Mayflyer Donegal Trout Unlimited April 2013 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The calendar says spring but I m not so sure. Last March at this time the spring flowers were in bloom and some of the mayfly hatches were well underway, but last year was very unusual. Mother Nature has a way of balancing things out. At this writing, last minute preparations are being made for our annual spring banquet at the Host Resort on April 6th. It is shaping up very well with a tremendous number of donations. We are expecting a record turnout and this could easily be our best year ever. Faye Haering is also busy getting ready for her 2nd annual Ladies Conservation Breakfast to be held at Millport on April 13th. She is also organizing a women s fly fishing clinic to be held at Hugh Wengers farm on June 22nd. With enough interest, this could also be an annual event. We also hope to host a Big Brothers & Sister event as well as a Special Olympics fishing derby later this year. The dates have not yet been picked. The details should be forthcoming and Faye will be looking for volunteers. Both of these events are a lot of fun and very gratifying. Another very important event coming up is the Annual Youth Field Day to be held at the Northern Lancaster County Sportsman s Club on June 1st. The kids participate in a number of activities including bass fishing, skeet shooting, rifle shooting, archery, and many other sports. Kevin Fausey is chairing our part of the event and is looking for volunteers to help demonstrate basic fly casting. It is a fun day and you get to meet a lot of very enthusiastic youngsters. More details will be coming soon, so please mark the date and plan to come out. You ll be glad you did. Jim Wellendorf has received 3 applications for this year s Rivers Camp at Allenberry on the Yellow Breeches. We are very pleased at this year s response. This is a wonderful opportunity for boys or girls from 14 to 17 years of age. I can t say enough about how much the kids enjoy it. They learn a lot about cold water conservation, stream entomology, and a variety of other related subjects, including fly fishing. Registration is now closed for this year, but please As some of you know, DTU received a Growing Greener Grant for $216,000 to be used for 5 new projects on the Conowingo watershed. Permitting is in place and hopefully, work will start sometime in June. Due to some winter rain events, we still have some repair work to do on several other sites on the Conowingo. Work is also slated to begin on Charles Run and Fishing Creek later this year. There are some new projects being considered on Fishing Creek, both upstream and downstream from Valley Lee Riding Club. The landowner on the upstream section would like to make the property a handicapped-only fishing area. Unfortunately, with that restriction, we can only get limited support from PA Fish & Boat. We will have to see how that works out. The amount of work still to be done on Lancaster County streams is seemingly endless. In the ever-changing political and economic climate, we can only hope that the federal and state support continues. I want to thank you all for your great support at our membership meetings. Attendance has nearly doubled since last year. Our V.P. and Communications Chair, Jim Wellendorf, has done a wonderful job of getting the info out to the members, and you have responded. Let s keep it up. It s really good to see you all there. The April 17th meeting features Mark Snody speaking about fishing Clarks Creek. I think most of us are familiar with the stream and know how tough it can be. I m sure we can all use a few tips. May brings us a feature about small stream fishing from the Adirondacks to Skyline Drive. So mark the dates, come on out, and enjoy the show. See you there! Corner Voluntee r What s Emerging keep this in mind for the future. This is an event DTU firmly supports. TOM Badges for fishing Millport Conservancy in 2013 are now available. Purchase them at a meeting for $20 or contact me for mailing instructions, at a cost of $22.50 including postage. Check or money order only. Please include tel # and membership info. Current members of Donegal TU or Millport Conservancy only. Contact Faye Haering at fayeonthefly@comcast.net or 285-2572. Committee Reports PROGRAMS APRIL April 17 at the Farm & Home Center 7 pm Mike Snody will share his skills for catching trout on Clark s Creek near Harrisburg. Mike has spent many years fishing Clark s and is arguably one of the resident experts. One