After graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in forestry, he was employed as a park ranger in Yellowstone National Park. Following four years of service with the United States Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, he returned to Yellowstone and, in 1946, was appointed assistant park engineer. In 1959, he was promoted to the newly-created position of Park Historian, remaining in that post until he retired in 1969. Mr. Haines has written many articles and books, including Yellowstone National Park: Its Exploration and Establishment for the YNP centennial. Two edited works, The Valley of the Upper Yellowstone and Osborne Russell's Journal of a Trapper, made key Rocky Mountain histories available with new introductions and notes. The Yellowstone Story represents the fullest history of the Park published to date. Mountain Fever is devoted to the early history of Mount Rainier National Park. Since his retirement, Mr. Haines has served as a consultant on historical research for the National Park Service and the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation. http://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv16308 1
