After opening the month of December with five games over 12 days, it is the Broncos first action since defeating Youngstown State on Dec. 12, eight days ago. CLOSER LOOK AT WMU Western Michigan is averaging 58.3 ppg this season and is led by the senior trio of Taylor Manley, Ebony Cleary and Brenna Banktson, all who average double figures. Manley is producing 14.4 ppg, Cleary 13.1 ppg and Banktson 10.1 ppg. Cleary (7.7 rpg) and Banktson (6.5 rpg) are also the team s top two rebounders. WMU is shooting 35.8 percent from the field and 31.5 percent from behind the arc. SCOUTING WASHINGTON The Huskies are 4-3 this season and 1-1. Washington is coming off a 59-54 loss to UC Riverside and fell earlier in the year to MAC counterpart Kent State, 59-58. UW is averaging 56.9 ppg, led by the one-two punch of Regina Rogers (18.0 ppg) and Kristi Kingma (17.7). The Huskies are shooting 36.2 percent from the floor and allowing opponents 55.0 ppg. AND WE MEET AGAIN This is the second ever meeting between Western Michigan and Washington, the Huskies won the first round last year in Kalamazoo, 71-63. Ebony Cleary scored 14 points, Miame Giden had 12 and Taylor Manley had 11 in the loss. Both teams committed 22 turnovers, but UW was able to shoot 48.3 percent for the game, while WMU connected at 33.3 percent. The Broncos are 2-5 all-time against PAC- 10 schools. Washington is 7-2 all-time against MAC schools. WHAT A COMEBACK Western Michigan overcame a 24-point second-half deficit to defeat Youngstown State in overtime, 69-64, Dec. 12 in Kalamazoo. Five players reached double figures for the Broncos, who shot 31-for-32 from the free-throw line. After playing its worst half of basketball this season (scoring just 13 points), Western Michigan responded in a big way, scoring its most points in a half (45) in the final 20 minutes of regulation. Taylor Manley led WMU with 16 points and Maria Iaquaniello recorded a career-high 13 points, also grabbing eight rebounds. Sophomore DeAirra Goss tallied her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. DOUBLIN DOWN A WMU player has recorded a double-double recorded in five of WMU s first 11 games. Senior Brenna Banktson tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds against EIU for her second career double-double. Classmate Ebony Cleary has posted three double-doubles this season, against Loyola-Chicago (20p/18r), Morehead State (11p/12r) and Cleveland State (20p/10r). Sophomore DeAirra Goss had her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds against Youngstown State. LESS THAN 100 TO REACH 1,000 Seniors Brenna Banktson and Ebony Cleary continue to make their way towards 1,000 career points. Banktson (926) needs 74 points and Cleary (902) is 98 points away. Western Michigan has had a total of 21 players reach 1,000 points in school history. ANDERSON LEADING THE BLOCK PARTY Western Michigan has recorded 38 blocks this season, and has an unexpected leader in the category, as the shortest player on the team leads WMU. Standing at 5-4, sophomore guard Aurielle Anderson s quickness has allowed her to come up with nine swats. Maria Iaquaniello is second on the team with eight. DIALED IN Senior Taylor Manley has made a three-pointer in nine of WMU s 11 contests, and has hit multiple triples in all but one. Manley has a team-best 30 three s this season, already eclipsing last year s total of 29. Manley has dialed in for five three s in three different games. PROBABLE BRONCO STARTERS Pos. No. Name Ht. Starting the last six games, Iaquaniello (nicknamed Ike) has been a solid contributor, averaging 6.8 ppg and 4.5 rpg. She has twice scored in double figures and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds at Southeast Missouri State Dec. 7. Iaquaniello is also known for her defense, often defending one of the opposition s top guards/forwards. 