Satellite Explanation What is a Satellite Session: This session is the first step from Club level onto the National Talent Pathway Selection from the Satellite sessions to move forward to the Regional Academy to represent North East at the Regional Academy Competitions Selection for the National Academy and ultimately the National Squads will take place at these Regional Academy competitions Key Objectives: To increase the performance of Sedgefield WPC athletes within the National Talent Pathway, demonstrating an increase in representation and results at Regional, National and International level Philosophy - Build the competitive base 1,2 Further development of water polo specific skills Introduce more advanced water polo skills and tactics Consolidate and refine basic practical tactical and technical knowledge Develop decision-making abilities under pressure situations with and without ball Introduce game planning Cross Reference ASA Long Term Player Development (LTPD): 1. Training Calendar Training at Sedgefield WPC will be conducted on alternate Fri evenings (2000-2130) Training calendar will be published on http://sedgefieldwaterpolo.com Each session will last 1.5hrs It is anticipated that Sedgefield WPC could provide a maximum of 21 sessions and 3 test sessions throughout 2017. This will reduce depending on dates for competitions, holidays and pool closures Training will be carried out in blocks. A block will consist of 6 sessions with a Test session at the end The layout of the training will follow the Tactical Coach Approach provided in the ASA Water Polo Coach Development Programme

Training Cycle A block will consist of 6 sessions with a Test session at the end. The 6 sessions in a block will break out as follows: 1. Counter Attack 2. Counter Defence 3. 6v6 Offence 4. 6v6 Defence 5. 6v5 Offence 6. 5v6 Defence 7. Test Week

Technical Skills: At this stage, greater emphasis will be placed on developing and perfecting the basic skills. At the same time, developing advanced skills and introducing specific and positional skills is imperative. Club Level Testing: The following is the testing criteria that will be conducted every 7th week of the cycle: Note - The 400m swim will not be conducted more than once throughout the whole cycle Test 1 Fitness: Water Polo Intermittent Shuttle Test (WIST) is a water polo specific fitness test, created by Iñigo Mujika, to assess a player's ability to perform repeated high-intensity efforts interspersed with brief periods of active recovery. Test is repeated 7.5m shuttles, reducing in time, between two lane ropes with 10 sec active recovery. Test 2 Explosive Strength: To test specific explosive strength (power) a 30 sec Cross Bar Jump test will be performed. For this test, the players will start from the fundamental floating position with their heads and shoulders above the water, and they will repeatedly jump out of the water and touch the cross bar of a regulationsize water polo goal, with both hands, aiming to achieve as many jumps as possible in 30 seconds Test 3 Shooting: Shooting accuracy will be assessed via the number of successfully made shots that score in the designated area of the goal. Player will sprint 10m head down Front Crawl (FC) receive ball and target area. Sprint to 5m line, kick up, and shoot. Player has 30 secs to swim back to start again. Repeat 10 times Test 4 Tread Water: Vertical 30 secs arms vertical, elbows locked, holding ball, eggbeater- high & wide knees, feet turned out Test 5 Passing Accuracy: While treading water throw ball against wall and catch when it comes back, 10 attempts, note number of successful dry catches

Regional Academy Testing: The following is the suggested entry testing criteria for a Regional Academy: To progress on the Talent Pathway players will need to be able to demonstrate the following: There will be no minimum score for consideration at entry level. 20 points is maximum score. 10 points is a suggested base line but should not be used exclusively to individuals for entry. Coaches need to use intuition if there are border line cases. Ultimately coaches have discretion to select according to their judgement of an individual s potential e.g. If individuals excel in swimming and has potential to easily pick up points on others tests. Swim:400m timed swim FC push off from side no dives, using wall to turn and push off NB. test stops on 6mins 20 secs a. 4 points time = under 5m 20 secs b. 3 points time = under 5m 40 secs c. 2 points time = under 6m 00 secs d. 1 point time = under 6m 20secs Tread water: Vertical 30 secs arms vertical, elbows locked, holding ball, eggbeater- high & wide knees, feet turned out a. 4 points = arm pits consistently clear of water b. 3 points = armpits clear of water majority of time c. 2 points = shoulders clear + eggbeater d. 1 point = chin on water

Regional Academy Testing (cont d): Ball skills:30 secs In pairs passing 3m apart (goal width) a. 4 points = Dry Flat passes, elbow consistently high above ear, eggbeater, high & wide knees, feet turned out b. 3 points = Dry passes, occasionally flat, elbow occasionally high, eggbeater c. 2 points = any one of above absent d. 1 point = inconsistent, wet passes poor or no eggbeater, dropped catches (this test can be repeated with different players on different scores during sessions) Core strength (Dry land) Plank - Body straight line, head heels, forearms on the ground. Squeeze glutes and tighten abdominals. Hold position a. 4 points = 60secs + b. 3 points = 60 secs c. 2 points = 45secs d. 1 point = 30secs Press Ups: Hands level with & slightly wider than shoulder. Body in a straight line, head - heels. Chest 2 or 50mm from floor or arms bent 90 degree on descent, arms straight on ascent a. 4 points = 25+ b. 3 points = 20+ c. 2 points = 15+ d. 1 point = 10+
