MAY, 2016 NEWSLETTER Disc Golf Course at Camp Walker Work is underway on a brand new Disc Golf Course at Camp Walker. Bobby Hermann, course designer for Innova Disc Golf, has completed the layout for the course, and work has already Saturday in the Park Hampshire County Parks and Recreation is proud to announce its third annual Saturday in the Park, which will be held on August 6 beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Central Hampshire Park in Augusta. Saturday in the Park is a celebration to commemorate Hampshire County s rich parks and recreation heritage, and it also shows our appreciation to the citizens of our county for their support of the events and programs that HCP&R has sponsored over the past several years. After dinner, at approximately 6:00 p.m., the rest of the kids activities will kick in. We will have games of all sorts, including relay races and guessing games, along with face painting. Kids who want to participate in the relays and other games should wear clothes that they don t mind getting dirty and/or wet, because some of the activities could get quite messy. This promises to be a great day of outdoor family fun and excitement. Bring sunscreen and plan to spend the whole afternoon and early evening with HCP&R. Now that s a day I know you don t want to miss! The celebration has something for everyone. Afternoon events for teens and adults will be as follows: 1:00- Three-on-Three Basketball Tourney; 2:00- Horseshoe Tourney; 3:00- Cornhole Tourney; 4:00- Volleyball Tourney. We will have a Water Slide and Bouncy House for the kids from 2:00 until 5:00. Kids may come at any time during those three hours and stay as long as they want to enjoy the fun. A free dinner for everyone, which includes a hot dog, chips, a cookie for dessert, and a drink, will be served from 5:00 until 6:00 p.m.
Gary Crane Cup Golf Competition The next qualifier for the 2016 Gary Crane Cup will be held on Tuesday, August 16, when we travel to Lakeview Resort in Morgantown. The cost for 18 holes of golf with a cart will be just $30, and the first tee times begin at 1:00 p.m. The rules for the Crane Cup are the same as last year. Those wanting to be part of the competition must play in at least three of the six qualifiers and turn in their score cards to the pro shop after the rounds so a handicap can be tabulated. We will use that handicap to crown both a gross and a net champion at the Final Round, which will be held October 4 th at Capon Springs Resort. Lakeview is a new course for the Crane Cup this year. This is a fantastic opportunity to play one of the very best courses in the state at a price nearly every golfer can afford. Even if you aren t interested in the competition for the Crane Cup, come on out and join us for a relaxing round with others who share a passion for the game. I know you ll be glad that you did. Disc Golf Course at Camp Walker The Camp Walker Disc Golf Course is open and ready for play. I ve talked to several people around the community, and response to the layout has been overwhelmingly positive. I ve visited the course several times in the evening, and nearly every time I ve been there one or more groups have been playing. There are still some rough edges to the course. We have ordered tee signs and are working on a course layout, but neither is finished yet. Here are some questions that I ve encountered about the course: What score is par for the course? All the holes are par three, so par for each nine holes is 27. Where do I begin play? The tee for hole number one is on the flat ground at the far end of the park, past the pavilion, where the road bears left and starts down over the hill. The basket for number one is straight up the hill from the tee. There are directional markers at each basket for the next tee. Once you play hole one you shouldn't have any trouble finding the rest of the tees and baskets. I hope you ll pardon the inconvenience, but we re working hard to get the Camp Walker Course in championship shape as fast as we can. In the meantime, go on out and enjoy a relaxing nine or eighteen holes at one of the prettiest spots in all of Hampshire County. It s a great workout that challenges both your skill and your endurance. Discount Tickets to King s Dominion Hampshire County Parks and Recreation has entered into an agreement with King s Dominion to offer discount tickets to the park for the coming summer. These are Any-Time Tickets that are good for admittance to the park any day that it is open. The price for each ticket is $37, which is a considerable savings from the normal $66 admission fee. this summer, this is a deal that you can t afford to pass up. Clay Shoot at North River Retreat HCP&R will sponsor a Clay Shoot at North River Retreat on Saturday, September 17, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The cost for the shoot