The Tigers will be designated as the home team since they have the higher seed. The games will be played at Salem Memorial Stadium outside of Roanoke, VA. It is the farthest north an ACC Baseball Tournament has ever been held and the first time it has been held in the commonwealth of Virginia. The winner of Clemson s first-round game will play the winner the winner of Florida State s first-round game, who will play the winner of Maryland-Duke play-in game. The winners bracket game will be at 5:00 PM on Thursday. The loser of Clemson s first-round game will play the loser of the aforementioned game Thursday at 10:00 AM. Official livestats can also be accessed on the schedule page. The Starting Pitchers Junior lefty Daniel Moore (6-2, 3.55 ERA) will start the game Wednesday for the Tar Heels. Moore picked up the win at Clemson on May 10 when he pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just one run on five hits. Moore has pitched 76.0 innings this year and has a.271 opponents batting average. Clemson will counter with Jackson (7-2, 3.93 ERA), a junior righthander. Jackson did not pitch at Wake Forest, therefore his last outing came in his career-long 7.1 innings-pitched-performance on May 12. North Carolina Overview North Carolina enters the series after losing two of three games at Virginia over the weekend. The Tar Heels are hitting an ACC-best.321, led by Jeremy Cleveland s.431 batting average. The junior slugger also has 18 homers and 59 RBIs to go along with a.531 on-base percentage. Sean Farrell also has 12 homers and 52 RBIs for the Tar Heels, who are fielding at a.963 clip in 2003. The North Carolina pitching staff has a 4.15 ERA, led by reliever Whitley Benson. The junior righthander has a 3.41 ERA and four saves in 27 appearances. Clemson Overview Clemson is coming off a three-game sweep at Wake Forest over the weekend. The Tigers won 11 of their last 13 ACC games to finish 15-9 overall. The Tigers are hitting.311 as a team, led by McCann s.355 average and 15-game hitting streak. Slevin is also riding an 18-game hitting streak, the longest by a Tiger in 2003. Clemson is 11-12 away from home this year, including 6-6 against ACC teams. Clemson also out-hit its ACC opponents.326 to.285 on the season and has won its last 32 games when out-hitting the opponent. The Tigers sport a 4.01 ERA and.971 fielding percentage as well. Clemson Sweeps Wake Forest Clemson hit.377 and outscored the Demon Deacons 24-8 in a three-game sweep at Wake Forest from May 15-17 to close out the regular season. The sweep gave the Tigers a 15-9 final ACC record, tying with N.C. State for third place. Garrick Evans shined in the series. In just two starts, both as the leadoff hitter, he was 6-for-8 with four runs scored, four doubles, a triple, two RBIs, three walks, and a stolen base. He earned ACC Player-of-the-Week honors thanks to his efforts. Steve Pyzik (.500), Michael Johnson (.500), and Brad McCann (.471) also had outstanding series. McCann (15) and David Slevin (18) also extended their hitting streaks. Meanwhile, Tiger hurlers allowed just eight runs and had a 2.67 ERA against one of the top hitting teams in the ACC. Clemson also committed just one error all series. In game one, Clemson overcame a seasonhigh 16 runners left on base, including at least one in every inning, to win 6-2. The game was suspended on Thursday in the fourth inning with the Demon Deacons leading 2-1. Patrick Hogan pitched the final 6.0 innings, allowing no runs on five hits to earn the win. He earned ACC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors for his effort. Freshman Herman Demmink was 4-for-4 to lead the Tigers 15-hit attack. Four other Tigers also had two hits apiece, while Kyle Frank hit a homer and drove in two runs. In game two, Clemson exploded for 21 hits and cruised to a 14-3 victory over the Demon Deacons. Five Tigers had at least three hits, including four by Evans. Evans had two doubles, a triple, three runs scored, and two RBIs, while Johnson was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, including his 57th career homer. Pyzik was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Slevin had three hits, including his fifth homer of the year. It was one of three Clemson homers in the game, as Ryan Hub hit a long homer as well. Tyler Lumsden regained his early-season form to earn the win, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on five hits. In the series finale, Clemson scored two runs in the ninth inning to sweep Wake Forest thanks to the 4-3 win. Pyzik, who earlier hit his first career homer in his 372nd career at bat, led off