Our Expectations We expect our members and their families to behave in a reasonable, respectable and sociable way towards their peers, our coaching staff and other members. We also expect all members to train, play and support within the Spirit of Cricket (http://www.lords.org/laws-and-spirit/spirit/) When joining Salfords Cricket Club we expect members to sign up to, and behave within, the Code of Conduct Guideline (included in this document) and the club rules. Each new player for will be provided a cricket shirt (subject to a donation from the player). As part of the club s sponsorship deal we expect all players to wear this shirt for all games. Captains will enforce this policy not just to meet the sponsor s requirements but more importantly to show the club in a united identity. All Players when selected are expected to turn up at least 45 minutes prior to the start of the game for home matches. All players are required to help with the activities required to prepare for the game, during the game and after the game (for example, setting out chairs for spectators and putting them away). The captain will make sure each player is allocated tasks - if you are not sure what is expected of you then please speak to the captain on the day. Throughout the season each team member will be asked to make the cricket tea for a particular match. Please let the captains know which games you would like to undertake this for. Again, if you are not sure what to do, please speak to one of the captains. The social aspect to our club is very important to us and we encourage players and their family to attend events and spend time at the club after the game. The bar is open during and after games (and profits from the bar are an important contribution to club funds!) There are a range of social activities held throughout the year to raise money for club funds, check the website or club newsletter for details. Team Selection Policy Players are expected to register their availability via the club website (http://salfordscc.co.uk) (register on the website as a member then click AVAILABILITY at the top). If your availability changes after you have filled in the website please notify the captain immediately so that they are aware when making team selection. Team selection is undertaken by the captains on Tuesday evening after practice and players will be generally informed of selection by Wednesday evening, although you may occasionally be notified on a Thursday. The captains may inform you regarding selection face to face or by text or email. Players must acknowledge selection if notification is received via text or email. For league teams selection is usually based on form, ability and availability. In the unlikely event that there are not enough players to fulfil both Saturday teams the club will always fulfil the 1 st XI fixture. The Sunday Captain will always try and ensure players have at least one game of cricket over the weekend, so will always give priority on Sunday to players who are not playing on Saturday. On the odd occasion that there are surplus players on either day, the captains will select players based upon whether the player has paid their annual membership subscription, as well as how many games that weekend they are due to play and the requirements for the league teams. If a player misses out on playing cricket then every effort is made to ensure that player is playing cricket the following week. The captains are responsible for selection and their decision is final. Every effort will be made to explain to the players of selection decisions, but we hope each player understands the decision and accepts the decision of their respective captain. Spirit of Cricket Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit Of The Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with the captains. There are two Laws which place responsibility for the team's conduct firmly on the captain. RESPONSIBILITTY OF CAPTAINS The captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the Laws. PLAYERS CONDUCT In the event of a player failing to comply with instructions by an umpire, or by criticising by word or by action the decision of an umpire, or showing dissent, or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into dispute, the umpire concerned shall in the first place report the matter to the other umpire and the player's captain, and instruct the latter to take action. FAIR AND UNFAIR PLAY According to the Laws the umpires are the sole judges of fair and unfair play. The umpires may intervene at any time and it is the responsibility of the captain to take action where required. THE UMPIRES ARE AUTHORISED TO INTERVENE IN CASES OF; - Time wasting - Damaging the pitch - Dangerous or unfair bowling - Tampering with the ball - Any other action they consider to be unfair THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME INVOLVES RESPECT FOR; - Your opponents - Your own captain - The roles of the umpires - The game's traditional values Salfords Cricket Club Page 8
IT IS AGAINST THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME; VIOLENCE - To dispute an umpire's decision by word, action or gesture - To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire - To indulge in cheating or sharp practice, eg; (a) to appeal knowing the batsman is not out (b) to advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing (c) to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one s own side There is no place for any act of violence on the field of play. PLAYERS Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket match. Each player is expected to make an important contribution towards this. Salfords Cricket Club Committee will ensure that the cricket played in a safe, competitive, fair and sporting manner. The Committee have the powers to punish offending individuals who do not abide by this code of conduct. Transgressions in the following categories will be addressed by the Committee:- Players Failing to comply with the instructions of an umpire, criticising his decision by word or action, showing dissent, using abusive language, or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the Game and/or name of Salfords CC into disrepute. Accumulated Bad Behaviour Repeated infringements by an individual of the Spirit of the Game (Where it is decided that each infringement in itself does not merit any immediate disciplinary action). Repeated infringements by a team are likely to result in the captain being held responsible for the conduct of his team (whether or not individual players are also identified for disciplinary action). When issuing the penalty the Committee may take into account any previous instances of previous indiscipline, particularly where the on the field captain is the same. Captains must understand their responsibility for on the field behaviour of themselves and also their team members. Violence There is no place for any act of violence on the field of play or at any other time. Proven cases of violent conduct will result in immediate expulsion from the club. Racial Abuse Players and team officials must not make any racially abusive comments or indulge in racially abusive actions against fellow players, members and supporters.