2010-11 EDITION Western Michigan returns nine letterwinners and four of its five starters from a year ago. Leading the way are seniors Brenna Banktson, Ebony Cleary, Kemmy Dominique and Taylor Manley. The junior group consists of twins Miame and Robin Giden, redshirt junior Maria Iaquaniello, as well as walk-on Astynn George. Back in their second season are sophomores Aurielle Anderson and DeAirra Goss. Joining the group is freshmen trio Rachel Adaline, Corie Buchanan and Andrea Kras. The Broncos are coached by third-year head coach Tasha McDowell. WMU finished last year with a record of 9-21 overall, 4-12 in the Mid-American Conference. A DIFFERENT LOOK Freshmen centers Andrea Kras and Rachel Adaline give WMU a different look than in years past, adding considerable height to the roster. Standing at 6-7, Kras is one of the tallest players in the nation and is the tallest player ever in the history of the Bronco program. Adaline brings a one-two punch down low, standing at a true 6-3. BRONCOS START SEASON WITH A WIN Seniors Brenna Banktson, Ebony Cleary and Taylor Manley all scored in double-figures leading WMU to a 57-55 win over Eastern Illinois on Nov. 12. The Broncos led by 11 at the half and held on after a late run by the Panthers. WMU shot 38.2 percent for the game and held EIU to a 33.3 clip. Banktson finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds for her second career double-double and first since her freshman season. Cleary checked out with a game-high 16 points (five rebounds), while Manley chipped in 12 points and four assists. TOP RETURNERS Miame Giden has been the Broncos top scorer the past two seasons, and averaging 14.4 points last year. She also led WMU in free throws made (96-for-130) and finished second on the team in rebounding, field-goal percentage (.381), assists (41) and minutes played (972). Ebony Cleary led the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg) and field-goal percentage (.503). She finished second in scoring (10.4 ppg) and free-throws made (60-for-86). DeAirra Goss (4.7 ppg, 2.7 rpg) is the Broncos top defender, and led WMU with 53 steals, ranking sixth in the MAC in steals per game. Aurielle Anderson is the team s returning point guard. WELCOME ABOARD Joining the team as a walk-on this season is junior guard Astynn George from nearby Sturgis, Mich. She becomes the Broncos first walk-on since the 2004-05 season. A Class B second-team all-state selection as a senior in high school, George averaged 18.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 5.8 apg, 2.7 spg during her prep career. She ranked fifth in the state for three-point percentage (38.9%) as a senior. Giden named preseason all-mac Western Michigan junior Miame Giden was one of five selected from the West Division as Preseason All-Mid-American Conference. She was named to the All-MAC Freshman Team in her first season and was an Honorable Mention All-MAC selection a year ago. The Broadview, Ill., native is the first Bronco to be named Preseason All-MAC since Tiera DeLaHoussaye in 2008. OTHER NEW FACES The Bronco bench will look a little different this year as well, with three new members on Tasha McDowell s staff. Bronco All-American and former Miss Michigan Basketball, Kristin Koetsier-Miller returns to her alma mater in the coaching ranks as an assistant coach. Also new on the bench is assistant coach Bo Bivens and Director of Operations Andrew Wodrich. Koetsier-Miller competed at WMU from 1999-2003 where she was a three-time First Team All-Mid-American Conference selection. She was most recently the head girl s basketball coach at Bloomingdale High School. Bivens has over 15 years of college coaching experience on various levels and Wodrich comes to WMU after spending the past six seasons working with the Midwest Basketball Academy in Mishawaka, Ind. SWITCH-A-ROO Senior Kemmy Dominique has changed jersey numbers, switching from #30 to #20 for 2010-11. LOOKING AT THE SCHEDULE The Broncos have a total of 13 home games, eight of those against Mid-American Conference opponents. Highlighting the non-conference slate is a home game against Michigan State and road trips to the Florida International Thanksgiving Classic as well as to the University of Washington. BRONCOS PICKED SIXTH IN WEST Western Michigan was picked sixth in the MAC West Division preseason poll. Reigning West champion Toledo earned the number one spot in the division poll, followed by Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Ball State and Northern Illinois. Defending regular-season and tournament champion