the ninth with an infield single. After Evans walked, Johnson tied the score with a single and McCann gave the Tigers the lead with a sharp single to left field. McCann led all Tigers with three hits, while Evans had two doubles. Jeff Hahn allowed just one run in 4.0 innings pitched in relief to earn the win, while Paul Harrelson struck out the only batter he faced to earn his sixth save. Furman Rallies in Ninth For 12-9 Win Just five days after rallying for four runs down in the eighth inning to win, Furman did it again, this time scoring seven runs in the ninth inning to defeat #19 Clemson 12-9 May 13. It was the Tigers last regular-season home game their first loss when leading after eight innings since the final game of 2000, breaking Clemson s 114-game streak. Another costly error doomed the Tigers, as four of the seven runs were unearned. Garrick Evans led the Tigers with two hits and three RBIs, while David Slevin extended his hitting streak to 15 games and Brad McCann extended his to 12 games. Furman out-hit the Tigers 14-6, but the Tigers had 11 walks, compared to two by the Paladins. Clemson s ACC Tournament History Clemson has won eight ACC Tournaments in history, more than any other school. This is the 30th ACC Baseball Tournament and Clemson has been to the finals in 20 of the previous 29 tournaments, 11 more than any other school. Clemson has an 87-45 record in ACC Tournament games. The Tigers also have the most first-team All-ACC Tournament players (41). While Clemson has had unique success in the ACC Tournament, the Tigers will be looking for their first championship since 1994. That was Jack Leggett s first year as Clemson s head coach. Clemson defeated Florida State 4-1 in the championship game held in Greenville (SC) Municipal Stadium. Leggett has been on the field to accept the championship trophy twice, however. In 1993, then Head Coach Bill Wilhelm was suspended for the championship game. Leggett, then the top assistant for the Tigers, was in charge for that 1993 championship game, an 11-7 win over N.C. State. Clemson s eight tournament titles came in 1976, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1989, 1991, 1993, and 1994. Wilhelm is credited with the first seven tournament championships. 2
Notes Clemson has been a consistent team in tournament play. The Tigers have won at least two tournament games in 27 of their previous 29 appearances. The only years Clemson did not win at least two games were 1998 (0-2) and 2001 (1-2). While Clemson has not won the title since 1994, Clemson has been to the championship round five of the last seven years. Only 10 times in the 29-year history has a #1 seed won the tournament. Clemson has done it five times, while Georgia Tech, and North Carolina have done it twice each. Clemson last won the tournament as the #1 seed in 1994, the last time Clemson won the tournament. The Tigers have won the ACC Tournament with a perfect record five times. Clemson was 3-0 in 1976 and 1978 in winning both events at Clemson, then had a 4-0 record in winning the title in Raleigh in 1980. Clemson s only other perfect run through the tournament came in 1991, when a Clemson team that won a record 60 games had a 5-0 mark in the ACC Tournament held in Greenville, SC. This will be the first time the tournament has been held in the state of Virginia. Clemson has a winning record against every other ACC team in tournament play with the exception of Florida State. Clemson is 7-10 against the Seminoles in the event. The Tigers are 8-2 against Duke, 11-7 versus Georgia Tech, 12-0 versus Maryland, 14-9 against North Carolina, 14-9 against N.C. State, 10-4 versus Virginia and 11-4 versus Wake Forest. That computes to an 87-45 record and a.659 winning percentage. Only Florida State has a better winning percentage than Clemson in ACC Tournament play. Clemson was the dominant team when the ACC Tournament was played in Greenville from 1987-95. In those nine tournaments, Clemson posted a 36-12 record, won the event four times, and finished second on two other occasions. Clemson won at least three games in eight of the nine tournaments held in Greenville. The success was reflected in the attendance. Each of the top eight ACC tournament crowds in history were held in Greenville, including the record 43,675 that attended the 1992 event. The ACC Tournament began in 1973 and has been held every year but one since then. In 1979, Clemson won the regular-season title and was declared conference champion. The tournament was not held because of a scheduling conflict between school exam schedules and the tournament. Clemson has been