San Francisco Giants (2-1) at LOS ANGELES DODGERS (1-2) RHP Chris Stratton (4-4, 3.68 in 17) at LHP Rich Hill (12-8, 3.32 in 17) Sunday, April 1, 2018 5:37 p.m. Dodger Stadium Los Angeles, CA Game 4 Home Game 4 Night Game 3 TV: ESPN Radio: ESPN Radio/AM 570 (English); KTNQ 1020 AM BACK IN BUSINESS: The Dodgers won their first game of the 2018 campaign last night, blanking the Giants in the third contest of a fourgame set, 5-0. Tonight, Los Angeles and San Francisco will be the ESPN National broadcast for the second time in four days as the Dodgers look to even their record and the series with the Giants. Following tonight s game, the Dodgers will fly to Phoenix (we ve missed you Phoenix!) and begin a three-game series against the Diamondbacks tomorrow night at 6:40 p.m. After an off day in San Francisco on Thursday, Los Angeles will play three games at AT&T Park next weekend against the Giants, before returning home for a two-game Interleague series with the Oakland Athletics April 10 and 11. TRADEWINDS: The Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals swung a trade earlier today with the Dodgers welcoming infielder Breyvic Valera to the 40-man roster in exchange for minor league outfielder Johan Mieses. Valera, 26, has posted a.303 career batting average with 130 doubles, 36 triples, 14 home runs, 304 RBI and 236 stolen bases along with a.359 on-base percentage in 800 minor league games over eight seasons with the Cardinals organization (2010-17). The utility player has played the majority of his career at second base (444 games), but has also seen time at shortstop (121 games), third base (64 games), left field (103 games), right field (37 games) and center field (10 games). Valera was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cardinals on May 16, 2010. KING OF THE HILL: Dodger left-hander Rich Hill takes the mound for his first start of the season tonight as he enters his 14th big league campaign and his third year with the Dodgers. In 2017, Hill posted a 12-8 record with a 3.32 ERA (50 ER/135.2 IP) and struck out 166 batters against just 49 walks, averaging 11.01 strikeout per nine innings and posting a 3.39 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In 119 career Major League starts, he has gone 46-34 with a 3.90 ERA and has limited batters to a.223 average. The southpaw held opposing right-handed batters to a.190 mark last year, which ranked sixth lowest in the Majors in 2017. Hill has stymied the Giants throughout his career, going 5-2 with a 2.43 ERA (18 ER/66.2 IP) in 11 career starts (six with Los Angeles). Last season, Hill was masterful in three starts against San Francisco, going 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA (3 ER/16.2 IP) while striking out 18 against just three walks. Both of those wins last year came at Dodger Stadium, where he limited the Giants to a.175 average (7-for-40) in 11.2 innings. MATTY BOOM BATTY: Dodger left fielder Matt Kemp officially returned to the club on Thursday for a second stint after starring in L.A. from 2006-14 and went 1-for-3 with a walk on Opening Day. Kemp s hit gave him 1,189 as an L.A. Dodger, which ranks 10 th all-time, 15 behind Davey Lopes for ninth. Last night was Kemp s 1,118 th game as a Dodger, moving him past Dusty Baker and into sole possession of 15 th on the all-time Los Angeles Dodger list. His three at-bats last night give him 4,075 and also move him ahead of Baker for 13 th on the all-time list. Kemp also ranks among the all-time L.A. Dodgers in home runs (182, 4 th ), runs scored (650, 8 th ), doubles (215, 7 th ), RBI (648, 6 th ), batting average (.292, 6 th ), on-base percentage (.349, 10 th ) and slugging percentage (.495, 5 th ). The team earned a World Series berth after defeating the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS, 4 games to 1, and finished the season with their first National League Pennant since 1988. The Dodgers posted the seventh 100-win season in franchise history (third in Los Angeles history) and first since 1974 (102-60). The Dodgers won 90+ games for the fifth consecutive season, a feat that had only previously been accomplished once in franchise history, 1951-56 (6). Los Angeles finished with the best record in the Majors for the first time since 1974 and the National League s best record for the first time since 2009. The Dodgers set a Los Angeles record for victories with 104 (104-58), tying for the second most in franchise history (also: 1942, 104-50). THE ROSTER: Of the 25 active players who appear on the Dodgers Opening Day active roster, 22 contributed to the club s 2017 National League pennant-winning squad. Of the 25 players on the Dodger active roster, eight countries are represented (Cuba, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela). FEARLESS LEADER: Dodger skipper Dave Roberts is entering his third season as the Dodger manager, following a 2016 campaign in which he was named National League Manager of the Year and a 2017 season in which he piloted the Dodgers to their first NL pennant in 29 years. Roberts joined Hall of Famers Tommy Lasorda (1977-78) and Joe Torre (2008-09) as the only L.A. managers to lead the club to the Postseason in their first two years with the team.
