STEWARDS REPORT Australian Turf Club WARWICK FARM RACECOURSE Wednesday, 30 May 2018 Weather: Fine Track: Soft (6) Rail: +5m 1000m - WP, +3m Remainder Penetrometer: 5.31 STEWARDS: T P Moxon (Chairman), M F Van Gestel, P C Dingwall, D M Greer and cadets M W Purse & R Loughlin (alm) Supplementary Reports: HAWKESBURY: Saturday, 28 April 2018 RACE 7 Livamol Hawkesbury Gold Cup (Group 3) 1600m Mackintosh the Stewards today concluded their inquiry into Mackintosh sustaining a catastrophic injury to its right fore leg which resulted in it being subsequently euthanised following inspection by the official veterinarian. The inquiry on 28 April was adjourned so that the Stewards could interview former trainer Mr C Waller and trainer Mr R Litt and obtain relevant treatment records from both trainers. On Thursday, 24 May 2018, former trainer Mr C Waller and stable veterinarian Dr R Alexander were interviewed relative to the condition of Mackintosh prior to its sale to a client of Mr Litt's on 31 March. Dr Alexander advised that Mackintosh had had a history of feet issues which had been managed throughout its career through corrective shoeing and that Mackintosh had responded well to this treatment. He said that examinations involving the inspection of the fetlock region during its time at Mr Waller's had not revealed any abnormalities. Trainer Mr Litt advised that since arriving at his stables, Mackintosh had been shod by his farrier to treat a sensitive heel in the left fore limb, but had displayed no obvious lameness in the lead up to the race in question. The Stewards today considered evidence from Racing NSW veterinarian Dr T Selig and a necropsy provided by the University of Teaching Hospital Camden which revealed Mackintosh to have sustained a failure of the suspensory apparatus and a disarticulation of the right fore fetlock. After considering all of the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that both Mr Waller and Mr Litt had provided the appropriate veterinary care for Mackintosh in the lead up the race and did not find that there was any obvious pre-existing condition in the right fore fetlock. A pre-race sample taken from Mackintosh was reported by the ARFL as negative to prohibited substances. On that basis the matter was concluded. CANTERBURY PARK: Wednesday, 2 May 2018 RACE 1 Tab.com.au Handicap 1200m Federation the Stewards today concluded an inquiry into the riding tactics of K McEvoy on Federation in the above race. K McEvoy stated that he had been asked to race with cover if possible, however if from a wide draw, the circumstances of the race precluded him deploying this objective, it would be acceptable to the connections to travel outside the leader, though this was not the preferred option. K McEvoy stated that if he were obliged to race forward, he should try to do so by allowing his mount to use its natural gate speed. He said that after beginning well, he assessed that Ms Rodarte would lead, and although he was unaware that Big Bad Bruce had begun only fairly, he would endeavour to steady and attempt to travel one out one back behind Big Bad Bruce. He added that although in the early stages there was an opportunity for him to travel outside the leader he felt that having regard to his instructions it would be contrary to Mr Snowden s expectations to pressure Federation in order to clear Big Bad Bruce, which was improving to his inside, and therefore he sought a position with cover. He added that passing the 900m, he anticipated Press Box would shift in to race

next to the running rail, however when the rider of Press Box elected to remain traveling in a two wide position, Federation was then caught wide and without cover throughout the event. Co-trainers Mr Peter Snowden and Mr Paul Snowden confirmed the instructions issued and advised that Federation at this stage of its career is not overly suited by leading, and in their view, would benefit with cover, however they did impress upon K McEvoy that if the tempo was slow and he was to vie for the lead, he must do so with making little use of Federation as the colt has been racing keenly and being unable to close its races off. Messrs Snowden expressed general satisfaction with K McEvoy s riding of the colt, although conveying some disappointment that Federation travelled wide and without cover. A review of the available evidence did not disclose any betting irregularities. The Stewards advised K McEvoy that his riding in the early stages was indecisive, and that he should have shown initiative by capitalising upon the opportunity to travel outside Ms Rodarte when the opportunity arose. He was further advised that he had been spoken to previously regarding his mounts racing wide and without cover and he must do his utmost to ensure that horses ridden by him do not cover unnecessary ground in future. ROYAL RANDWICK: Saturday, 25 May 2018 RACE 2 Supporterhub Handicap 1400m Heat Haze passing the 200m, rider A Bullock briefly dropped his left rein. RACE 9 Anthony Diprose Memorial Handicap 1400m Schubert - trainer Mr J Cummings advised that the gelding in retrospect was unsuited by being ridden prominently and therefore it will be his intention to have Schubert