2014 Season Outlook University of Pittsburgh softball head coach Holly Aprile will begin her seventh season as head coach (12th with the program) with some new additions to the team. The Panthers welcome six new faces to the squad, while returning 13 letter-winners. The roster consists of six seniors, seven juniors, three sophomores, and four freshmen who hope to see competition in 2015. The team will enter its second season in the Atlantic Coast Conference after finishing 15-29 overall, and 6-18 in its inaugural season in the ACC. A few players received conference honors for their performances throughout the season including infielder Maggie Sevilla, who was named ACC Player of the Week during the 2014 campaign, and outfielder Carly Thea who was an All- ACC Conference Second Team performer. We are really looking forward to our second season in the ACC, said coach Aprile. The conference is highly competitive from top to bottom and we look forward to those challenges every weekend. RETURNING RANKS We have an experienced and mature group this year and they know that they will need to be both physically and mentally prepared for a battle every weekend, said Aprile. SENIORS Outfielder Carly Thea is among the impact players returning to the field for the Panthers this season. Thea was named to the NFCA All Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team, becoming the first Panther to receive All-Region honors. Starting all 44 games during the 2014 season, her.388 batting average led the team and ranked sixth in the ACC. Thea also hit a career-high seven home runs for the Panthers. Returning to the mound this season will be Savannah King and Alexa Larkin. King made 25 starts in the circle and led the team with 167.0 innings pitched last year. Larkin pitched in 32 games for Pitt in 2014, earning seven wins and a save. Infielder Carissa Throckmorton is also on the list of senior Panthers returning this season. She tallied 30 hits with a.377 slugging percentage and recorded 11 extra-base hits, good for third-most on the team. Other returning seniors include infielder Kaila Balatgek and outfielder Jordan Fannin who both contributed to the starting lineups in 2014. JUNIORS Leading the seven juniors will be returning starter Maggie Sevilla, whose three home runs and nine RBI s in four games earned her ACC Player of the Week late March of last season. Sevilla led the Panthers in homeruns (9) and RBI (30). Other junior starters include catcher Kathryn Duran and outfielder Ashlee Sills. Duran posted a.996 field percentage with only one error in 225 chances behind the plate and led the team with a total of 206 putouts. Sills logged a career-high 21 hits with a.259 average. Ohio State transfer Shelby Pickett is expected to make a major impact this season as she returns from injury after transferring from Ohio State. During her time as a Buckeye, Pickett started 39 games and had a.303 batting average with 37 hits. She had 138 putouts behind the plate while carryinhg a.956 fielding percentage. Jenna Modic, a transfer from Miami University of Ohio, is also likely to make an appearance for the Panthers for the first time this season. Other returners include infielder Carmelena Moffa and outfielder Morgan Choe. SOPHOMORES Rounding out the returning starters for Pitt is infielder Kaitlin Manuel. Vartabedian Field - Petersen Sports Complex Vartabedian Field at the Petersen Sports Complex is the home for Pitt Panthers softball. Opened in 2011, The Petersen Sports Complex is built on 12 acres at the peak of Pitt s upper campus, and provides state-of-the-art homes for the Panthers baseball, softball and men s and women s soccer teams. The Petersen Sports Complex not only gives Pitt student-athletes nationally competitive facilities, but it also rejuvenates a previously untapped area of land that neighbors the University of Pittsburgh campus. Combined with the premier venues of Heinz Field, the Petersen Events Center, the UPMC Sports Performance Complex, and the newly renovated Fitzgerald Field House and Trees Pool, the Petersen Sports Complex offers students, parents and fans an enthralling sports experience that stretches from Oakland to the North Shore to the booming South Side. Softball has a skinned infield with an artificial grass outfield, along with lighting. The stadium includes team dugouts, hitting and pitching practice areas and a press box.