Bowling Green was selected as the preseason East and tournament favorite. Kent State, Miami, Akron, Ohio and Buffalo rounded out the East poll. TIME FOR REFLECTION Western Michigan concluded the 2009-10 season with an overall record of 9-21, 4-12 in the MAC, improving its win total by two games from the previous year. After opening the conference season with eight straight losses, WMU picked up momentum down the stretch, winning four of its last eight. The Broncos ended the season on a high note with back-to-back wins over Central Michigan (64-56) and Northern Illinois (54-47). WMU was the No. 10 seed in the MAC Tournament. WINNING AT THE WIRE Five of Western Michigan s nine wins in 2009-10 were by six points or less, and one in overtime. (Southern Illinois, 82-77; Chicago State, 74-71; Saint Louis, 54-53; Loyola Chicago, 87-80, OT; Ohio, 51-47, Miami, 75-69). www.wmubroncos.com

WESTERN MICHIGAN WOMEN S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH TASHA MCDOWELL COACHING CAREER Western Michigan Head Coach, 2008-present University of Wisconsin, Assistant Coach, 2005 08 UC-Santa Barbara, Assistant Coach, 2001 05 Bradley University, Assistant Coach, 2000 01 University of Dayton, Assistant Coach, 1998 2000 St. Ambrose University, Assistant Coach, 1997 98 EDUCATION Bachelor s degree in mathematics, St. Ambrose University, 1997 PLAYING CAREER St. Ambrose University (1996 97) Southwest Missouri State University (1995-96) Illinois Central College (1993 95) In her 13th year of coaching and third season as head coach at Western Michigan is Tasha McDowell. McDowell s teams bring an up-tempo style of play with a focus on defense. In her first season as a head coach and at Western Michigan, the Broncos went 7-23 overall with three Mid-American Conference wins. However, the record may not reflect the growth of the program under McDowell. A youthful squad with just two seniors battled in every game of the season. Eight of WMU s conference losses came by six points or less including two in overtime. Bowling Green barely escaped University Arena with a win, as the five-time defending MAC champion needed extra play to beat the Broncos, 79-77, in overtime. Western Michigan s growth could also be seen in the statistics, especially on the defensive side of the ball as WMU gave up fewer points than the season before. An often undersized Bronco team made its presence felt in the paint, outrebounding MAC foes in 12 of 16 contests. Two Broncos received postseason awards for their efforts in 2008-09. Tiera DeLaHoussaye was named Third Team All-MAC and Miame Giden was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team. DeLaHoussaye closed out her career as the only player ever from the MAC to record 1,000 points, 600 assists, 500 rebounds and 300 steals in a career. A savvy scorer, Giden had the 15th highest scoring average among freshmen nationwide. DeLaHoussaye also picked up Academic All-MAC honors and was named an All-American by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. WMU improved its overall win total by two wins in McDowell s second season at the helm. Giden picked up Honorable Mention All-MAC honors and Molly Dwyer was named Academic All-MAC. Prior to Western Michigan, McDowell served as an assistant and defensive coordinator at Wisconsin from 2005-08. At UW, McDowell was the premier development coach, defensive coordinator and co-coordinator of recruiting. She worked closely with and helped develop one Kodak/WBCA All-American and four players who went on to play professionally overseas. During the 2006-07 season, McDowell helped the Badgers set a program record with 23 wins (23-13), as Wisconsin made its first post-season appearance since 2002. The Badgers posted a 4-1 record and were the runner-up champions of the WNIT, losing at Wyoming, 72-56, in the championship. Prior to her appointment at Wisconsin, McDowell was an assistant coach at UC-Santa Barbara from 2000-2005. McDowell served as the Gauchos recruiting coordinator and was also responsible for coaching the UCSB defense, helping coordinate the offense in her final season. In addition, she served as the team s community outreach coordinator and was in charge of guard development.