the declared conference champion 13 times in its history, more than any other school. Although the NCAA does not release its official RPI, Boyd Nation has come up with an RPI index that is all but the same as the official RPI. He uses numbers from previous seasons to verify his formulas. In the May 19 release, his RPI index has Clemson #9. Clemson can thank a brutal nonconference schedule for its high RPI ranking. The RPI only counts games against Division I teams and is for games through May 18. The Atlantic Coast Conference is rated as the best conference in the unofficial RPI, just ahead of the SEC. The ACC, which was the #1 conference a season ago, sports six of the top 22 teams in the RPI, including #1 Florida State, #3 Georgia Tech, #9 Clemson, #12 N.C. State, #17 North Carolina, and #22 Virginia. Clemson is also 18-11 against the top-50 teams in the RPI and has played the topthree teams in the RPI, totaling a 5-4 record. Clemson, who is 38-18 this year, has won at least 40 games for 17 straight years and has participated in the NCAA Tournament for 16 consecutive years. Only Miami (FL) (30) and Florida State (25) hold longer current NCAA Tourney streaks. Tigers Won 14 Games in a Row After starting the season 3-3, Clemson won 14 games in a row before falling at Western Carolina on March 25. The streak tied for the seventh longest in school history. In 2002, Clemson started the season 13-0, lost, then won 13 more games in a row. The 14-game win streak was its longest streak since 1996, when the Tigers won 15 games in a row. Winning Close Games...Again Clemson has had success this year in close ballgames. The team has played in 18 games decided by two runs or less, and has won 14 of them. Clemson is 6-2 in one-run games and 8-2 in tworun games this year. Last season, Clemson was 6-1 in one-run games and 13-4 in two-run games for a total of 19-5 in games decided by two runs or less. Therefore, in the last two seasons, Clemson is 33-9 in games decided by two runs or less. Rallying to Victory a Common Theme Clemson has 19 come-from-behind wins in 2003 among its 38 overall victories. The Tigers have been especially good at late rallies. Clemson has rallied to win twice when down in the eighth inning, three times when down in the ninth, and twice when down in the 10th inning, meaning Clemson has rallied to win entering its last at bat. More Hits Than Opponent = Victory Of course the only column on the scoreboard that counts in determining a game s winner is the run column. But this season, the hit column has been just important for the Tigers. When Clemson has had more hits than its opponents, it is 32-1 this season. When it has not, the Tigers are 6-17. The only loss in that situation game the first time it happened this year (at #16 Auburn in the third game of the season). Therefore, the Tigers have won 32- straight games when out-hitting the opponent. Bunting Success Head Coach Jack Leggett knew that the success of Clemson this season would depend on moving runners along after losing Jeff Baker and Khalil Greene. And that has certainly been the case, as successful bunting has been a bright spot. Along with many successful squeeze bunts, Tiger batters have 20 bunt base hits in just 38 at bats, meaning over half of the bunt attempts (of the non-sacrifice variety) have gone for hits. Batters also have 24 sacrifice bunts, led by Kyle Frank s six. Tigers Sport Consistent Lineup Clemson has a solid team batting average of.311, but no player is hitting above.355. The six Tigers with at least 158 at bats are all hitting between.316 and.355, which means many different players have come through in the clutch. But Clemson s four lefthanded batters (Herman Demmink, Kyle Frank, Zane Green, and Michael Johnson) have combined to hit.322 against lefties. Tigers Tough to Beat at Home Under Leggett In 10 seasons, Head Coach Jack Leggett has a 472-190 record at Clemson, including a 186-92 mark against ACC teams. He has been especially tough in home ACC series, where he has a 94-24 (.797) record. The ACC team with the most success at Clemson has been Florida State, who has only won five games in 15 tries at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Even when an opposing ACC team is victorious at Clemson, it usually means that team only won one of three games. In 40 ACC home series under Leggett, Clemson has lost only two series, losing two of three to N.C. State in 1996 and getting swept by Florida State in 2002. Georgia Tech also split a pair of games in a rain-shortened season in 1997. Five Tigers Hit.371 or Better in ACC Play Clemson s five predominant