Royals vs. Red Sox Tonight is scheduled to be the first of six games between these clubs, with the BoSox here thru Wednesday and then KC slated for a visit to Fenway in late August...the Royals were 3-4 vs. Boston last year, including a 1-2 mark here...kansas City trails the all-time series by a 227-231 mark, but holds a 125-103 advantage in KC, specifically 111-93 in Kauffman Stadium. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 5/16 KC 5/17 KC 5/18 KC 8/26 @ Bos 8/27 @ Bos 8/28 @ Bos SERIES DROUGHT HALTED IN WALK-OFF FASHION--It took a season-long 13 innings to complete, but the Royals finally put an end to their five-series victory drought with a 4-2 win over the Braves on Sunday...the contest ended with Kendrys Morales clubbing a 3-2 pitch over the wall to dead-center to break the 2-2 deadlock and give KC its first series victory since beating Baltimore here on April 22-24...the Royals tied a club record by employing nine pitchers in the overtime affair, with Chien-Ming Wang working a scoreless 13th and being rewarded with his second win as a Royal...Danny Duffy made the start, but was on a pitch limit and could only go 3.0 innings...he was followed by the entire bullpen and as luck would have it, the only hiccup came from Kansas City s one sure thing, when Wade Davis was touched for his first two runs of the year when trying to closeout the ninth inning...it was is first blown save since taking over the closer role for an injured Greg Holland last September...the most dominant relief performance on Sunday came from rookie Scott Alexander, who retired nine of 10 he faced in 3.0 frames...alcides Escobar led the offensive attack with his second four-hit game of the year, while Eric Hosmer added a pair of knocks. WAY AHEAD OF WALK-OFF PACE--Yesterday s game-ending blast by Kendrys Morales secured Kansas City s third walk-off win of the year, joining the April 10 win over Minnesota and May 3 vs. the Washington Nationals...last year, the Royals didn t walk an opponent off until July 3 in the 77th game of the year...the Royals and Yankees were the last two teams in baseball to have a walk-off last year and each club accomplished it on July 3...as for Morales, it was his third career walk-off home run, first that didn t involve the Seattle Mariners...he hit a walk-off grand slam to beat the M s while playing for the Angels on May 29, 2010, but then missed the remainder of that year and the entire 2011 campaign after fracturing his ankle in the celebration...k-mo then ended a game as a member of the Mariners on June 23, 2013 with a blast. BONUS BASEBALL--Yesterday s 13-inning victory was just the second overtime affair for the Royals this year, also winning a 10-inning contest over Minnesota back on April 10...Kansas City was 10-6 in regular season extra-inning games last year, but then tacked on two more in the World Series, capping the title with a 12-inning win in Game #5. ODD DAY FOR WADE--Closer Wade Davis was charged with the blown save on Sunday, when the Braves plated a pair of ninth inning runs to send the game to extra innings...it was the first time he s been scored upon this year and his first failed save conversion since taking over the closer role after Greg Holland went down last September...Davis was 16 for his last 16 save opportunities entering yesterday, not including his 4-for-4 run through last year s postseason...his last blown save prior to yesterday was on July 12 here vs. Toronto. UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY--The Royals are now a game below.500 with yesterday s win, the latest the club has been below break-even since July 22, 2014 at 49-50...the 2014 club rectified the situation by reeling off five consecutive wins and 23 out of 29 to climb back into the race and eventually land a spot in the A.L. Wild Card game and ultimately won the American League championship...the biggest issue has been KC s play on the road, going 7-13 to this point, but just 3-12 in the last 15 after a 4-1 road start...entering 2016, KC was the best away team in the Majors from 2013-15, posting a 133-110 ledger, two more wins than the Dodgers (131-112). TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Rick Porcello (6-1, 3.11) vs. RHP Yordano Ventura (3-2, 4.62) 2015 2014 Career 2016 2015 Career Rick Porcello vs. Royals 0-1 2-2 8-6 Major League Record 6-1 (0.99 ERA) 9-15 91-79 Yordano Ventura vs. Red Sox 1-0 0-2 1-2 Major League Record 3-2 (4.62 ERA) 13-8 30-21 YORDANO VENTURA makes his eighth start of the year, the 69th of his career and 70th overall appearance, with tonight his fourth career outing against the Red Sox...the 24-year-old right-hander is in the second of a five-year deal that includes two club options, which he signed on April 4, 2015. BACK IN THE WINNER S CIRCLE--After back-to-back losses, Yordano rebounded with a 7-3 victory last Wednesday in the Bronx...it was his third quality start, allowing three runs on six hits over 6.0 innings...his roughest frame was the second when he needed 31 pitches to navigate through