ridden conservatively where circumstances permit. RACE 1 #Theraces Plate 1200m Sunsuzie the Stewards considered an objection lodged by J Collett, rider of Sunsuzie, against Silent Explorer (K Latham) being declared the winner, alleging interference over the concluding stages. The evidence established that over the concluding stages, Irish Songs was taken out by Silent Explorer, however the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that contact had been made between Irish Songs and Sunsuzie as a result of the shift by Silent Explorer. The Stewards further found that approaching the winning post, Sunsuzie shifted out away from Silent Explorer, which itself was shifting out when under pressure and continuing to hang. As the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that this incident had a bearing on the placings, they dismissed the objection. Writing Unexpected began awkwardly. Silent Explorer was bumped on jumping by Pythia, which shifted out. Trainer Mr D Payne was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding s racing manners, which laid out badly under pressure in the straight. On The White Turf raced wide and without cover throughout the event. Sir Owen when questioned regarding the performance, rider M Walker stated that as the horse has had a history of being slow away, it was the intention for the horse to settle in a position worse than midfield. He stated that after being slow to begin (3L), Sir Owen settled at the rear of the field. He stated that the colt did not initially travel well throughout the early and middle stages, however from the 650m to approaching the home turn, he was satisfied with how the horse was racing and he was confident of its winning chance. He said that when he placed Sir Owen under pressure in the straight, the colt responded only fairly and although it suffered interference close to the finishing line when Sunsuzie was taken outwards, Sir Owen finished, in his opinion, in the best possible place in the race. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Monegal approaching the 200m, had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Sir Owen and On The White Turf, which shifted out. Irish Songs approaching the 100m, rider B Shinn dropped his whip. Rider K Latham (Silent Explorer) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that over the concluding stages, he allowed his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of Irish Songs which was severely checked and lost the running to which it was rightfully entitled. On The White Turf, which was following, was hampered as a consequence. K Latham's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday, 6 June 2018 and to expire Tuesday, 12 June 2018 on which day he may ride. RACE 2 Tab.com.au Plate 1200m Baanone began awkwardly and then from a wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Seasons was brushed on jumping by Temple Run, which shifted out. pressure in the early part of the home straight. Seasons laid in under Temple Run laid out under pressure over the final 100m and near the 75m, became momentarily awkwardly placed on the heels of Seasons. Mascot when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider B Avdulla stated the only instructions he was issued was to, if possible, avoid racing behind the leader on the rail. He said as a result of these instructions, he was positive on his mount in the early stages to avoid being dictated to by runners to his outside and as a result led. He added that near the 600m, Mascot was not comfortable in its action and did not appreciate today's track conditions. B Avdulla said that his mount was only one paced when asked for an effort in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Gambeson when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider K McEvoy stated that the gelding travelled only fairly throughout the run and was disappointing in the manner in which it finished the race off. K McEvoy added that in his opinion, Gambeson will benefit from racing over further distance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. RACE 3 Casino Prince@Vinery Handicap 2200m Eerised began awkwardly. Follow Suit blundered on jumping. Solo Mission laid in under pressure in the home straight. Mazaz approaching the 100m, was crowded when racing in restricted room between Follow Suit and Mornington, which shifted out. Mornington approaching the 100m, shifted out under pressure resulting in its rider momentarily having to stop riding to relieve pressure being applied to Mazas. Hoof Hustler when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider T Clark stated that his mount travelled strongly throughout the early stages, however when able to obtain cover behind Mornington approaching the 1600m, his mount relaxed with him. He stated that he was satisfied with the way the horse was travelling throughout the middle stages, however approaching the 800m, when he asked Hoof Hustler to improve, the gelding did not respond to his urgings and weakened under riding from this point. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth undertook to report back on the post race condition and future race plans of Hoof Hustler.

