R.A. Brown Ranch Quarter Horse Sale Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the ranch, Throckmorton, TX (in conjunction with our 35th Annual Bull & Female Sale) Quarter Horses RAB Quarter Horse History The remuda at the R.A. Brown Ranch was an integral part of the ranch before AQHA was even founded. R.A. Brown Sr. was a founder of the Association and served on its executive committee in the 40s. He was one of the first to be inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in honor of his contributions. The ranch has long recognized the importance of a good horse for their cowboys. When R.A. Brown Sr. returned to run the Throckmorton ranch in the late 20 s everything was done on horseback. R.A. had a herd of what he called crossbred mares, which he bred to a leased stallion from Waggoner s named Yellow Wolf. A buckskin son of Yellow Wolf, SKEET, was the first of a long list of foundation stallions used on the ranch. It wasn t long after this that R.A. and some other men got the idea of calling them Quarter Horses because of their speed for the early quarter of a mile. No one dreamed, however, that the breed would grow to the magnitude that it is today. R.A. Brown Sr., went on to become a founder of the American Quarter Horse Association. He served as an officer or director of AQHA until his death in 1965 and was named to the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1988. His son, R.A. (Rob) Brown Jr. served as AQHA President in 1995 and was also inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2004, becoming only the second father and son duo to share this honor. In the 1960 s and 1970 s R.A. Brown Ranch was ranked 8 times in the top 25 breeders of Register of Merit Performance horses, and they did not even have a show string. In 1997 R.A. Brown Ranch was named an AQHA Inaugural Legacy Award winner. In 1997 the ranch was also named as the Best Remuda Award winner. Thirty brood mares are maintained at the ranch today. Many visitors have commented that their favorite part of touring the R.A. Brown Ranch, is seeing these mares with foals at side running in the 1000 acre Mare Pasture. The Browns pasture breed and foal all of the mares in the rough, rocky hills of west Texas. The foals are halter broke around the 4th of July every year and then weaned in late September. We get an 85 to 90 percent foal crop every year this way, Rob Brown says. We try to breed them when the grass comes in spring. Most of our colts are born in March and April. That s Mother Nature s way to make it happen. We ve got some mares that have foaled within the same week for 15 years. Practically every mare on this ranch was raised here, as was her mother, her grandmother and her great-grandmother, he continues. We ve brought in very few outside mares over the years. Brown says, We re pretty aggressive animal breeders, in both our cattle and our horses, and it s worked for us for a long time. My grandfather started it, and my kids are staying with it. We need these horses, so we re going to try to make good ones. The history of mankind is carried on the back of the horse. Author Unknown
RAB Reference Sires Reference Sires Little Twistin Juan Blue Hancock Eddie Gray Stallion March 25, 1997 Registration # 3565936 Blue Hancock Eddie is a son of Hesa Eddie Hancock (who is owned by my son, Rob A. Brown and family of Stinnett, TX). Like his sire, Blue Eddie s smooth easyway of going is combined with quickness and agility. As you will see, he is breeding a high percentage of the beautiful dark iron-gray color with his outstanding head and neck. He is also passing on his excellent mind and very gentle disposition. When Blue Eddie s not with the mares, our ranch cowboys use him for everyday ranch work as well as Ranch Rodeo competitions. He can do it all, and you will see him in action on Sale Day. Red Dun Stallion March 29, 2000 Registration # 4065890 Twister (Little Twistin Juan) is our newest sire in the R.A. Brown Ranch stallion battery. He is a beautiful copper colored red dun that is athletically muscled. In three generations his pedigree has won $1,176,056 in NCHA. As you will see on October 14th, this foal crop is outstanding. They are fast learners, cat quick, good dispositions and very athletic conformations. Twister is a total outcross on our Hesa Eddie Hancock mares which include some of the early day greats: Hollywood Gold, Eddie, Joe Hancock and Blue Rock. The cow sense is bred in on these colts over and over again. Hesa Firefly Red Roan Stallion May 13, 2002 Registration # 4186797 Firefly is a 2002 red roan stallion that we purchased from our old family friends in Nebraska, Haythorn Land & Cattle Co. He s big, stout and throws an incredible hip on his offspring. Firefly is a son of Figure Four Fly 406 ( Bandit ), and out of a Happy s Warrior mare and is used daily by our ranch cowboys when he s not with mares. Docen Eddy Palomino Stallion April 6, 2000 Registration # 3919420 Docen Eddy is a beautiful golden palomino out of a Doc Bar mare. He is a super athlete and has lots of cow. Dear Friends, Dear Friends, This year we are offering 14 weanling colts and fillies in conjunction with our 35th Annual Bull Sale, October 14th. The horses can be viewed starting at 9 am and the auction will be at 11am. If you have questions or are interested in bidding and can t attend, please call before sale day. We have limited phone access on sale day but will try to accommodate your needs. The quality in this foal crop may be the best we ve ever seen in 60+ years of breeding Quarter Horses. During halterbreaking in early July, they proved to be the best-minded, gentlest foals we ve ever handled. As you ll see by the pedigrees, they represent some of the greatest foundation blood lines that ever set foot on a ranch: Joe Hancock, Eddie, Hollywood Gold, Blue Rock, Colonel Freckles, Peppy San Badger and Doc Bars. Bottom line...we raise the kind that the cowboys want. Cow sense, heart, stamina, athletic ability and gentle disposition are a must. They have all been de-wormed and received both their vaccination and booster for VEWT, Flu-Rhino, Strep and West Nile. The foals will become the responsibility of the buyer at the end of the sale. We will feed and care for the foals for up to three days after the sale at no charge. Any horses not picked up by October 17th will be charged $5/hd/day for feed and care. We are proud of this offering and think you will like what you see. Look forward to seeing you on October 14th.