infielders, Herman Demmink (has been the designated hitter of late), David Slevin (2B), Russell Triplett (SS), Michael Johnson (1B), and Brad McCann (3B) all hit at least.371 in ACC regular-season play this season. Demmink hit.457, Johnson hit.400, Slevin hit.392, McCann hit.376, and Triplett hit.371. Demmink, a freshman, also had a.537 on-base percentage in ACC play, while Johnson had a.539 mark. As a team, Clemson out-hit its ACC opponents.326 to.285, a margin of 41 points. Tigers Led ACC in Batting Average in ACC Play Clemson s.326 batting average in ACC regular-season games was tops in the conference in 2003 and is 27 points higher than the team s batting average against non-acc games. The ACC is regarded as one of the top conferences in the nation. He hit the walkoff single against Winthrop in the Tigers 5-4 win March 4 and had a 10-game hitting streak earlier in the season. But his biggest performance came at College of Charleston on March 18. He hit his first career homer in his 275th career at bat in the second inning. Then in the ninth inning, with runners on second and third and two outs, he lined an 0-2 changeup for a single to give the Tigers the lead. Clemson went on to win 7-6 and win its 10th-straight game. Slevin Riding 18-Game Hitting Streak Senior second baseman David Slevin has been the hottest hitter over the last month and is riding a 18-game hitting streak, the longest by a Tiger this season. The Port Saint Lucie, FL native is also 39- for-105 (.371) in the last 25 games to raise his season average to.327. Slevin, who has batted near the bottom of the lineup all season, also hit well in ACC games (.392). Slevin came up big twice in one series to lift the Tigers to victory. Against North Carolina on May 11, he tied the score in the 10th inning with a double. He later scored the winning run in the Tigers thrilling 5-4 victory. The next day, with the Tigers trailing 2-1 and the bases loaded in the eighth inning, he doubled to right center, giving the Tigers the lead for good. Both clutch hits extended his hitting streak. Slevin Hit.392 Against the ACC David Slevin not only hit.392 in the ACC regular season in 2003, he had 22 of his 26 RBIs in 23 ACC starts, meaning he has only four in 27 nonconference games. Slevin, who did not hit a homer last season, hit three during the ACC schedule and only committed two errors for an outstanding.987 fielding percentage. Since then, he has hit safely in all five games he has played and is 10-for-17 (.588) with seven RBIs. Against Wake Forest, Head Coach Jack Leggett inserted Evans into the leadoff spot in the batting order. In the two games he played against the Demon Deacons, he was 6-for-8 with four runs scored, four doubles, a triple, two RBIs, three walks, a stolen base, and a.818 on-base percentage. He also earned ACC Player-of-the-Week honors for his efforts. Thanks to his recent success, Evans has raised his batting average to.321. Green Continuing Hot Hitting From 2002 Zane Green s power numbers have not continued from last season s NCAA Tournament, when he hit six homers in 10 games. But his batting average of.316 has valuable as the leadoff hitter. He has played in 149 career games, and ironically all six of his career homers came in the 10-game NCAA Tournament in 2002. Frank Providing Senior Leadership Fifth-year graduate centerfielder Kyle Frank has increased his batting average to.326. He also has 46 RBIs, eight homers, and nine doubles. It was a special day for the fifth-year graduate, as his parents, who reside in Wolfeboro, NH, were on hand to see Frank s finest game as a Tiger. Frank entered the game with just eight career homers in 719 career at bats. Frank added a walk and stolen base to his credit in the game and reached base in nine-straight plate appearances. He also was 7- for-his-last-7, as he was 3-for-4 in the previous game. Frank the Graduate Kyle Frank, a fifth-year senior, received is undergraduate degree Friday, May 9 at Littlejohn Coliseum. He received his degree in computer information systems. The night before, he hit his first career grand slam at Furman in front of many family members, who made the trip down from New Hampshire. McCann Continues to Shine in First Season First-year sophomore third-baseman Brad McCann (Duluth, GA) suffered through a 1-for-22 slump prior to the Old Dominion series from March 7-9. But he quickly turned things around against the Monarchs, and in his last 47 games, he is 78- for-202 (.386) with nine homers, 18 doubles, and 60 RBIs. He has also hit seven of his nine homers 6

