Bulletin No 34 President Peter Washington President s message Greetings, What an eye opener last week at Laverton P-12 College, and what's. Fantastic meal served up by the VET students. A tour of the kitchen did not fail to impress. Also talking were the 2 Science Experience students who, as verified by their parents, have been inspired by their experience, even trying down free tickets to the Aussie Open to attend. It is so great to see what our efforts do at ground level, and to see how a school in our area is making giant strides in educating our youth. During the tour, the Principal highlighted how our contribution to the Breakfast Club is benefiting local students. Great night, great food, great fellowship. Remember to Engage Rotary Change Lives, and keep Community in Focus. Cheers President Pete
Mitchell Atanasovski in Brazil!!! Sunday, 23 March 2014 Brazilian Soccer at Maracanã Stadium and More!! As things have started to die down (only a little) this blog may be a little shorter then the others. Still, there is a lot to talk about and going to the biggest stadium in Brazil is definitely something you will all enjoy hearing due to a big world wide futebol (soccer) event coming up. One thing I'd like to start with though is that people from Australia can tear each and every stadium down world wide when they go to any type of sporting event with the screaming, cheering and yelling. Being a Western Bulldogs supporter has given me this ability since the day I was born so I really fitted in quite comfortably with the futebol fanatics. Let me start from the beginning: At around 4:30pm a group of us met in the city square to go to Maracanã Stadium!! The game didn't start until 10:00pm as I do not live close to Rio. It is around a two and a half hour trip to Rio so we were all very excited, nervous and a little tired as the trip is a little long. I was so glad to be among a lot of passionate Flamengo supporters who would take this trip just to see there team play. I feel this same excitement every time I go to a victory game in Melbourne and this was a feeling I dearly missed in Australia. One of my friends in the van that we went in to the stadium with let me borrow one of his Flamengo Jerseys. I was very lucky that this jersey had my favorite player's number on the back. His nickname is Brocador (power drill) and the reason behind him being my favorite player is quite funny. During my first week people were telling me to go for Flamengo as they are the best and will win everything (die hard supporter talk) around the dinner table. In the background of all this I could hear this power drill that had being going on non stop all day and I was trying to ask my family why?? No one understood, so I translated it in my phone and said it in Portuguese which was "brocador". As I said that my sister said told me that this one of the Brazilian players Hernane who plays for Flamengo, but all I was asking was what had been happening outside all day?? Anyway, Brocador became my favorite player so I was very excited to see him up close against one of the best teams in South America. It was a very competitive game and Bolivar were a very strong competitor. A massive amount of people attended as it was a Copa Libertadores da America game which is in a different league outside of Brazil. Unfortunately Flamengo and Bolivar tied 2-2. At this point I knew it would be a long trip back as anything less then a win was not good enough from me and the die hard Friburgo supporters who had traveled all this way to see them play. I ended up getting home at 3:30am so I definitely wasn't going to school the next day. On Friday at training the coach of the basketball team showed me the uniform they had made for me. It had my favorite number on it and "M. Atanasovski" Written on the back. I couldn't be more proud to represent my city with this uniform and my family with my name written on the back. Unfortunately the coach got everyone's uniform XXL so he's getting it mended for me. Hopefully it will be ready for our big
game this Saturday against Flamengo who is the best in Brazil at basketball. This game will also be played in Rio which is very exciting. Flamengo is the major club in Rio that has basketball, futebol and volleyball and are known to be a very good club with the amount of training they do. This game has been cancelled for the last two weeks due to there other commitments so I'm hoping we will play them this week. Last Monday, me and two other exchange students living in my city went on a hike to one of the mountains in my area. These two are really nice and both go to my school. They have helped me to get to know the school quite well and introduced me to a few people as they have already been here for around 6 months. Nova Friburgo has many mountains and is known to have beautiful tracks, rivers and a few waterfalls. Most people think that i'm in Rio and it should be hot all the time but its not. It has very similar weather to Melbourne and a quote used by the locals here is that it will "be hot one minute and rain the next". I know this quote too well in Australia. I had a great time chatting with the two girls on the long trip. One is from America and the other from Germany who has her mother here to see her for a few weeks. It was great to just talk about everything with them and know that we all have similar feelings because we have all experienced it sometime in our exchange. It's good to be able to network with these type of people who have similar interests in travel. But it also gives a little bit of patriotism as I love to share how exciting and cool Australia is to many of the locals and other exchange students. I will definitely like to visit these friends one day in their mother countries because its a good excuse for me to travel and experience more of the world!! Tuesday last week I arrived to school like every other student. Walking up the same giant hill and sitting in the same tiny chairs and tables. But there was one thing a little different. As I sat down my good friend Pedro told me to go up and look at my name on the role at the front of the room. I had a look and it said "Mirtiz" and in brackets "intercambio (international)". This turned a regular day into a very funny day. My friends were calling me by this name and I could only laugh it off because I could see the confusion with the teachers when I say my name is Mitch. I actually realized this last week when one of the guys that greets me every morning called me Mirtiz so i'm pretty sure he wrote my name like that hahaha. The benefit from this is that I have officially become a Brazilian because of my new name. I'm just going to have to find an alternative last name now other then "intercambio". This whole adventure has been a giant ride and I am looking forward to go to Lollapalooza in two weeks with my host sister who lives in Sao Paulo. She is the same girl I started my exchange with 8 weeks ago when her family picked me up to stay with them for one day when going to Rio. Its awesome how I've managed to keep in contact with these people and having networks in different places in Brazil is perfect when something comes up. Hopefully I will have a lot more for you next time!! Tschau!