of his flies was used in a One Fly contest out West and earned its fisherman second place after catching 38 trout. This will be an ideal presentation for those of you interested in learning how to fish Clark s. MAY May 15 at the Farm & Home Center - 7 pm Craig Hull of Troutgetter Flies & Guide Service will speak to us about small stream fishing for trout from the Adirondacks to Skyline Drive. In addition, he ll be bringing his hand-tied selection of flies, which members may purchase at the very low rate of $10/dozen (a few large streamer patterns may be more expensive). All monies raised through this offer will be deducted from his speaking fee, so it s win/win. Sure to be an interesting evening. JUNE On June 19 th we ll welcome the start of Summer with our first picnic of the year at Millport Conservancy. Note this meeting will begin at our earlier summer meeting time of 6 pm. CONSERVATION COMMITTEE CONOWINGO CREEK WAYNE BOGGS PROGRAM CHAIRMAN PRO TEMP We received good news on February 20 th that DTU was awarded a Growing Greener Grant for a total of $216,000. This money will be used to fund design & permitting on 5 new projects within the Conowingo Creek Watershed. We will be using Rettew Associates to accomplish these tasks and they should be able to start next month. Once the surveying and designs are finished, Rettew will then apply for the required permits. In the meantime, we will apply for an addendum to cover the construction cost of the projects. Three of the projects will be on Amish farms. FISHING CREEK We are planning to work on another site of the Gary Landis farm along Scalpy Hollow Road this year. This will be a joint effort between DTU, the PA Fish & Boat Commission s Habitat Division and Friends of Fishing Creek Watershed Association. We recently received a $500 check from Friends of Fishing Creek to help cover the construction costs on the Landis Farm. We appreciate their support. CHARLES RUN We hope to complete the project on Charles Run this Spring. As you recall, the project had to be postponed due to wet conditions last Fall. I will post more information on a possible construction date in the near future. CLIMBERS RUN We completed the construction phase on the Menno Stoltzfus Farm with the help of the US Fish & Wildlife Service. We are very pleased to have such a good working relationship with them. They seeded & placed straw on the exposed areas in December, but the ground froze a few days later. We will have to reseed the area as well as plant trees along the graded banks. Also, they did some touch-up work on the Levi Esh farm due to some eroding from last year s flood. MAYFLYER On Saturday, April 13 th the chapter will host our second Ladies Coldwater Conservation Breakfast at the Millport Conservancy. Breakfast itself will be supplied by the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center as last year. Participants will be given a presentation on our efforts at stream conservation, then broken into groups to see a fly tying demonstration, take a tour of Millport & the Run, and get a brief introduction to fly casting. A rep from TCO fly shop will also be present. Ladies Corner As a followup to the Breakfast, this year we are proud to offer a Ladies' Fly Fishing Clinic. Dianne Tidy, member of Chesapeake Women Anglers and FFF Certified Guide-Instructor has offered her services to teach this Clinic which is to be held at the property and one acre pond of Dr. & Mrs. Hugh Wenger at 403 Trail Road North, Elizabethtown, Pa. 17022-8430 on June 22 nd.. BOB KUTZ CONSERVATION CHAIRMAN In order to have the Mayflyer in your hands in a timely manner, we are publishing this issue prior to the Banquet. However, a supplement to the April issue will be posted to the website midweek following the Banquet containing news of that event. A copy of the Banquet Booklet has been posted to the website if you d like a preview of the event. Furthermore, if you have not given your email address to TU national, perhaps because you don t want to become a lifetime member and receive a free rod & reel, would you please consider giving it to Wayne Boggs (troutwisperr@gmail.com), who maintains a private list of email addresses which are not shared with anyone else. Email is the most efficient and fastest way for us to communicate with you, our members. Wayne s list is not used for anything other than internal Donegal TU communications, and we would appreciate your considering adding your address to that list. MARK MCMASTER EDITOR We anticipate that a video presentation of casting techniques and description of rod/reel parts and functions will precede the casting lessons, followed Continued, page 8 3

