OPENING ACTIVITY: EXTREME RING CHALLENGE Lesson 2 Purpose: This activity will engage the children s attention as they enter the room and will reinforce the Winter Extreme X-Factor games theme. Description: The children will compete in a winter activity, one team at a time. The teams will be timed to see who can use the chopstick to get the most Fruit Loops into the empty jar. Whichever team gets the most Fruit Loops in the empty jar in thirty seconds will be the winning team for that round. Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, generic chopsticks, Fruit Loops, two jars (one will be empty and the other will be filled with Fruit Loops ), and the Opening Activity media elements from the Lesson 2 MediaShout or ProPresenter File. Note: Play the Doors Open Music when the children begin to enter the room. To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. Let s get started! 2. We are going to play a timed game called Extreme Ring Challenge. 3. We are going to pick one volunteer from one team at a time to come up on stage. 4. The volunteer will use a chopstick to loop one Fruit Loop at a time through the chopstick. The volunteer will then carry the Fruit Loop on the chopstick to the empty jar. 5. Be sure and drop the Fruit Loop into the empty jar gently, because if it breaks, it doesn t count. 6. You will have thirty seconds (shorter or longer) to get as many Fruit Loops into the empty jar as you can. 7. Once you ve finished, we will count up the Fruit Loops and then someone from the next team will play. 8. The team that gets the most Fruit Loops into the empty jar in the time limit will be the winner of that round. Note: If you are able to play multiple rounds, you could instead keep a running score of all of the team s points and, at the end, whichever team got the most Fruit Loops will be the grand champion of that day s Opening Activity. Note: Choose one volunteer from one team. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, watch the Teacher/Co-Teacher Training Video. 2016 Elevate
During the activity, say the following: 1. Are you ready? Kids, are you ready to cheer for your teammates? Okay! 2. Ready, Set, Go! Note: Play the Game Go Music. 3. Keep getting those rings! 4. Kids, keep cheering. 5. And, stop. 6. Great job! 7. Now it s time for us to pick a new volunteer from the next team and play again. Note: Reset the game by counting the Fruit Loops in the empty jar and placing them back in the jar with all of the Fruit Loops. Continue playing this game with new volunteers until it is time to start your children s worship hour. After this activity, say the following: 1. Great job with that game! 2. Let s get ready for our countdown to Winter Extreme! 2016 Elevate

It s time for some more extreme winter games! I m pumped and ready! It s team speed skating today, and I love team speed skating! The teams are just warming up with their time trials right now. Don t worry, we ll tune in before the race actually starts, I promise. In fact, I think we have enough time to get you all warmed up with a song and a little competition. Everybody, stand up! Teacher leads the children in singing Everlasting. [2] Then play the Drumroll and the Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team and award them a Winter Extreme Medallion. [3] #1 #2 #3 #4 Now that was some great warm up singing! (looks at watch) We re still fine on time. In fact we have enough time to go over our rules of the mountain! [4] Do you remember them? (allows children to respond) Let s read them together. [5] Rule number one is be respectful of authority and always do what they tell you to do. And rule number two is [6] be respectful of those around you - no talking, no pushing, no kicking, or saying mean things. #5 #6 1 2016 Elevate
Okay, now I d like us to take the little bit of time we have to introduce what we re talking about this week: Helping others. It sounds easy, and you may think I do that! but helping others isn t always just helping those we like. We need to be willing to help out everyone. Even if the people have been mean to us. Even if we don t like them. And even if we don t get anything out of it when we help them. Jesus taught that if we want to be disciples of Jesus we must show love by helping others around us no matter who they are and even if we don t get anything out of it. In fact, Jesus wants us to help others even if it costs us something. And, this is such an important part of discipleship I think we should make it our Main Point. Everybody, stand and help me shout this as loud as you can. Disciples Of Jesus Help Others, Even If It Costs Us! [7] The Teacher leads the children to make up cheerleader-type hand motions that go along with the Main Point. Once everyone has