Hatchery based aquaculture in Palau Bureau of Marine Resource Hatchery Palau Community College Hatchery Airai Rabbit Fish Hatchery 1
Alii Welcome to my Presentation My name is Mr. Percy Rechelluul Local Name: Temekai English Name: Brown-Marbled Grouper Scientific Name: Epinephelus fuscoguttatus Japanese Name: Aka-madara-hata Fish hatchery 2
Bureau of Marine Resources Republic of Palau TEMEKAI SEED PRODUCTION Juvenile grouper 3CM-4CM in size are fed with minced fish Grouper larvae Sorting and grading grouper larvae 3
Temekai cannibalism 35 to 40 days old grouper larvae Fish shelter set in the tank Reduce cannibalism Easy to clean bottom of tank Easy to monitor their activity Easy to feed Easy to harvest 4
Pure culture of chlorella in the lab Mass culture of chlorella Contents 1. Fingerling production of grouper 1-1 Algae culture 1-2 Rotifer culture 1-3 Artemia hatching 1-4 Collection of Plankton 1-5 Brood stock culture 1-6 Spawning 1-7 Fingerling production 2. Future plan 2-1 Aquaculture development 5
1-1 Algae culture Under microscope photo Pure culture in the lab Single cell green algae (marine 2µm) Feed for rotifer culture Water quality maintenance for rearing Fertilizer (Urea, Ammonium sulfate, Super phosphate) chlorella: larval Mass production in the hatchery Isolation of single cell algae by Dilution method 1ml 1ml 1ml x bottles 1,000ml 1,000ml 1,000,000 cells/ml Dilute to 1,000 times 1,000 cells/ml Dilute to 1000 times 1 cell/ml The algae cells increase in some small bottles after two weeks. Check the cells under microscope to select good one. Algae cells under microscope photo 6
Seed stock culture in lab - 1 Selected pure algae cells are inoculate to 100ml frasco Algae cells increased in small glass containers. 1 2 Each containers should not mixed in a Frascos. Algae cells are increased around 10 days later. 3 4 Frascos should be shakes every day. Select one frasco and divided 4-5 frascos to keep as a seed for next. Seed stock culture in lab - 2 100ml of algae are inoculate to 5000ml containers and keep aeration. 4 5 Algae are increased after 10 days and inoculate to 50l containers and keep aeration. 6 7 Repeat the algae culture process from 4-7 and maintain algae in 50l container to start any time out side large scale culture. 7
1-2 Rotifer culture Under microscope photo Rotifer culture tank in the hatchery Initial feed for Temekai larvae Size of rotifer: (length 145µm, width 115µm) Local rotifer size: 110 to 120µm Cultured by marine chlorella and yeast 1-3 Artemia hatching Dried Artemia cysts Under microscope photo of Artemia cysts (220µm) Artemia hatching in the tank Newly hatched Artemia Nauplius (500µm) 8
1-4 Collection of Plankton System of Plankton collection Net of Plankton collection Plankton gathering under the light Pump up the Plankton with sea water during night time Collected Plankton (1-3mm) 1-5 Brood stock culture Capacity of the tank (25 tons) Feeding (trash fish & Vitamin) satiation amount twice/week Sex ratio (M1:F5) Hermaphrodite (F M) Observe their behavior 9
1-6 Spawning Egg collection net set in the evening Collected eggs in the next morning Estimation of eggs & separate the sunken and floating eggs Fertilized eggs of Temekai Size of eggs (940µm) 1-7 Fingerling production Larval rearing tank Newly hatched larvae(1.9mm) 32 day-old larvae (1.5cm) 53 day-old juveniles (4-5cm) 10

2-1 Aquaculture Development 2-1-1 Conduct research on the fingerling production of another important species 2-1-2 Assist aquaculture project 2-1-3 Aquaculture promotion Important species for culture Plectropomus leopardus Cromileptes altivelis Zoea Mangrove crab in berry Sea cucumber 12
Assist aquaculture project Selection & counting of Temekai Juveniles Packing with Oxygen Transport to the culture site Stocked in the floating net cage Aquaculture promotion Selection & counting of Temekai Juveniles Transport fish by pick-up Stocking in the private pond Feeding for Temekai 13
