Talking Turkey The Pitt County Wildlife Club Newsletter June 2017 1 Welcome to the June edition of Talking Turkey. Please take a moment to read our newsletter and stay informed of the various events and opportunities awaiting you at the club this month. Membership Meeting 7:00 PM, Thursday, June 15 The June General Membership Meeting will be held at the clubhouse. Dinner will be served at 7:00 PM catered by Moore's Barbecue. The program will be our Semiannual Swap Meet. Field Notes...From Club President, Lee Grubb Hello and welcome to June. The weather is great and much fun is to be had on the ranges. Please make sure that you hydrate early and often to avoid any issues with the heat. We have several members who can provide you with firsthand accounts of the dangers of dehydration and overheating. Since it is June, I need to make an announcement about the upcoming elections. Yes, it's that time of year again. In the July Talking Turkey we will provide a slate of candidates for the PCWC Board. In addition to the spots on the Board, if you have interest in heading up our three gun activities then please contact me. At the July general membership meeting we will take nominations from the floor for different spots and then we will vote at the end of the summer. Additional voting information will follow. If you have any questions or if I can assist you in any way, please contact me at grubb3g@gmail.com and I will see you at the club. Work Day Work Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 17, 8:00 AM. Activities will include continued cleanup of the club grounds and structures in the wake of the destruction of Hurricane Matthew's subsequent flooding. Also we will have the usual changing of backer boards, picking up trash, emptying garbage cans, etc. This month s workday coordinator will be Louis Weaver. Board of Director Elections Our annual elections will be held at the August Membership Meeting. Candidates put forth by the Nominating Committee will be announced in the July Talking Turkey. Nominations from the floor will be taken during the July Membership Meeting. A valid ID (club badge or drivers license) will be required to vote so that we can match votes with our active membership list. Absentee ballots must be requested in writing to the Secretary of the Pitt county Wildlife club. Requests for absentee ballots must be received at least 21 days in advance of the August Election. To receive your absentee ballot, please mail your request to: Dan Martin, Secretary Pitt County Wildlife Club PO Box 101 Greenville, NC 27835 1

3-Gun Match at PCWC: The 3-Gun Match at the club has been suspended indefinitely for want of a Match Director. Anyone interested in taking over the event please contact Club President Lee Grubb at 252-367-1373. Combat Pistol Training Class On September 11-13 (Mon.-Wed.), 2017, between 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, the PCWC will host a Defensive Pistol Class for members only. Since many members cannot afford the cost of travel and classes at Gunsite, Thunder Ranch or Blackwater, we would like to offer one in-house for a nominal fee, as a service to our members. The class will be taught by Pitt County Sheriff's Office retired Captain Brady Davis and our own member, Jim Marsal. Both firearms instructors have numerous years of experience, teaching thousands of officers life-saving handgun skills. The class will cover the following topics and more: safety, ccw issues, draw/re-holstering, combat triad and winning mindset, gun handling, modifications, holster selection, reloading, shooting from cover, marksmanship fundamentals, shooting from various positions, shooting on the move, maintenance, nonstandard response, turning, ballistic testing and discussion. Obviously, members will need to be in physical shape good enough to stand for long periods of time, move from prone to kneeling to standing, as well as have basic gun handling skills prior to the class. This course is designed to take your skill set to the next level of performance and increase your confidence in your defensive shooting. This is not a beginners course, nor is it a USPSA improvement class. Members will need the following: a reliable defensive handgun (9mm/38 Special, or larger), 1,000 rounds of quality ammunition, 5 magazines or speed loaders, heavy belt, magazine carriers, appropriate clothing for weather, cleaning gear, eye/ear protection, billed hat and an open mind. Any questions on the class or suitable gear, please call or email Jim Marsal at marsal2424@hotmail.com, 252-3785184. Cost of the class will be $225.00. Payment in advance is accepted beginning January 15th. Class size is limited to the first 20, paid members. Sorry, but no refunds will be made so please make sure that you can attend when you reserve your spot. Checks should be made out to Jim Marsal and mailed to: Jim Marsal, 1897 Manor Court Greenville, N.C. 27858 Write 3-day Pistol Class on the memo line. Defensive Carbine Class On October 9-11 (Mon-Wed), 2017, Brady Davis and Jim Marsal will conduct a Defensive Carbine Class for club members. The class will cover the proper use, operation, maintenance, ballistics of the 5.56mm/300 AAC cartridges, zeroing, set-ups, for the AR15 rifle. Students will learn how to effectively use the AR15 rifle in a defensive situation, as well as transition to their handgun. Interested members will need the following: a reliable AR15 rifle, proper sling that easily allows transitions to the pistol, reliable pistol with holster, (5) magazines for each, 1,000 rounds of rifle and 250 rounds of pistol ammunition, with an open mind. This class will require students to be able to control and hold a rifle up, shoot, move, get into and out of various positions such as prone and kneeling, as well as be able to stand for long periods of time. This is an active class and members will need to be in physical shape to complete it. Though this training will help, it's not a USPSA/Multi-Gun improvement course. Due to the limited time available, members must have already completed one our Defensive Pistol Classes, or the equivalent pistol class at Gunsite, Thunder Ranch or Blackwater. Class space is limited to the first 20 members that pay the $225.00 tuition. Please contact Jim Marsal at marsal2424@hotmail.com or 252-378-5184, for registration, payment and for any questions on the specific training, equipment, or listed requirements. Checks should be made out to Jim Marsal and mailed to: Jim Marsal, 1897 Manor Court Greenville, N.C. 27858 Write "3-Day Carbine Class" on the memo line. 2 2

