Page 5 Immunization requirements changing for 7th grade Georgia's immunization requirements have changed for children entering 7th grade and for students who are considered "new entrants" in grades 8-12. Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, these students will be required to have Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) and MCV (meningococcal conjugate) vaccines prior to entering school. A "new entrant" means any child entering a Georgia school for the first time or entering after having been absent for more than 12 months or one school year. Immunization requirements have not changed for children entering prekindergarten and kindergarten or for those already enrolled in a Georgia school for grades 1-6 and 8-12. Parents should plan to have their child vaccinated well in advance of the start of the 2014-2015 school year. Students will not be able to register or receive class schedules unless they submit proof of these vaccines. If you have questions, please contact your health care provider or the local health department. NEWS FROM THE CLINIC Please let us know if your child is diagnosed with an infectious disease, one that can be easily transmitted to others i.e. Strep Throat. The student will need a doctor s excuse note to return to school. In the event that there is more than one confirmed case of an infectious disease, the school will send a notification letter to parents that will inform them of signs and symptoms to look for. The best way to prevent the spread of infection is to remind our children to wash their hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer. Remind them to w ash before and after eating, after using the bathroom, and after coming back from crowded places such as; school, the mall, the MARTA, dance, karate or gymnastics class, etc. As always, I am here to assist you with your child s health needs. Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. I can be reached at 770-667-2870 ext150 or Crandall@fultonschools.org.

Page 6 Online Summer Course Offerings for Rising 9 th Graders Fulton County high school counselors met last week to review course offerings for rising 9 th grade students (class of 2018). It was decided that three courses will be offered during the summer session, personal fitness, health and American Government. All are required courses for high school graduation. Students may register to take the above classes via Fulton Virtual School or Georgia Virtual School. The Fulton Virtual Health Class will provide students the necessary certificate to receive a Georgia driver s license permit. The links to the registration pages for both virtual schools are listed below. When completing the registration, please list Northwestern Middle school as the current school attended. The duration of the classes is 5 or 7 weeks in length depending on the virtual school a student selects. There is technical information provided on the GAVS site as well as a sample course demonstration. The technical requirements and course delivery format are very similar for Fulton Virtual as well. Registration for both virtual schools is currently open. Online summer course work provides students an opportunity to create room in their schedules to take additional electives during the traditional school year. It is recommended that a student not enroll in more than two of the three courses listed above. The average coursework for the classes listed above can range from 1 2 hours per day. The decision to enroll in these courses should thoughtful. There is little to no flexibility for late or missed assignments. Once a student completes the online summer courses, a roster will be submitted to Cambridge and Milton High Schools. At that time, additional electives will be entered for the student provided space is available. If you have any question regarding online summer registration, please contact Euodia Harris @ harrise1@fultonschools.org or 770-667-2870 ext. 131. PTSA LEGISLATIVE UPDATE Senate Bill 167 is a piece of Legislation currently up for debate that proposes to give greater power to our state and individual districts to determine what educational path our schools will take in the future. North Fulton School Board members, Katie Reeves and Linda McCain, visited the Georgia State Capital last week to find out more about this bill and how it might impact our county as well as the state. One issue of concern as expressed in North Fulton's recent community meetings has been the state's current integrated math model and many request a return to a traditional math course. Make up your own mind about Senate Bill 167 by visiting the Georgia General Assembly's website at www.legis.ga.gov/legislation/en-us/.../sb/167 Our legislators will more than likely vote on the bill over the course of the next week. There may be amendments added to the bill before the final vote is taken.

Page 10 The Cambridge High School PTSA is currently accepting nominations for the 2014 2015 PTSA Board. Our PTSA is critical to the success of our school and the relationship with our community. They support a variety of important programs that serve our students and staff, from clinic supplies to academic grants. If you would like to serve our students by being a part of the 2014 2015 PTSA Board, please contact Laura Bentley atrbent1@bellsouth.net.
