Waccamaw Athletics: Emergency Action Plan (EAP) Team Physician: Waccamaw Orthopedics Dr. William Greer Office Phone: 843-652-8160 Physician Assistant: Shantae Seiffert Certified Athletic Trainer: 843-458-5710 Christine Keillor 847-363-2267 (ICE) Athletic Director: Joan Cribb 843-833-0261 Administrator on Duty: David Hammel 843-458-7856 Tyronne Davis 843-458-8233 Tracy McCants SRO: Dave Reagan 843-458-7272 Head Coach Assistant Coach Introduction The purpose of the Waccamaw Athletics EAP is to guide the Athletic Health Care Team (AHCT) in responding to emergency situations when they occur. The AHCT includes the team physician, athletic trainer, coaches, administrators, police officers and EMS. An emergency includes loss of consciousness, loss of breathing, a bone protruding through the skin, obvious dislocations/deformities, heat illness/heat stroke, bleeding that cannot be stopped and a possible head/neck/back injury. When an emergency occurs the Chain of Command grid will be used. All pertinent care decisions will be made by the team physician when available. If team physician is not available, then the certified athletic trainer on duty will make the call. When the athletic trainer is not
available the highest person in the chain of command who is present at a scene will be the designated leader or person in charge. This person will be responsible for deciding whether or not to call 911, instructing others how they may be of help and will be the person to stay with the athlete until EMS arrives. Once it has been decided that EMS should be called, the following protocol will be enforced. 1. The highest person on the chain of command grid will be deemed the leader and will monitor the athlete s condition and administer necessary first aid. If possible, someone else on the chain of command should stay with the leader for support and assistance. The RSO and administrator on duty should be notified that there is an emergency on campus. 2. The highest person on the chain of command will delegate someone to call 911 if the resource officer is not present (the resource officer can activate EMS quickest). They may call from any cell phone (all administrators, team physicians, athletic trainers and coaches have cell phones), a phone in the athletic training room, a phone in Mike Quinn s room or the front office. To dial out from the building press a LINE and dial 9-911. EMS should be told what the emergency is, the condition of the athlete and how to get to where the athlete is (SEE MAPS AND CAMPUS AREAS FOR SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS). Tell EMS that someone will be meeting them at the nearest entrance and delegate a person to do that. Do not hang up the phone unless the 911 operator has hung up first. 3. The leader will then send a runner to the nearest intersection or entrance to meet EMS and direct them to the location of the injured athlete. 4. The leader will designate someone to attempt to get in contact with the athletes parents/guardians. Emergency contact information is held in Joan Cribb s athletic director office. Each coach is responsible for having their own emergency contact info as well. If the parent/guardian is not available, this emergency contact form/student info sheet needs to accompany the athlete to the ER. 5. If EMS deems transportation is necessary the athlete will go to Waccamaw Hospital unless the parent requests otherwise. Location of AED s AED s are located in the front office of Waccamaw High School and in the gymnasium. The athletic trainer has a portable AED and there is an AED at the baseball fields.