a two-run frame...it was his first road victory of the season and seventh-straight against an American League East member, which dates back to an 8-3 triumph here vs. Tampa Bay on July 8, 2015...at 24 years, 343 days old, Yordano became the youngest Royal to win 30 games since Zack Greinke earned his 30th win on August 3, 2008 (24 years, 287 days)...he s the eighth KC hurler to win 30 games prior to his 25th birthday. SOLID NUMBERS SINCE RECALL--On July 21, 2015, Yordano was optioned to Omaha (AAA), but was recalled the following day after Jason Vargas was placed on the disabled list...since that date, he is tied for the fourth-most wins in the American League, going 12-3 with a 3.56 ERA (49 ER in 124.0 IP)...he s also seventh in opponents average (.225) and 12th in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (8.49) during that stretch among pitchers that have worked at least 120.0 innings. WALKS STILL AN ISSUE--Yordano surrendered three free passes in 6.0 innings last Wednesday, but still leads the Junior Circuit, having issued 28 walks in 37.0 innings (6.81 per 9.0 innings) this season...he s walked at least two in every start and tied a career high with six freebies on two occasions...last season, Ventura gave out 58 bases on balls in 163.1 frames (3.20 per 9.0 innings), while his career walks-per-9.0-innings ratio is 3.63 (161 BB in 398.2 IP) SLOWING THE RUN GAME--Ventura has allowed just three stolen bases in eight attempts in his 398.2 career innings...since 1950, only left-hander Don Rudolph (1957-64) has thrown more innings (450.1) and given up fewer stolen bases (two)...he s one of 13 A.L. hurlers (min. 7 starts) that has not allowed a stolen base this year. VS. BOSOX--Yordano is 1-2 with a 5.19 ERA (10 ER in 17.1 IP) in three starts against the Red Sox...he earned the lone win last season, allowing one run over 6.0 innings in a 6-3 triumph at Fenway Park August 22...the Sox are the last A.L. East club to beat Ventura, handing him a 4-2 setback here on September 12, 2014. BEAST OF THE EAST-- Ace improved to 9-3 all-time against the A.L. East in his last outing at Yankee Stadium...he s won each of his last seven starts against the division, defeating every member at least once in that stretch...ventura has a 3.19 career ERA (32 ER in 90.1 IP) vs. the East, his best against any division, while since 2014, his.750 winning percentage ranks third among pitchers with at least 10 decisions. BACK AT HOME--After three consecutive starts on the road Ventura makes his fourth appearance at Kauffman Stadium, entering at 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA (5 ER in 17.0 IP)...he s held opponents to the fifth-lowest batting average (.177) in the A.L. at home this season among hurlers that have pitched at least 15.0 innings...last Ventura vs. Red Sox Player AVG. THE COMEBACK KIDS--In winning 11 games during the 2015 postseason, the Royals had to come from behind in eight of those victories, including an unprecedented seven comebacks from a multiple-run deficit...kc rallied from a one-run deficit in Game #2 of the World Series against the Mets, while coming back from two runs behind on three other occasions during the Fall Classic, capped by the two-run rally in the top of the ninth inning of the deciding Game #5, sending the game to extra innings with the Royals plating five runs in the 12th to seal the title...kansas City also rallied from a two-run deficit in the deciding game of the ALDS vs. the Astros to advance to the League Championship Series vs. Toronto...the Royals came from three runs back in Game #2 of both the ALDS vs. Houston and the ALCS vs. the Blue Jays...the biggest comeback of the fall matched the same scenario of the 2014 Wild Card game vs. the A s, as KC was down by four runs to Houston with six outs to go in game #4 at Minute Maid Park, but plated five in the top of the eighth and two more in the ninth to get to a deciding Game #5 in Kauffman Stadium. vs. Red Sox (2015) vs. Red Sox (career) At Home (career) Porcello (career) Price (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Butera.375 8 3 0 0.190 21 4 0 0.178 394 70 2 25.250 8 2 1 3.400 5 2 0 0 Cain.250 28 7 0 2.250 80 20 2 9.295 936 276 20 126.385 13 5 0 1.364 11 4 1 1 Colon.200 5 1 0 0.200 5 1 0 0.270 100 27 0 5 - - - - -.500 6 3 0 1 Cuthbert - - - - - - - - - -.234 47 11 1 8 - - - - - - - - - - Dyson.000 2 0 0 0.158 38 6 0 2.265 584 155 6 54.182 11 2 0 0 - - - - - Escobar.280 25 7 1 4.260 127 33 2 9.266 1792 477 11 153.176 34 6 0 2.286 7 2 0 0 Gordon.333 6 2 0 0.347 176 61 6 29.272 2120 577 69 290.268 41 11 2 7.214 14 3 0 2 Hosmer.300 30 9 1 3.294 143 42 5 23.279 1394 389 37 185.346 26 9 2 3.182 11 2 0 0 Infante.261 23 6 0 0.292 171 50 1 12.263 2538 668 29 245.500 12 6 0 0.222 9 2 1 2 Morales.259 27 7 1 4.269 156 42 5 21.279 1629 454 69 267.200 25 5 1 3.238 21 5 0 1 Orlando.000 6 0 0 0.000 6 0 0 0.284 155 44 4 18 - - - - -.000 6 0 0 0 Perez.235 17 4 2 4.221 77 17 2 10.279 1009 282 30 149.250 24 6 1 2.333 9 3 1 2 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
