FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Is this the year that Spring forgets to spring? It just seems like we can t even buy a couple of really nice days this one in a row thing has got to stop! According to WIBW in Topeka, this is the third weakest Spring for severe weather since 1990. That isn t all bad news, but it would be nice to see some warmer temperatures and rain every so often On the golf course, we are starting to see some signs that winter is all but over a little green up in the fairways, tees and rough, trees budding out, more play on the nice days and more divots. This early in the season, replacing your divots on the fairways is beneficial in that it should re-root and ensure better fairway playing surfaces. It is never wrong to fill a divot with sand, but in the early part of the season divots have a better chance of survival so please replace it when possible. With or without nice weather, we are starting to see a rise on air and soil temperatures. With that comes an increase in mowing frequency, cup and tee set-up, and general course care and maintenance. With that, greens aerification will occur on April 7 th. We will be pulling out all of the tricks to promote healing as quickly as possible, but if we don t see some warmer weather, it may take a little longer than usual to get all of the holes filled in. Also this spring we will be working on dethatching the fairways and replacing sod in bare areas. Finally, we are finishing the process of cleaning up all of the native areas on the golf course. Last fall all native areas were mowed to knock down the undesirable vegetation. We are currently making the necessary pre-emergent chemical applications to keep the weeds down and revitalize those key areas. Additionally, we will be treating any escape weeds this spring to ensure we maintain the aesthetic value of those areas. Bill Irving billirving@sunflower.com @lccozzie on Twitter
