CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Pinehurst Chapter - American Singles Golf Association May 2014 President s Message It surely is golf season. Hope you all are taking advantage of the events that Mike has put together for us. Since I have not been able to play much, work and a shoulder injury I have had the opportunity to look at the club as a whole. It is clear that the Golf Chairperson is the engine of this whole operation. I am so grateful to Mike Young. He has done a remarkable job over the past 3 years. He keeps this club going. Thank you Mike!! While I am at it Martez and Betty keep us in fun and food after all of our events. Big thanks to them too. There was no mountain trip put together this year but a beach trip is in the making. Keep tuned. ~Jolly Erickson, jdee@nc.rr.com Golf Chair Spring is sprung, the grass is riz, let's go where the birdies is. The weather certainly is more conducive to hitting the fairways now and we have opportunities to take advantage of that. We'll be visiting the new and improved Whispering Woods on the 30th of April for a 9 & dine followed by two visits to Pinewild in May. On the 15th we'll play the Holly course and on the 29th we'll take on the par-3 Azalea's challenges. Our 18 hole events will both be on Saturdays this month - The popular Legacy on the 10th and the relentless Pinehurst #7 on the 24th. Our next 18 hole outing will be at Southern Pines on the 1st of June. Our clinic at Knollwood Fairways on the 21st will highlight the short game where there are many strokes to be salvaged. We took on Pinewild's Magnolia layout on the 13th and Jamie Fisher won took the Closest to the Pin honors for the Ladies while Jim Tomashoff won in the Gents' division with a shot that stopped scant inches from the hole. Congratulations to you both. In the team portion of the competition Jamie, Jeryl Bratcher, Mike Hunter and Paul Mago took first place by three shots over Kathy Eaton, Kathy's guest, Marla Hemphill, Chuck Lane and Mike Young. Our 9 & Dine at Foxfire on the 22nd saw a three way tie for first place with Michaela Meisel, Martez Norris and Earl Quam sharing the winners' circle. The Golf Chair chose an ill-advised par three for closest to the pin where Betty and Michaela were both inches from the green but no one was on it. I'll select better next time. (Hopefully, we'll hit better shots, too!!) With the upcoming U.S. Opens at Pinehurst the area will be inundated with visitors and the greens fees will rise correspondingly. We shall not be paying $100 or more to play our events so after the 18 hole outing at Southern Pines we'll go back to our own courses to play until the 28th of June when we'll head out to Caro- Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Memorial Day Weekend - May 22-25, 2014. A couple of thoughts about our play - as usual we prefer to play "ready golf" to maintain a reasonable pace of play. Also, for our own safety, when we finish play on a hole, let's exit the green area so the players behind can hit their approach shots without any of us being in harm's way. This is especially important on the 18th hole when many players have the tendency to dig out keys, wallets, etc. and put balls, gloves, etc. away before leaving the green area. Let's use our common sense and be safe. Speaking of common sense - our mothers were right - Words of Wisdom - "Greens are good for you". ~Mike Young myoung189@nc.rr.com Golf Tip - Grip Your grip should be in the fingers of both hands, not the palms. Most of the grip pressure should be felt in the last three fingers of your left hand. There is much less pressure in the right hand. There should be no pressure at all in the thumb and forefinger of the right hand. Keep your overall grip pressure light. Don't "squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube." Make sure your grip is strong enough, with both V's pointing over your right shoulder. A strong left hand grip produces solid shots. Keep hands close together. For low ball flight, keep grip pressure firm throughout swing. To promote a fade, keep left grip firm and right grip light. When putting, keep palms facing each other. For better accuracy when putting, make both V's in your grip point to your chin. To avoid trouble on the right, strengthen your grip. To avoid trouble on the left, weaken your grip.
