Southern Arkansas University 2011 Mulerider Football THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2011 HTTP://WWW.MULERIDERATHLETICS.COM Arkansas Tech University Wonder Boys (1-5, 0-1 GAC) @ Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (1-5, 1-2 GAC) WHEN: OCTOBER 15, 2011 WHERE: MAGNOLIA, ARK. @ WILKINS STADIUM KICKOFF: 2:30 P.M. The Series (43-27-4, Arkansas Tech) Saturday s game will be the 75th meeting between Southern Arkansas and Arkansas Tech, with the Wonder Boys holding a 43-27-4 advantage in the series. The teams began play in 1916 with a 6-0 ATU win in Russellville. After not facing each other the next three seasons, they played from 1920-22, with Tech winning all three, including a 118-0 walloping of the Muleriders in 1922, the most lopsided loss in SAU s history. The teams resumed play from 1930-36, with Southern Arkansas getting its first win by a 7-0 margin in 1932 in Russellville. That would be the only Mulerider win in the first 16 meetings. The teams played to scoreless ties in 1930, 1931, and 1934. The Wonder Boys got wins in 1933, 1935, and 1936. The series picked back up in 1946 and ATU won through 1950, the year both schools became four-year institutions, and giving Tech its longest win streak, at seven, in the series. SAU stopped the skid with a 27-0 shutout in 1951, and won again the following year en route to back-to-back Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC) titles. Southern Arkansas longest win streak of the series is five games from 1972-1976. The last tie, 14-14, was played in 1987. In 1996, the Muleriders started a three-game win streak in the series, before the Wonder Boys eked out a 20-17 overtime decision in 1999 that kept Southern Arkansas from winning the conference championship, claimed by ATU. Arkansas Tech won in 2000, and the Muleriders came from behind to celebrate Homecoming with a 28-25 victory in 2001. The teams did not play in 2002 and 2003 because of schedule rotation. The Wonder Boys won the next three, 35-21 in 2004 at Russellville, and 38-35 and 36-29 in 2005 and 2006, respectively, both in Magnolia. SAU snapped that three-game streak the next year in Russellville with a wild, offensive shootout in a 56-49 game, and made it two consecutive with a 45-42 victory in 2008 in Magnolia. ATU has won each of the past two seasons, 37-24 and 35-19, both on its home field. ATU holds an 18-16-3 advantage in games played in Magnolia and a 25-11-1 edge in Russellville. The Coaches Hired as the 19th head coach at Southern Arkansas in December 2008, Bill Keopple (Central Arkansas, 1982) is in his third season with the Muleriders, where he is now 5-21 overall. He previously had spent six years as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, compiling a 44-26-1 record, five consecutive state playoff appearances, two 6A South Conference titles, and 6A state championships in 2006 and 2007. In 1996 he served as athletic director and head coach at Newport High School, guiding the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years at the high school level. Keopple has 18 years of experience as an assistant in the collegiate ranks. He spent the 2002 season on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burn s staff at Tulsa, coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator. He served two years under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. Keopple was an honorable mention All-District and All-AIC selection for Central Arkansas and got his start there as a graduate assistant in 1982. He spent 14 years with the Bears coaching the offensive line and was offensive coordinator from 1990-95. Arkansas Tech s Steve Mullins (Arkansas-Monticello, 1980) is currently 90-66 in his 15th year as head coach of the Wonder Boys. He led ATU to the GSC Championship and the school s first appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1999, to the school s first-ever win in the playoffs in 2004 in advancing to the second round, and another second round appearance in 2009. Mullins came to Tech as head coach in 1997, after seven years (1990-96) as an assistant at Northwestern State (La.) University. Prior to his stay at Northwestern, he served as an assistant at Southwestern Oklahoma for two years (1986-87), and Lamar University for four years (1982-85). Mullins began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Central Arkansas in 1981. A native of Camden, he went on to play college football at Arkansas-Monticello, where he was a three-time All-AIC choice and two-time All-American as a defensive tackle. VS. Media Coverage Radio: The Mulerider Sports Network featuring flagship station KVMZ 99.1-FM in Magnolia, with Dan Gregory in his 30th year as the voice of the Muleriders and Dylan McLemore providing color, and affiliates KAGL 93.3-FM (El Dorado), KLEZ 93.5-FM (Hot Springs), KLIX 104.1-FM (Hatfield/Mena), KMTB 99.5-FM (Nashville) and KTFS 940-AM (Texarkana); KWKK 100.9-FM in Russellville, with Sam Strasner handling play-by-play, and