Newsletter of Hertfordshire Schools Badminton Association October 2016 Welcome to the first edition of on the line for the 2016/17 season may I welcome all squad members and their parents to Hertfordshire Schools Badminton Association. One of the first things I would like to do is to say on behalf of the HSBA committee a very big thank you to John Stobo for producing the newsletter over the years, a lot of hard work and dedication goes into producing and distributing this newsletter to all relevant parties. There are a number of items to follow that I wish to bring to your attention, especially those who have joined the county squad for the first time, these include a list of HSBA & Badminton England tournaments that will be taking place during the coming months and the respective age groups which are very confusing this year due to BE s decision to bring us into line with the rest of the world, please try to enter as many as you can for your age group and above. Badminton England Age Groups, 2016/17 The 2016-17 season domestic competition will run from 1 July 2016-30 June 2017. Your age group will be determined by your age on the 31 December 2017. HSBA Tournaments 9th October 2016 Barbara Lewczynska The first HSBA tournament of the 16/17 season saw Stevenage buzzing with activity. As well as the five U18 events, we also hosted the U15 B singles competition, which is aimed primarily at school and club played as county players are not eligible to enter. Twenty seven entries for the U18 singles meant the competition was tough. There were four boxes in the Boys section and each was extremely tightly contested. In the main event semi-final Daniel Davey (North Herts College) beat Jason Haley (John Henry Newman) in a tight 21-19 to proceed to the final, and in the other Zach Daniels (John Warner) overcame Stephen Elliot (John Henry Newman). The final was equally close and extremely exiting, it could have gone either way, but in the end Zach prevailed over Daniel to claim the 2016/2017 champions title. The plate event gave us another exiting final, and equally as close, with Cameron Bannister (Ashlyn s) narrowly beating Nathan Wooster (Verulam) 21-18. The Girls competition was a much smaller affair, but boosted by a hardy bunch of Queenwood girls who gave a very pink flavour to the mix. There were two boxes for this event, and in the main event semi Molly Goode (Presdales) came through beating Amelia Dixon (Mount Grace), and in the other semi Abbie Smith (Hemel Hempstead) reached the final with victory over Olivia Clark (Freman College). In the final Abbie beat Molly, this added to her hat trick of three titles from last season (U15 Singles, Doubles and Mixed). The plate competition mainly consisted of the Queenswood girls, who had a great deal of fun playing one another, but in the end it was Monique Maisey (Monks Walk) who won against Gretchen Kwong (Queenswood) 21-13. The Boys doubles had two boxes. In the main event final, Daniel avenged his defeat in the singles by winning with partner Cameron 21-18 against Stephen and Zach, and in the Plate event Brendan Ho (Verulam) and Kyle Hoyt (Sandringham) a lastminute.com partnership, beat Max Titterton (Hitchin Boys) and Nathan Wooster. The Girls doubles was one box of five played in a round robin format where Abbie Smith collected her second trophy of the day (with Molly) by winning all the matches in the box. Mention must also be made of the two Queenswood pairs who had a tough competition, but who smiled all the way through. The U15 B singles was also played during the day and it was good to see local clubs supporting this event, which is always of high quality. In the boy s event, which also had main and plate sections Ethan Barnes (Highfield) beat Adam Tutt (St Georges) in the main final, and Krystof Cerha (Marriott s) beat Scott Moring (Parmiters) in the final of the plate. The girls section which started at 12pm had one box of five, the majority of whom were from Queenswood. Lillie Corke (Mount Grace) ran out the eventual winner, beating all comers with Jemima Bisseker (Queenswood (runner up) and Jun Jaturanpinyo (Queenswood) third. The last event of the day, the U18 Mixed had one box of six (a perfect number as all three pairs can be on court simultaneously), and we were very mean at the desk as there was not a huge amount of resting time between games, and the mums and dads were insistent that we got through the matches as quickly as possible (I think they all wanted to go home). There were six very high quality pairs in the event, and the competition was hard going, but it was Zach and Molly who ran out the eventual winners, with Daniel and Abbie runners up, and Jason and Olivia in third place. Well done to all the player s organisers and parents on the day and many thanks to Ken for keeping us hydrated at the desk with his well-timed cups of tea. Page 3