RACE 4 TAB Handicap 1600m Boomtown Rat was slow to begin. Saint Katarina was bumped on jumping by Verlan, which shifted in. Kurnel Jaxon raced greenly and shifted ground on a number of occasions when under pressure in the home straight. Staggering laid in under pressure in the straight. Verlan when questioned, rider S Guymer was instructed to race back in the field today and those instructions were similar to those issued to him when successful on the filly at Newcastle on 19 May 2018. He said that after beginning fairly, he shifted his mount in behind runners in the early stages. He stated that his mount then raced keenly throughout the early and middle stages and approaching the 900m, when in his opinion the tempo of the race slackened, as his horse was continuing to overrace, he shifted Verlan to the outside of Surjin and commenced to run four wide without cover. S Guymer added that upon straightening when he placed his mount under pressure, the filly was inclined to hang in and was then disappointing in the manner in which it finished the race off. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. RACE 5 Ranvet Neutrolene Handicap 1600m Nikkas 'N' A Twist slow to begin. Desert Lord slow to begin. Desert Lord raced keenly throughout the early and middle stages. Desert Lord laid out under pressure in the home straight and near the 150m, when struck with the whip, shifted out abruptly. Rider B Avdulla then changed his whip through to the left hand where Desert Lord, when struck again with the whip, shifted back in. Penske began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. Penske raced keenly in the lead throughout the early and middle stages. Q Krogh reported that in the straight, Penske got its head on the side, hung out and proved somewhat difficult for him to ride in his normal manner. See The Master when racing wide and without cover in the early stages was allowed to stride forward and raced behind the leader approaching the 1200m. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. RACE 6 Bowermans Office Furniture Handicap 1100m Empress Matilda made heavy contact with its nose on the gates and was withdrawn at 3.46pm acting on veterinary advice. The Stewards ruled that all monies invested on Empress Matilda be refunded in full and that all successful wagers made prior to 3.46pm be subject to the following deductions in the face value of each ticket. 1 st Soothing 13 cents win, 11 cents place 2 nd Nic s Vendetta 9 cents place 3 rd Ready For Love 14 cents place Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse s barrier manners. Paris For Me slow to begin. Paris For Me was held up rounding the home turn and had difficulty obtaining clear running until inside the 150m. A post race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the near hind fetlock. What Could Be despite being ridden along in the early stages failed to muster speed and from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Coolotta from its wide barrier was shifted across behind runners shortly after the start. Ready For Love raced keenly in the early stages.

Profiler raced keenly throughout the middle stages Soothing raced wide and without cover throughout the event. Soothing laid in under pressure in the early part of the home straight. Nic's Vendetta inside the 300m was bumped by Soothing which shifted in. Nick On The Run approaching the 100m was obliged to shift to the outside of Profiler and over the final 50m, was unable to be fully ridden out when racing in restricted room between Ready For Love and Magicus. Misery a post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. RACE 7 Australian Turf Club Handicap 1300m Red Zephyr was a late withdrawal at 10.35am acting on veterinary advice. Catmosphere hung out rounding the home turn and in the straight and as a consequence, was unable to be fully ridden out by its rider in his normal manner. Hail The Hero from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Hail The Hero was held up rounding the home turn and did not fully obtain clear running until approaching the 200m. Hammond Lane for a short distance passing the 200m was held up on the heels of the weakening Bombardier and was shifted to the outside of that runner to continue into clear running. Inquiry laid out under pressure over the final 200m. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Bombardier when questioned, B Shinn said that in his opinion, Bombardier, which was first up today, was not suited by the track conditions and the conditions in which the race was run. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. GENERAL: Summary of whip use The Stewards noted the following rider exceeded the permitted strikes of the whip prior to the 100m under AR137A(5)(a)(ii): Race 3 K McEvoy (Plymouth Road) 6 strikes Bearing in mind the totality of whip use, no action was taken. Swab samples were taken from all winners and the following runners: Race 1: Irish Songs, Silent Explorer, Writing Unexpected, Pythia, Sunsuzie.