gone over the Main Point, have the children repeat it with the motions two or three times. Play the Drumroll and Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team. [8] Encourage all the children to participate. Award the winning team with a Winter Extreme Medallion. Now that s the kind of shouting I m talking about! Great job. That Main Point is what Jesus taught us. Jesus taught us a parable about helping others even when it costs us, and it s found in the book of Luke. It s called the story of the Good Samaritan. Let s take a look. Play Bible Lesson Video. [9] Wow, that s awesome that the Samaritan did all of that to help the Jewish man. And he did it even though it was a person he didn t like. To go even further, the Samaritan gave up his time and money to help the Jewish man...he did exactly what our Main Point says, he helped others even though it cost him. And look, we re just in time to see how well the teams did in the speed skating time trials. I hope Rock Steadfast and Scooter do okay. Let s find out! #7 #8 #9 Teacher exits. Play the Skit Video. [10] Teacher re-enters. Wow, what a race! And that was really cool that Rock chose to help out the other team. That must have been hard to help them and then lose the race. Helping the other team cost them a lot. I bet you are wondering what Rock meant when he said that they didn t lose? Well, Rock and Scooter clearly lost the race but when you look at the big picture, they really won. They did the right thing and helped out even though it cost them. That makes them winners. Doing the right thing and helping others is way more important than winning a race. I have a Bible Verse that will help us understand even more. It s Titus 3:14a. [11] #10 #11 2 2016 Elevate
Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others Titus 3:14a (NLT) The Teacher leads the children with motions and then see which team can do the Bible Verse the best. Play the Drumroll and the Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team, and award the winning team with a Winter Extreme Medallion. [12] God says in this verse that we do good when we meet the needs of others. And we always want to do good, right? Remember from last week that we should always obey what God wants us to do and if He says we should do good and help others, I m going to do it! Say, watching that competition got me in the competing mood again. I think we should have a little team competion! [13] TEAM GAME - Snowball Challenge Watch the Teacher and Co-Teacher Training Video and see the Help Sheet to learn how the game is played. Play it with the teams and then play the Drumroll and Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team. Award the winning team with a Winter Extreme Medallion. [14] Before we go to our Winter Extreme Small Groups, I think it would be a good idea to take some time to thank God for all He has done for us by bringing Him our Offering. One of the ways we can help other people is by bringing some of what we have been blessed with. Some of the money you bring for the Offering goes to help people who are in need. That s one of the reasons why our Offering is so important. It s one of the ways we worship God, but it is also a way that we can help others. Teacher leads the children in taking the Offering. [15] OFFERING Thank you for giving. In a moment we ll break up into our Team Groups where we will learn about some specific ways that we can help the people around us in our lives. But before we do that, let s all stand and sing our second song! Teacher leads the children in singing Heartbeat. [16] Play the Drumroll and the Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team and and award the winning team with a Winter Extreme Medallion. [17] All right, now it s time to head to our Winter Extreme Team Groups! We ll see you back here in just a few minutes! TEAM GROUPS (SMALL GROUPS) [18] #12 #13 #14 #15 #16 #17 #18 3 2016 Elevate
Now that everyone is back from Team Groups, let s have a little Extreme Competition! Play the Extreme Competion Race Video. [19] After the Race Video, play the Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team and award the winning team a Winter Extreme Medallion. [20] And now it s time to see how well you paid attention today. It s time to Help Team Extreme! [21] WEEKLY REVIEW ACTIVITY - Help Team Extreme Teacher leads the children through the questions. Bring up a child from each team and have them compete to see who gets to answer. If they answer correctly, give them a Winter Extreme Medallion. Thank you for helping me. Look for times this week when you can help other people. It s just like our Main Point says: Disciples Of Jesus Help Others, Even If It Costs Us! Have a great week! #19 #20 #21 4 2016 Elevate