PCWC CONCEALED CARRY FORMAT SHOOT Concealed Carry Shoot will be Saturday, June 17, at 11:00 AM with set up. This will be a shooting event for members only (and their guests), and is designed to be enjoyable for shooters of all skill levels. Participation in the concealed carry shoot requires use of handguns, holsters, and other equipment suitable for concealed carry/self-defense. With that in mind, equipment is based on commonly available firearms and gear. This will allow individuals the opportunity to shoot with minimal expenditure, and get some time with equipment that they have chosen for defense of themselves and loved ones. Price: $10 (members), $15 (guests). For more information contact Bill Young at (252) 531-8962. Special Instruction for Beginning or New Shooters On the first Sunday of each month, beginning at 2:00 PM, special instruction for new shooters will be offered at the club. Bring your bagged, unloaded handgun to Range 4; if you do not have a handgun don't worry, we will furnish firearms. Please call Rick Brixon at (252) 752-1256 if you plan to attend. This is a free service open to the public. Please bring factory ammunition for whatever caliber firearm you are bringing or are interested in shooting. Usually we provide handguns chambered in.22lr,.380, 38 special, 9mm, and 45acp. Handguns provided include a mix of revolvers and semi automatic pistols. NRA Certified Range Officers and Pistol Instructors will be on hand to assist at all levels. A great opportunity to improve your handgun techniques! PCWC on Facebook PCWC has a MEMBER ONLY Facebook page. It can be found by going to Facebook and searching "PITT COUNTY WILDLIFE CLUB-MEMBERS FORUM". This is another place to stay in touch with the club, current events and events that are coming up. It was set up just for current members to share their own pictures and experiences and the club. Check it out if you are a Facebooker. If you have questions please contact Louis Weaver (621-0405), Staci Rubio or Justin Smith. Club Ammo Sale The Pitt County Wildlife Club has acquired more 30-06 surplus ammo through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. This ammo will be sold at our club membership meetings. This ammo is Greek Military surplus. It is boxer primed, non-corrosive, and brass cased. M2 ball surplus. There are mixed dates on the cans. Cans are approximately 200 rounds each, usually a couple over. Price is $130 per can. For information and sales, contact Lenn Norment, (252) 341-2690. 3 Safety First River Path Please note that the river path may only be used from sunrise until 12:30 PM on Sunday. Members are not allowed to be on the river path when the ranges are open for use. This is a major safety violation. If you have any questions, please refer to your Range SOPs. Also, please remember that vehicles are not allowed on the ranges unless they are being used for club maintenance or to set up or take down match or event related materials. Please remember, it is the responsibility of all club members to report egregious safety violations when they witness them by notifying the club President Lee Grubb, any Board Member, Chief Range Safety Officer, or Range safety Officer. 3

Special Reminder Membership and Guest Badges Please make sure that you and your guests prominently display membership and guest badges at all times when you are on the club grounds. The badges are needed to help us identify members and guests alike to ensure that all persons on the club grounds are members or guests. In addition, if you bring a guest to the club, please make sure you both complete the liability waiver form located in the box on Range 7 when signing in your guest(s). Range Attention Needed Recently, we have noticed a significant increase in the amount of spent center fire shell casings left on the ranges. This seems to be a problem on the new ranges as well as the old ranges. Please make sure that you clean up after yourself. Leaving the spent shell casings is a safety hazard and a violation of the Club SOPs. We have also seen an increase in the number of unfired bullets left on the ranges. We all need to make sure that we leave the range in a clean and safe condition for other members to enjoy. I presume that the overwhelming majority of you do clean up after yourself and we all appreciate your efforts. If you notice people not cleaning up, please remind them in a friendly and professional way. The range we clean up is after all, our own range First Aid Boxes All members should have keys to the first aid boxes on the ranges. We ask that you check your key copy to make sure that it does in fact open the padlock. Checking the padlock on one range should suffice. If your key does not work the lock, contact Rick Brixon (252) 752-1256, or rbrixon@yahoo.com. Also be reminded that AED boxes are on Range 6 and inside the clubhouse. Standard Operating Procedures: A Reminder Please remember that eye and ear protection must be worn at all times on the ranges when firearms are in use. Please remember that firearms, magazines, or ammo cannot be handled when others are downrange. Do not affix or prop up any type of target to the vertical backer board posts. The posts may not be used to hold up any type of target, paper or steel. 4 Calendar of Events Board Meeting Thursday, June 1, 7:00 PM. Garand Shoot Saturday, June 3. Registration at 8:00 AM.
