MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings, Southwestern Association members and athletes! I have been a member of the Southwestern Association for over 35 years. During that timeframe, I have held positions as the Chairman of Masters track, Vice President, and President. One of my greatest achievements was developing the Masters program from having no track meets to holding the Annual Southwestern Association Masters Championships, which is well attended every year. My goals as President are to grow the association, which means to expand our programs and active members. It is necessary to reach everyone that is interested in running and race walking, and provide them with opportunities to compete. We also need to attract more members willing to work with the association to be able to provide quality services. In addition, it is my vision to see that the association provides service to members living outside the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, not just those that live near Dallas and Fort Worth. To conclude, I encourage the association to not just cater to one or two groups of members. We must provide a service to everyone, and help them expand their members. Lester Mount, President 2

The key for the success of this association in my effort to assist, is to grow the membership and close the gap between the National office and athletes, and the grass roots/youth, novice athlete, or the promising Olympian to be able to compete and have the path guided by success while being able to obtain the insight by either talking to a National coach or even understanding the process of getting to the IAAF status of competition. Once again, USATF (USA track's governing body) wisely called on former Olympic gold medal sprinter and relay specialist, Jon Drummond, GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS, to specifically focus on the relays. A team-first mentality, good chemistry, utilizing natural individual strengths (to run the curve or the straight, good starter, good finisher) and a consistent exchange technique were the foundation blocks of Drummond's philosophy in creating success! Southwestern s Aldrich Bailey, The youngest men's 400m runner in the 2012 US Olympic Trials. All eyes were on LaShawn Merritt in heat 1 of the men's 400 meters yesterday so few people noticed the tall smooth-striding youngster in lane 8 who slipped into third place in 45.59 to qualify for the semi-finals. The eighteen year old (b. 2/6/94) from Timberview H.S, Arlington, Texas *DALLAS GOLD TRACK CLUB, has made his mark on High School 400m running, and is the 6th fastest HS runner ever with a mark of 45.19, a national HS record. Bailey is the National Junior 400m Champion, and will be attending Texas A&M on scholarship. With windy 10.46 and 20.49, Bailey is too tall for the short sprints, and a natural for the 400m. His range of times in finals for last season was an impressive 45.19 to 47.57. Watch Aldrich Bailey in future Olympic trials and US Champs. Will he be the next Wariner or Merritt? 12

JON DRUMMOND, DARVIS PATTON & OTHERS HONORED BY FORT WORTH CITY COUNCIL MAYOR S OFFICE GREETINGS! The City of Fort Worth and USA Track & Field would like to formally invite you to a special ceremony to recognize the 2012 Team USA Olympic track and field relay coach Jon Drummond. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, October 16 at 10:00AM located at Fort Worth City Hall. As a member of a medal-winning relay squad, each athlete was instrumental in helping Team USA reach 29 medals in London by securing either gold or silver in each of the men s and women s relay competitions. Along the way, Team USA recorded both a world record (women s 4x100m) and an American record (men s 4x100m), while recording gold and silver in each event, respectively. Drummond also guided the women s 4x400m to a gold medal and the men s 4x400m to a silver medal. The City of Fort Worth would greatly appreciate your presence at this special event honoring Coach Drummond. Sincerely, Betsy Price Mayor, City of Fort Worth 13

OLYMPIAN AND FORT WORTH, TEXAS NATIVE, KHADEVIS ROBINSON, ACCEPTS COACHING POSITION AND SENDS BEST WISHES. Best regards, Khadevis Robinson "Awaken Your Olympian Within" Khadevis Robinson President-TFAA 8-TIME USA National Champion 800m/Olympian Hello everyone, it is such an honor to be invited to this event (Fort Worth City Council Recognition Ceremony). Unfortunately, I will not be able to make I due to the fact I recently accepted the Head Cross Country coaching position at The Ohio State University. This being the case, we will be away competing during that time. I will like to congratulate Jon Drummond and send my support to everyone involved in this event. Being from Fort Worth, attending Carroll Peak Elementary, Morningside Middle, and Trimble Technical High School, and having made two Olympic teams, I feel it is great that we continue to show positive influences in our city. Please keep me informed on any other such events. 14

2012 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 26 July 1, 2012 Maverick Stadium, University of Texas Arlington, Arlington, TX 1. You wear several hats within the association. What are your duties and how do you manage to do so much? Indeed, I do have many hats, however, one does not encompass the other. I am able to separate them effectively. One of the positions I have is as secretary, it helps with the communication process with other associations, however, more than anything else this position helps with the communication within our own association. In my position as Youth Chair, I can form a relationship with all of the athletes and coaches whether they are in clubs or unattached. I actually get to know the athletes - one because their names come across so often I make it my business to bond with the athlete and coach. As Regional XII Coordinator, I am appointed by the National Youth Chair to perform to his whim, which means I am an extension of him and his works. I am in a leadership position and it is my responsibility by way of the National Chair to bring all four associations in Region XII together to work as a whole. As South Vice Zone Rep, I represent the South Zone in the absence of the South Zone Rep and will represent the entire South end of the country as well as the East Coast at the table of the National Executive Committee. 2. How has the youth program changed or improved over the years? We are still a work in progress and striving for perfection. We are not there, however, it is a constant work. It has changed and grown during my tenure. I have had great role models and have been able to build on what they gave me and as I stated being able to work with people from around the country to do a better job by asking questions and learning best practices to incorporate into our programs. (continued on page 14) 16

Toni Nichols continued 3. What championship meets has the association held in the last two years? In the last two years, we have held Association Championships in 2010 at Eagle Stadium at DeSoto HS in DeSoto, TX and in 2011 at Bobcat Stadium in Hallsville, TX. We hosted the Region XII T & F Championships back to back, in 2010 at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, TX and in 2011 at the University of Texas at Arlington in Arlington, TX. We hosted the 2010 Association XC Championships at Myers Park in Rockwall and we will host the 2011 Association XC Championships at Trinity Park & Club. 4. What do you benefit most from attending the USATF Annual Meeting each year? Knowledge first and bonding. We go there to learn about best practices, pass along information so that all of us can do a better job in the positions we hold. I look forward to this each year in a good way because each time I am learning more. 2012 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships July 23 29, 2012 Hughes Stadium, Morgan State University Baltimore, MD 5. What is your outlook on the season? I see great things happening to the youth program in the upcoming season, such as we will host the National Youth Outdoor Meet at UTA. As stated previously, we look forward to this being one of the best meets in the country just by attendance alone. We have a great number of athletes in Region XII, one of the largest in the country, therefore, we look forward to even greater when including the rest of the country. I am so honored by our Association in terms of working to helping me to host such a great meet. None of this could be done without the support of entire association. In 2004, USATF and Team USA athletes initiated an outreach program that was aimed at educating youth, parents, educators, and coaches about the positive results that come from leading a physically active, drug-free lifestyle while living with integrity. Track and Field champions from every discipline visited schools and community centers all over the country to work directly with young people. Since then, the Win With Integrity program has evolved from a start-up program into one of USA Track & Field's most successful initiatives.
