November, 2013 Volume 2, Issue 7 INDIAN HILLS NEWSLETTER Inside this issue: WINTER THOUGHTS 2 COURSE NOTES 4 SPECIAL! 4 CONTACT INFO. 5 NEWS Winter is upon us; golf weather will be hard to come by for awhile. Never the less, the Pro Shop at Indian Hills remains open for any golf related needs that you may have. If the weather permits, we will allow play on the golf course. We can open the course for play if there is no snow, ice, frost or a lot of excess water, so give us a call if the conditions look favorable. Often it is much easier for us to open the course than it would be for a much larger golf course. Starting in December the winter Pro Shop hours are Monday and Wednesday 10:00-6:00, Friday 10:00-5:00, and Saturday 10:00-4:00. We will be closed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays unless it turns out that the weather is nice enough to open the golf course. That may sound like wishful thinking, but we do usually manage to open at least one or two days even in January and February. If you are thinking about golf related gifts at this time of year, we are happy to help. Almost everybody appreciates golf gifts- they invoke memories of warm summer days and fun in the sun. We certainly offer golf clubs, golf balls, golf bags, training aids, and accessories such as headcovers. If you or your gift recipients like Titleist golf balls, you can get free personalization up until December 31st. Usually, unless you are very sure of your gift recipient s desires, it makes sense to give a gift certificate. Gift certificates can be used for anything that we sell and they never expire. We can always refund any unused balance if necessary. In the case of golf clubs, if we have custom built some clubs already and we have the necessary specifications, then we can certainly add more clubs. If we have not made clubs for an individual, then the first step would be a fitting session. The session takes about an hour (sometimes a little more) and the cost is $50.00. This cost is then credited towards the cost of any clubs that we build. The gift of a club-fitting session can be the most valuable thing for golfers, especially if they are not certain whether their old clubs were properly fit to them. We highly recommend the custom fitting session as a gift. Whether purchasing new clubs or retrofitting old ones, hopefully it will result in the golfer having absolute confidence in their golf clubs. 1

HELPFUL TIPS Page 2 Here in Michigan, most of us are faced with a hiatus from golf due to winter weather. If you really love golf, and want to play better golf in the future, winter can be an excellent opportunity to improve some aspects of your game heading into next season.. Step one on the way to better golf is to evaluate your game and discover which aspects are most in need of improvement. Then, practice with a plan. Practice in the winter is ideal for improving because you can focus on the process without being distracted by the results (your score). If, after some dedicated practice, you feel that the original issues are not being solved, perhaps your golf clubs themselves are not performing optimally. For example, if your main problem is slicing with the driver, and you have practiced diligently but the slice remains, then perhaps it is time for a new driver that is built to counteract a slice (there are many drivers with this feature because slicing is such a common issue). As always, I must promote the benefits of practicing putting, because it is such a big part of the game (most golfers use the putter for at least 40% of their strokes), but also because putting is the easiest thing to practice at home. Even if you are a good putter, putting can always be improved. Every golfer faces many putts each round that are less than six feet; they generally look easy as you walk onto the green, but when you stand over the ball, your confidence may begin to dwindle. If you put the time into practicing these putts in the off-season, your confidence level will be higher when you actually face them on the golf course. Practicing short putts only requires a carpeted surface at least six feet long. If the speed of the carpet seems too slow or too fast, that s OK. Green speeds will vary on the course too, but practice can ingrain your set-up and routine so that it becomes automatic. Putt one ball to another ball, it is the right size to represent a cup. For tips on routine, go to http:// www.prescriptiongolf.com/booksample/recommended%20putting% 20Routine.pdf If you make hundreds of short putts, it will start to seem simple and easy. There are many training aids that can help your practice: if you use a straight back and through stroke, we have the Straight Trax Putting Aid ($24.99+tx) to promote a straight stroke. If you have a putter and putting method that relies on an arcing stroke, check out tips from Marius Filmalter (a guru of professionals) : http://www.mariusgolf.com/3-common-putting-faults/ Practicing the full swing in the winter can be a little more of a challenge. Usually we would recommend the range at Forest Akers East because it does allow you to hit full shots and see the entire ball flight. 2

Page 3 Rubber mats tend to allow the golfer to get away with slightly fat shots; results might not translate to real turf. However, if your main issue is contact with irons off the fairway, do keep in mind that hitting off of a rubber mat is not exactly like hitting off of turf. Rubber mats tend to allow the golfer to get away with slightly fat shots (the club contacts the ground just before the ball); results might not translate to real turf. Practicing with a driver at the range should be much more similar to hitting the driver under regular golfing conditions, although the ball won t fly as far in the cold air as it will in the summer. For most golfers, the difficult part is figuring out what sort of changes to make. If you are going to attempt to make changes, you don t want to simply cause a bunch of new problems. We can help. Call and make an appointment to see Sam, he will be able to make recommendations about your golf clubs and your swing that can lead to improved performance. It is very common, however, to be required to take a step back before taking two steps forward. This is what we mean about focusing on the process rather than results. In the summer, if you take a lesson, you will try to put the new swing or swing thoughts into play immediately, and if you don t see huge improvements immediately it may be difficult to remain committed. In the winter, you have the opportunity to truly ingrain the new swing or become familiar with new clubs before the season starts. If you are dedicated and apply yourself, you should be able to improve (hopefully enough to really notice). If your ball flight or consistency does not improve enough, it may very well be the case that your golf clubs are not ideal for the flight that you are trying to create. If your best shots with a driver fly too low, or there are not enough good solid shots, you may require more loft. The same applies to long shots with fairway woods. Conversely, if you feel that your ball usually flies too high, or curves excessively, you may require stiffer shafts or possibly heavier clubs. Remember, we always guarantee clubs that we build. So if you are looking for a particular type of ball flight or performance, we are always happy to build a club and let you try it out. If it is really not ideal, we can refund your money. Often different golf clubs really can improve performance, but you will never know until you try. 3

J.C. s COURSE NOTES The big winds of Nov. 17th left their mark on the golf course. We lost several trees and big limbs, with smaller branches and twigs blanketing the course. Despite the mess and work ahead we were quite fortunate. Most of the downed trees were on their last roots and not critically located. Sam and Kevin spent the next several days clearing the course while I ran the log splitter I must say the gleam in Sam s eyes when he s using a chainsaw is a bit disturbing. We did manage to clear the course of all but the biggest and most dangerous stuff which we left for our tree cutting expert, Gary. By the way, if any of you need tree work done, Gary is excellent. He s done work for us for years and is licensed, honest and very reasonable. I would be happy to put you in touch. We finished the traps at #8 and #9 greens recently. Hoof marks in the fresh sand indicate that Bambi and friends are pleased. We plan on doing the traps at #1 green next. Pulling the traps a bit farther from the green and reducing the faces will make them less punitive and easier to maintain. Congrats to former employee Scott Stolz on his first hole-in-one. Scott worked on the course while a student at Okemos and CMU. He aced the eighth hole on Nov. 16th with a sand wedge while playing with his dad. This is the time of year we are reminded to give thanks for our good fortune. Personally, I have much to be grateful for. I have a great family, a job I love and wonderful members and customers. I would especially like to thank the golf course staff for their great efforts. I am blessed to have such a hard working group. A business is pretty much as good as its employees, and mine are tremendous. They take pride in their work and do the extras without drama. SAM, Jeff, Ken, Eric and Scott inside, and Kevin, Jon, Jerrod, Janet and Grant outside, you re the best. SPECIAL!! BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE!!