Kelly Davis providing color. Mulerider Football History Southern Arkansas has had a football program for 101 years (1911), but will have to wait until the 2017 season to truly commemorate 100 years of Mulerider football. SAU didn t field a team from 1937-1939 and 1942-1945, a total of seven years, making 2011 the 94th football season at Southern Arkansas. SAU was founded in 1909 as the Third District Agricultural School, with G.R. Turrentine serving as the inaugural head coach in 1911. The team played only two games that first year, losing both in Magnolia by shutouts, 19-0 to Texarkana (Texas) High School and 9-0 to Camden High School. The team was commonly called the Magnolia Aggies until the early 1920 s, but Turrentine, who went on to coach for a total of seven years, is credited with providing the moniker of Muleriders following the team s final game of the 1912 season, a Thanksgiving date at Fordyce High School. A few days after that game, members of the team rode mules to Coach Turrentine s home to discuss their final game and he greeted them with My Mule Riders. That was the first known time the term was used, and the name eventually stuck, changing from two words to the compound Muleriders. SAU is now 427-411-30 in 94 years of football since its first season of play in 1911, and did not field teams from 1937-1939 and 1942-1945. They are currently 1-2 in Great American Conference games in its inaugural season. All-time, they are 192-194-11 against teams currently in the GAC. Bill Keopple enters his third season as head football coach at Southern Arkansas, hired in December 2008 as the 19th coach to lead the Muleriders. Keopple has accumulated 27 years of coaching experience, including his first stint as a head coach on the collegiate level at SAU. He served 18 years as an assistant in the college ranks with stops at Tulsa, Arkansas, Boise State and Central Arkansas. Prior to coming to Southern Arkansas, Keopple served six years (2003-2008) as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana. His teams were 44-26-1 during his six seasons, advancing to the state playoffs the last five and winning consecutive state championships in 2006 and 2007. Keopple s 2005 and 2006 Razorback teams were 6A South Conference champions. He was honored in 2006 as the 6A State Farm Coach of the Year, as well as 6A Outstanding Coach by the National Football Foundation in both 2006 and 2007, and was selected to serve on the Arkansas high school football All- Star coaching staffs in 2004 and 2007. Before taking over the reins at Texarkana, Keopple was at the University of Tulsa in 2002 on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burns staff. He spent that season coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator for the Golden Hurricane. Keopple served as an assistant under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. The Razorbacks were 1998 SEC Western Division champions, finishing 9-3 and playing Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. Arkansas had the fifth-ranked rushing defense in the nation that season and was ranked seventh in total defense. The 1999 Razorbacks went 8-4 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, finishing the season 12th in rushing defense and 17th in total defense. Keopple went to Boise State from Newport High School where he was head coach and athletic director in 1996. He guided the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years as a head coach on the high school level. HEAD COACH...Personal Info. Both squads enter Saturday s contest at 1-5, with each team s lone win coming on the same date, September 10, in their second game of the season, on the road, and by nearly identical scores. The Muleriders picked up a 31-22 GAC win at Southwestern Oklahoma State, while the Wonder Boys pulled out a 31-20 victory at Southwest Baptist (Mo.). The biggest difference record-wise is that SAU is 1-2 in three conference games, while ATU has played only one thus far, losing at Arkansas-Monticello. * Besides celebrating Homecoming Saturday, Southern Arkansas will also honor its 2011 Sports Hall of Fame class at halftime. Eight new members will be inducted as the ninth class at a banquet Friday night. The class of 2011 includes three former athletes from the golden era, four from the modern era, and one meritorious service honoree. Those to be inducted from the golden era include football All-American Ed Choate (1971-1974), all-conference basketball standout Frank Dolan (1956-1960), and track and field All- American George Eriquezzo (1965-1966, 1968). Honorees from the modern era are baseball All-American Arturo Cherena (1987-1988), football All-American Eddie Key (1998-2001), men s tennis All-American Paolo Pezzoli (1986-1989), and volleyball All-American Kristin (Smith) Smitty Olson (1992-1994), who also competed in track and field. Long-time faculty athletic representative and faculty member Louis Blanchard is being honored for meritorious service.