will be as follows: 2 rounds of 25 clays each using your own shells will be just $15; 2 rounds of 25 clays each purchasing shells from NRR is just $25. As always, the loan of shotguns, vests, and eye and ear protection is free. Also, drinks and snacks are available at no cost. Due to environmental concerns, shells that do not contain lead shot are now required at North River Retreat. To meet this requirement, NRR has steel shot at the range for sale. You are welcome to bring your own shells, but they must not contain lead shot. If you are bringing your own shotguns to the range, please check with the manufacturer to make certain that they are compatible with steel shot. Some older models of shotguns and/or screw-in chokes are not compatible and may pose a danger to the shooter. If you are interested in the shoot, get your reservation in as soon as possible, as there is a limit of 15 shooters allowed. Spots will be awarded on a firstcome-first-served basis. I know you ll be glad that you did! Walk To Be Fit Program If you haven't registered for Walk To Be Fit yet, you still have plenty of time to get in on the fun. The program runs through October 31, and the format will be basically the same as last year. Our two corporate sponsors, FNB Bank and the Hampshire Wellness and Fitness Center, have agreed to join us again this year, so just go to any FNB location (Ft. Ashby, Romney, Hampshire Square, or Capon Bridge), to the Wellness and Fitness Center at Hampshire Square, or to the HCP&R Office at 90 North High Street in Romney to register for the program. When you sign up, be sure to pick up your free pedometer and a tally sheet to record the miles that you walk. Prizes will be awarded for five milestones (100, 250, 500, 1,000, and 1,500 miles). When you have reached one of our milestones, or when your tally sheet is filled up, just return it to the location where you picked it up, and we will contact you when you are eligible for a prize. Walk To Be Fit is a great way to get healthier while spending time outdoors, and you just might win some wonderful prizes for your efforts. Zumba and Kettlebell Classes HCP&R is now offering Kettlebell and Zumba classes five nights per week. The classes are held at the Glo Tanning Salon, which is located directly across Route 50 from the Century 21 office. All classes will run from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m.
Kettlebells are cast iron weights shaped like a ball with a handle for easy gripping. Kettlebells offer a different kind of training using dynamic moves targeting almost every aspect of fitness endurance, strength, balance, agility, and cardio endurance. People love it because it's challenging, efficient, and you only need one piece of equipment. Kettlebell classes will be taught by certified instructor Kaleena Wilfong. Zumba is a great way to have fun while dancing your way to a healthier lifestyle. Certified instructors Amy Delaplain and Kristen Whetzel will once more serve as our Zumba instructors. The cost for both classes is $5 per session, or for $20 you may purchase a punch card that is good for five sessions of Kettlebell and/or Zumba. Also, we are now selling a monthly card for $50. The schedule for classes is as follows: Kettlebell- Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday; Zumba- Monday and Wednesday. Even if you ve never tried either Kettlebell or Zumba before, come on out and see what they re all about. Mark your calendars today so you don t miss a chance to get some exercise while having a great time with your friends. Adult Open Gym Basketball For those of you who want to show off your basketball skills, check out our Sunday night Open Gym Basketball on both ends of the county. Shane Hawkins is in charge of the program at the old Capon Bridge Middle School gym, and they play there from 5:00 until 8:00 every Sunday evening. Travis Delaplain and Roger Eversole run the program at Romney Middle School, and they go from 6:00 until 8:00 each Sunday night. Pavilion and Park Reservations On Monday, January 4, HCP&R began taking pavilion and park reservations for the 2016 season. The rental season extends from April 11 through October 15, 2016. Before and after those dates, running water will not be available in any of our parks. Pavilions for picnics, family reunions, or any other outdoor gathering may be rented at either Hampshire Park or Central Hampshire Park. Prices for the entire day run from $35 to $45, depending on the size of the pavilion rented. You may also rent the amphitheater at Central Hampshire for only $55 per day. If you have a larger gathering, you may want to rent an entire park, either at Green Spring Park ($40 to $95, depending on facilities desired) or Camp Walker ($65 for the whole park the entire day). All our parks now have electric outlets, running water, and restroom facilities.