And in his last 19 games, he is 21-for- 61 (.344). That span started in a three-game series at Florida State in mid-april. Prior to that, he had only started four of the Tigers first 31 games. Since, he has started 17 of the last 25 games. Against Wake Forest from May 15-17, he was 6-for-12. He also hit his first career home run in Clemson s 4-3 win in the regular-season finale. It came on his 372nd career at bat. Hogan a Hero of Late Junior righthander Patrick Hogan has made 11 relief appearances and five starts for 55.1 innings pitched this year. He has had a hand in three of Clemson s five team shutouts. He has allowed hitters to hit just.244 and has struck out 47. The Columbia, SC native has brought a competitive spirit and quiet fierceness to the mound in 2003, as he has become a go-to pitcher out of the bullpen. He also has three saves. His brother, Doug, is a senior catcher at Irmo High and has already signed a letter of intent to join the Tiger program for the 2004 season. In his first start of 2003 and just his third career start, he shut down #20 South Carolina in a 4-2 win. The Columbia, SC native allowed just one run on four hits in a career-high 7.2 innings pitched. Then on April 26, he got the win against #4 Georgia Tech by setting career highs for innings pitched (8.0) and strikeouts (8). He then broke his career high for strikeouts when he fanned 10 against Duke on May 5. He also picked up the win by pitching 6.0 scoreless innings in relief at Wake Forest in the Tigers 6-2 win on May 15. But this year, he has stepped up his game and struck out 28 while walking only three. He also has a team-high six saves. Against East Tennessee State on April 23, he tied his career-long outing as he pitched the last 6.0 innings to earn the win. It was also his longest relief appearance ever. In that game, he allowed one hit, no runs, and no walks while striking out a careerhigh eight in Clemson s 6-3 win in 12 innings. His career-high strikeout total entering the game was four. The next game (against #4 Georgia Tech), he came into the game in a similar situation and got the win against the Yellow Jackets. In three games during the week of Apr. 21-27, he was 2-0 in three relief appearances. He also allowed just one run on three hits, no walks, and struck out 12 to earn ACC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors. Against Duke on May 4, he entered the game with the score tied and the bases loaded in the eighth inning and struck out the batter. Clemson went on to win 7-6. State, one at #2 Florida State, one against #4 Georgia Tech, and one at Wake Forest, he has allowed just 31 earned runs and 29 walks while striking out 69. He also has allowed just 16 extra base hits. He pitched his first complete game of his career against Old Dominion on March 7, a three-hit shutout. He did not allow a baserunner to reach third base in the entire game, extending that personal streak to 16.1 innings over two starts. That streak ended at 17.0 the next outing. Lumsden has already earned ACC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors twice this season. Lumsden also earned the win at #2 Florida State in April and the win at Wake Forest in May. Baseball America ranks Lumsden as the #19 sophomore prospect in the nation, an accolade welldeserved considering his 90+ mph fastball and sharp-breaking curveball. Lumsden also has other unique abilities on and off the diamond. He can throw a baseball right-handed 80 mph. He was also a standout basketball player at Cave Springs High School in Roanoke, VA, where he averaged over 20 points per game as a senior. However, he was not the leading scorer on that team, as Duke star freshman J.J. Redick led the team in scoring with over 28 points per game. Lumsden Invited to USA National Team Tryouts Tyler Lumsden was one of the first eight players invited to try out for the USA National Team on March 26, 2003. Lumsden joins righthander Philip Humber (Rice), infielder Paul Janish (Rice), catcher Mike Nickeas (Georgia Tech), righthander Jeff Niemann (Rice), righthander Huston Street (Texas), righthander Justin Verlander (Old Dominion), and righthander Jered Weaver (Long Beach State) as invitees. All eight invitees are sophomores this season. The USA National Team will play in the Pan Am Games in the Dominican Republic in August. The official team roster will be determined and announced on June 27. The team will open play July 2 at Durham (NC) Bulls Athletic Park against Japan. Team USA will also play an additional seven games in Durham among other contests. Jackson Showing Good Action at Home Junior righthander Steven Jackson has all the makings of being a high draft pick. And