with height. The air is less dense and cannot hold heat as easily. Card 18 If winds are warm then they have been blown from a hot area which increases temperatures. Card 19 If winds have been blown from cold areas, they will lower temperatures. Card 20 Land heats and cools faster than the sea. Therefore coastal areas have a lower temperature range than those areas inland. 2014 Brilliant Classes by Piyush Page 7
Card 21 Slopes facing the sun are warmer than those are not. Thus south facing slopes in the northern hemisphere are usually warm. Card 22 Slopes facing north in the southern hemisphere are warmest. Card 23 On the coast winters are mild and summers are cool. Card 24 Mountain climates are usually wetter and windier than lowland regions. 2014 Brilliant Classes by Piyush Page 8
