Neepawa Golf & Country Club Spring Newsletter 2012
PRESIDENTS REPORT Looks like spring is here and it is time for our annual news letter. What a difference a year makes. Last year we still had several feet of snow and we were concerned, rightly so, that flooding could be an issue. What an understatement? We did not get full use of our course till July. Well this year looks much different with the course opening April 4 th 2012. This is probably one of the earliest season openings. Let s hope that we get the heat now to keep the season going. Your executive for the upcoming year is as follows: President Warren McLeod Vice-President Janice Plaisier Treasurer: - Janice Plaisier Secretary Mitch Hutton Grounds Chair Doug Carson - Committee members Mark Morehouse, Jason McLaren & Tom Madsen - Golf Operation Chair Jason McLaren - Committee members Mitch Hutton & Mark Morehouse - Promotions Chair Heather Douglas - Committee members of Tom Madsen, Janice Plaisier and Dean Fletcher - Management Chair Dean Fletcher - Committee members of Mitch Hutton and Doug Carson. Your executive is committed to making Neepawa Golf & Country Club a course of destination and a memorable golf experience. We felt that with Landon & Kirby, being a big part of our team that a favorable experience is easily attainable. We are so pleased to have them back. I would like to thank Martin Hales and Kris Jacobsen for all their contributions to the Board and Membership over their time on the board. Due to other commitments they felt they needed to take a break from the Board at this time. Thanks again guys. We don t have any major projects on the go this year now that the clubhouse is for the most part completed with only small items left to do. We had a casino bingo in February 2012 and I just want to thank the volunteers that worked it for us as it generated $3,000.00. We have just received another bingo for Monday May 7, 2012 from 6-9:45 so you if you can help out please let Landon know. We have some that have already volunteered but we still need some more. We again plan to continue with the cash draw tickets and these will be available soon. As this is such a big part of our fundraising we will be expecting all to participate in selling them so the Club can continue to do upgrades that are always needed in any club. The Board thanks you all in advance for your support with this fundraiser. At this time I just want to welcome everyone back for the 2012 season. Looks like an early start so let s hope it continues and we have a long and prosperous year. Warren McLeod, President
PRO-SHOP AND MANAGEMENT REPORT Proshop: Welcome back for another exciting year, I for one, is really looking forward to this season and have been since Golf Manitoba granted us the Manitoba Rural Men s Amateur Championship August 12 & 13. This will put our course on display to the top amateur golfers in the rural area of the province and we will do what we can as a staff to make it a guaranteed success. This tournament will do nothing but improve our reputation in the golf community, and it will change us from being the best kept secret in Manitoba, to one of, if not the best golf experiences in the province. New Products in the Proshop: Golf Club Lines I will be carrying Taylormade again. #1 Driver in Golf Taylormade RBZ driver is replacing the burner line, and it is the highest selling driver on the market. Taylormade drivers are being played more than Titleist, PING, Cobra and Callaway Combined. Demo s available in Drivers, fairway woods, rescue clubs and iron sets. We will again be continuing our reciprocal agreement with Minnedosa Golf and Country Club where our members can play at their course for a reduced fee; we should take more advantage of this agreement, as we are spoiled in having 2 great courses so close together. I look forward to seeing everybody this spring. I will be looking forward to helping everyone have a successful season. Thanks for your support Landon Cameron
Restaurant News: You may have heard I will be taking over management of the clubhouse. As per membership survey 2 seasons ago, it will be self serve, to cut back on staffing costs. The menu will be reduced but will still contain options for everyone. We will be having special meals and more service on ladies night and men s night. Any concerns or ideas for improvement please feel free to come talk to me. *******IMPORTANT******* Due to our liquor license, anyone bringing out a non member for drinks or lunch that is not using the golf course on that day must be signed in just like the Legion. There is a book by the entrance. We have been getting a hassle from the liquor inspector about this. GROUNDS REPORT Grounds Summary for Spring Newsletter 2012 Spring of 2012 has been a delight on the golf course. We started this year on the course approximately a month earlier than 2011, and the conditions are enabling the crew and me to continue improvements on the flood ridden areas of the course. Cart paths and bunkers have been the focus early in the year. Once soil temperatures and weather conditions present themselves favorable for seeding we will start seeding and over-seeding programs. Seeding the areas that are still suffering from flood damage caused in 2011 will be first, and then we will move to over-seeding into thin turfed areas of fairways. Currently we are working on charging the irrigation system, which usually has a number of irrigation leaks and breaks that come along with it. I d like to thank Bert dekoning at Tridekon for donating a new floating dock frame used for the irrigation intakes; it makes servicing and installing the intakes much safer and easier. This year the goal is to get the condition of the golf course back to its original state plus some. The crew and I are excited for another season and it s great to get a nice early start to the season. Kirby Ashcroft Golf Course Superintendent