this year, he is living up to his potential, especially at home. The hurler who has been clocked in the mid-90s this season has a 7-2 record overall, but a 6-0 record and 1.90 ERA at home in eight starts. He is also holding opponents to a.209 batting average at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. He has picked up wins in six of his last eight starts and is 7-1 since is his first start of the year at #16 Auburn. Jackson has a 15-4 career record in three seasons. Hahn Fire in the Bullpen Jeff Hahn, a sophomore righthander from Winchester, VA, started the season at Auburn as the Friday starter. But he did not fare well in that role, therefore he was moved into the bullpen in early April. And since the move, he has been outstanding out of the pen, with a 1.80 ERA in 11 relief appearances. Notes ACC. He has started eight games and relieved in nine others, as he has a 4-2 record in 57.0 innings pitched. He also has allowed just one homer and has a.256 opponents batting average. Head Coach Jack Leggett calls Berken a battler on the mound. Berken was first-team all-state at West De Pere High in both baseball and football, and was thirdteam all-state in basketball as a senior. On the gridiron, he threw for over 3,000 yards as a senior and had several scholarship offers. On the hardwood, he averaged over 20 points per game as well. Johnson At His Best Against South Carolina In 16 career games against rival South Carolina, Michael Johnson hit 10 homers. He has hit 57 career homers in 230 career games, meaning he has hit a homer every 4.04 games. But against the Gamecocks, he hit one every 1.60 games. He has hit 17.5 percent of his homers against South Carolina, while playing only 7.0 percent of his games against the Gamecocks. Thanks to his three homers and seven RBIs in four games against South Carolina this year, he received the Bob Bradley Award for being Clemson s most outstanding player in the series. It was the second-straight year he received that honor. McCann & Johnson Opposites in Many Ways Brad McCann and Michael Johnson have both put a positive stamp on the Tiger lineup this season, but they have done so in differing ways. They bat #3 and #4 in the batting order and both of their fathers being baseball coaches. They also like to hit homers away from home, as they have combined to hit 14 of their 20 homers away from home this season. Here is a list of their differences: McCann plays at third base, while Johnson plays on the opposite side of the field at first base. McCann bats right, Johnson left. McCann is a first-year sophomore, Johnson is a fifth-year senior. McCann has walked just 11 times, Johnson has walked 61 times. McCann is a doubles machine (20), Johnson is a homer machine (57 career). McCann is outgoing and extroverted, while Johnson is quiet and unassuming. McCann is from a suburb of Atlanta, Johnson is from a small town on the coast of South Carolina. McCann Making Teams Pay for Walking M.J. Brad McCann leads Clemson with 64 RBIs, and many of those have come right after opposing pitchers have walked Michael Johnson. Johnson has walked 61 times this year, three shy of the Tiger single-season record. McCann is hitting 21-for-52 (.404) with five doubles, a homer, and 21 RBIs when he follows a walk to Johnson in the lineup. Johnson, McCann Hit Walkoff Homers Michael Johnson hit a three-run, walkoff homer to beat East Tennessee State 6-3 in 12 innings on April 23. The homer moved Johnson into second place in Tiger history. In the next game, against #4 Georgia Tech, lightning struck twice. With Clemson trailing 7-6 in the 10th inning, Brad McCann hit a two-out, opposite-field, three-run homer to give Clemson a 9-7 win. And three games later, Steve Pyzik hit a walkoff single to beat Duke on May 4. It was 22nd walkoff hit in Jack Leggett s 10 years as Clemson s head coach. Edmonds Connection Clemson has had recent success recruiting student-athletes from the far west reaches of the United States, particularly the Seattle, WA area. In 2000, Head Coach Jack Leggett hired Hank King as the volunteer assistant. King had been the head coach at Edmonds Community College in Edmonds, WA in previous seasons. He brought with him two players (Ryan Riley and Nick Glaser), both that instantly made an impact. Glaser set the school singleseason record for saves (15), Riley was a two-year starting second baseman, and both played on Clemson s 2000 College World Series team. In 2001, closer Josh Cram and outfielder Chad Coder joined the Tiger squad from Edmonds CC. And in 2003, catcher Brady Everett and reliever Aaron Trolia have joined the team.