March Meeting The Donegal Chapter of Trout Unlimited held its March membership meeting at 7 PM on Wednesday March 20, 2103 at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster, PA. The guest speaker was Mitch Blake who is the Region s Representative of Trout Unlimited for Marcellus Shale. Mitch made a very informative presentation about many aspects of the Marcellus Shale including the potential damages to the water supplies, water quality, vegetation, the environment and animals including trout. Mitch also told the members how they could become involved in stream monitoring. The audience, over 60 Chapter members, actively participated in the question and answer period. Everyone came away better informed about this significant issue. JIM WELLENDORF Fly Fishing Show The Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Show was held at the Lancaster Convention Center on March 2 and 3, 2103. This marks the second year in a row that the Fly Fishing Show was held in Lancaster. The show had something for everyone celebrities, outfitters, seminars, a film festival and vendors demonstrating and selling their products. It might be said, if you could not find it at the Show you didn t need it. Donegal Trout Unlimited had, as it did last year, a booth directly across from the Exhibition Hall entrance, a perfect place to meet and talk to perspective new members and friends. Wayne Boggs, Event Chairman, also said the location of the booth was ideal to solicit Banquet donations from the vendors. JIM WELLENDORF Volunteer Corner, continued (717-627-0419 gregsfish@gmail.com) if you can help. The booth set up and manned by the following group of volunteers: Wayne Boggs, Greg Wilson, Paul Zegley, Roy Drinkwater (from right to left in the picture), Faye Haering, Tom Hall, Bob Albright, Derek Ebely, Greg Mazzeo, Mark Ebner, Bill Jefferson and Dan Van Buskirk. Many thanks to all of them! Photos courtesy Jim Wellendorf Volunteers will be needed as stream guides for Fly on the Run on Thursday, May 16 starting at 7 AM. Volunteer Stream Guides will be invited to attend the banquet on Wed. May 15 th at LCCTC Mount Joy Campus. Contact Faye Haering if interested in helping. Volunteers will be needed on Saturday, June 1 st to help teach fly casting at the Lancaster County Sportsmen for Youth s Youth Field Day. This year s event will be held at the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association in Denver. Contact Kevin Fausey (kevin40@ptd.net) if you can help.

Lititz Run Cleanup Saturday March 16, 2013 was the Annual Lititz Run Cleanup and Tree Planting. It was hard to believe that Spring was only 4 days away as it was cold, damp, raw and snowing. However the weather did not stop a hardy group of volunteers from the Millport Conservancy, Elizabethtown College and Donegal Trout Unlimited from accomplishing their mission. Greg Wilson, Co-Chairperson, Conservation Projects led a group of DTU volunteers Joe Scholly, Matthew Weeks, Jamie Edwards, Bill Henry, Mark Sauder, Dale Ashcroft, Harold Alleman, Barry Sullivan, Nathaniel Good, Barry Good, Brent Good and several volunteers from the Gate House - who worked on cleaning the Run area on the Banta Farm. In addition they planted about 300 trees and shrubs which included silky dogwoods, willows and a few elderberry from DTU s nursery, at 4 different locations throughout the watershed. Garry Longenecker, Daniel Van Buskirk, Jim Bachman, one of our 2103 Rivers Camp students, Patrick Morrison, his mother and father worked on the stream area inside the Millport Conservancy. Now that the Stream is looking better, bring on Spring! JIM WELLENDORF Photos courtesy Jim Wellendorf & Greg Wilson

Tanglewood - Recent Work Ladies Corner, continued by fishing at the pond which has a sizeable catfish, bass and panfish population. There will also be instruction on leaders and knots and fly choices by Ken Tidy. Plans are to start this clinic at about 9:30 a.m. A complimentary lunch will be held in the picnic grove in a shaded area and a porta-pot will be available with hand wash facilities. Please bring a folding chair & water. Wear a hat, polarized sunglasses, insect repellent, sunscreen and appropriate clothing/footwear for the weather. If you have your own fly rod & equipment, please bring that along. We will provide rods for those that don t own their own. It doesn't get any better than this, so stay tuned.
