Shrewsbury School Swimming Academy Shrewsbury School Swimming Academy, opened in September 2012, strives to deliver the highest possible standards in the teaching of swimming to toddlers and children through the internationally renowned Amateur Swimming Association s national teaching plan. All lessons will be delivered by fully qualified and CRB checked swimming teachers at ratios designed to provide the most For more information about timings of lessons and prices please email the Swimming Coordinator Brooke Morgan-Brown swim@shrewsbury.org.uk or telephone Shrewsbury School Sports Facilities on 01743 280 625.

We strive to deliver the highest possible standards in the teaching of swimming to children through the internationally renowned Amateur Swimming Associations national teaching plan. The Academy welcomes people of all ages and abilities. What makes us special? We offer value for money and excellent teacher to pupil ratios; experienced and highly qualified teachers; affiliation with the Amateur Swimming Association and deliver a wide range of swimming lessons. Shrewsbury School Swimming Academy offers a range of lessons from those for nervous non-swimmers to competent swimmers requiring stroke/technique improvement. We also offer one-to-one instruction and Advanced Stroke Improvement. All classes are 30 minutes long and the children are continually assessed through the term. We provide all armbands and water aids but you are welcome to bring your own if required. Lessons run following the School Term & Holiday Program. Just before the end of each term of lessons, children will receive a Record of Achievement from their instructor with notes that detail areas of improvement and also the National Plan level that they can enroll on for the next term. On completion of a National Plan Level there is the opportunity to purchase a Swimming Badge for the appropriate Level achieved. Badges: In addition to the Level Badges that are issued at the end of each term we also have a distance badge week every half term. The assessment will encourage and test your child s swimming ability and endurance. The distances range from the 5 meters Puffin (with buoyancy aid) for younger children up to 5000 meters for more advanced swimmers. Please note that the badge achieved by your child is only an indication of their ability and skills within a water environment.

Why Your Child Should Learn To Swim? Did you know that by the time your child leaves primary school he or she should be able to swim a minimum distance of 25m unaided? This is the National Curriculum Key Stage 2 attainment level, yet an astonishing number of children leave school unable to swim 25m. It is vital that every child learns to swim and gains core knowledge regarding water safety. Learning to swim is fun, provides health benefits and could save a child s life. Sadly, drowning is the third most common form of accidental death in children, so learning to swim really is an essential life skill. The great thing about swimming is that children of any age, size or ability can take part. Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington says about learning to swim: Children absolutely love swimming, with one in three saying it s their favorite family activity. But it's not all about having fun; there are other great reasons to get your child swimming It keeps your child s heart and lungs healthy, improves strength and flexibility, increases stamina and even improves balance and posture. Your child will have plenty of opportunities to make friends and grow in confidence. Swimming opens the door to other sports and activities, including: swimming with dolphins, scuba diving, rowing and sailing and even becoming the next Olympic or Paralympic champion! It s a skill that once learnt is rarely forgotten there are even swimming events for those aged over 100. Swimming provides challenges, from working through the ASA Awards to perhaps one day swimming the English Channel. You can't always be there. It may save their life one day.

Class Structure All lessons will be delivered by fully qualified and CRB checked instructors with ratios designed to provide the most effective progression towards the different awards. Our group classes are graded by ability and our lessons follow the ASA national plan. The Academy offers pre-school instruction which includes group classes as well as parent and toddler sessions. Following this children are taught through the ASA National Plan Levels 1 to 10. We also offer one-to-one instruction and Advanced Stroke Improvement. For more information on the ASA National Plan Levels please contact Brooke Morgan-Brown Swimming Coordinator.
