Regional Institute Location Detroit Michigan The Mid-West was chosen as the location for the Inaugural Regional Institute due to the high demand for technical assistance in Organization Conversion. The Regional Institute will move to the West Coast in 2017 and the East Coast in 2018. Why Detroit? A once-booming economy, thanks to the automobile & shipping industries, Detroit fell into a deep depression in the 1970s and 1980s. Crime and gang activity escalated at an alarming rate, and the number of jobs in the city dropped tremendously. However, today Detroit is a city going through a major transformation-the economy is back on the rise, it is a mecca of small business start-ups, art and culture. The transformation of Detroit is very similar to the transformation going on today in Supported Employment. EmploymentFirst is making waves throughout the Nation--the idea that people with disabilities should be employed in the community as the first and preferred service option-is a catalyst for many business model changes. MGM Grand-Downtown Detroit The MGM Grand is a great location for the Inaugural Regional Institute-From Workshops to Workplaces Achieving the Goal of Employment First. With a commitment to employing thousands, a variety of amenities including a spa, four restaurants & a casino-this hotel is located in Downtown Detroit-a great backdrop for many organizations and attendees to start and/or continue to make their transformation!
