We have many opportunities for 4-Hers this summer to learn and attend camps. FYI! The camp booklets had some typos so please see the Camp Registration Form enclosed for the correct dates. Also, if you intend to bring an animal/livestock to the Fair you need to fill out and turn in what is called a Livestock Identification Form which are due to the Extension Office or Online by MAY 15. See enclosed for information on the 4-H Awards & Recognition which will be moving to Thursday night of the Fair before the Dodgeball Tournament. I hope 4-H members, 4-H leaders, parents, supporters and adult volunteers find your Ticket to Success in 4-H as youth or adults, whether it be in your project areas, 4-H club, Lyon County events, Fair or beyond! The following species need to have an ear tag if the animal does not have a Tattoo Id (breeding & dairy animals only). Beef: Breeding Heifers, Feeder Calf, Cow/Calf Pairs, Bucket Calf, Market Beef (done at weigh ins) Goats: Market, Breeding, Dairy Sheep: Market, Breeding Market Beef, Beef Pen of Three & Sheep Pen of Three are tagged at Weigh Ins. ALL SWINE are tagged at weigh in or by a Swine committee member. Swine tags cannot be purchased in advance. ~The Extension Office has taggers and a tattoo set that can be checked out. GRADUATING 4-H MEMBERS I would like to congratulate the 2014 Senior 4-H members. You have made an impact by showing your leadership to the younger 4-H members in your club as well as Lyon County. Jill P Anna Van Veldhuizen, Austin Hayenga, Brooke Matson, Jessica Harberts, Kelsey Knoblock, Matthew Metzger, Reagen Meyer, Shelby Dill and Shelby Fastert MULTI-COUNTY LIVESTOCK WORKSHOP The annual Multi-County Livestock Workshop will be held at the Sioux County Fairgrounds in Sioux Center this year on May 29 from 6:00-9:00pm. This is a great hands on opportunity to learn about your project areas! Details and Registration will be in the April newsletter. There will also be a last chance FSQA Training from 4-6pm before the workshop! HORSE WORKSHOPS Dates: July 1 - Showmanship & Halter July 10 - Western Pleasure & Stock Seat Equitation July 14 - Trail & Games Time: 7:00 p.m. Place: Lyon County Fairgrounds Participants may only bring horses that have been identified on the ID sheet. Participants MUST wear boots or hard soled shoes - - - no tennis shoes allowed. Participants must wear an approved helmet during riding events. LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS: FSQA Food Safety and Quality Assurance ****4-H/FFA members showing livestock at the Fair are required to either train or test. If you are unsure if you need the training or testing please contact Jill at the Extension Office. ~Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) Training or Testing is required to show livestock at the fair. If you intend to show at the fair, you need to have the training or take the test for your age group. The livestock species includes beef, swine, sheep, dairy cattle, goat (meat, breeding, & dairy), rabbits, poultry, and bottle/bucket calf. The species excluded from the FSQA training/testing are horses and pets. What is the certification/recertification process? All youth in grades 4 th, 5 th & 6 th are required to attend a training (no testing) each year. Youth in grades 7 th, 8 th, 9 th will have the option of attending a training every year or completing an Intermediate Test which will certify them until they 10 th grade. Youth in grades 10 th, 11 th & 12 th will have the option of attending a training every year or completing a Senior Test which will certify them until they graduate. Where are the manuals to study for the tests? The manual is available online at www.extension@iastate.edu/4h/livestock/fsqa, the manual is also available at the Extension Office. If you were unable to attend the training on the Lyon County date you will need to attend FSQA Training at a different county. See Below for the different county training dates, location & time. 4-H AWARDS & RECOGNITION & FAIR FUN NIGHT A fun night is being planned for July 24 in the evening complete all the fair activities (See schedule below). The Public is invited to attend all activities! You don't have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! You will get to experience campus life, and meet new people from across the state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! If you have a specific interest in animal science, you might want to look into becoming part of the ROUND-UP track! We'll also have a special track devoted to agronomy, called CSI: Crops. And, new in 2013, a track for wilderness education and Shooting Sports. Please join us in June for the most incredible three days of your life at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference! 4-H IS FUN!
