Animal Needs and Habitats

Transcription:

An animal s habitat is the place where the animal L in the wild. It provides animals with 2 important things: F S It is a great place for animals to have their babies because everything they need is there for them. There are many different habitats. While at Knowsley Safari you might have talked about, the Savannah, the rainforests and the deserts. The Savannah How many seasons do we have in this country?... How many seasons do you get in the savannah grasslands?... Can you name them?... The Desert What is it like in the desert?... The Rainforest How many seasons are there in the rainforest?... Can you write the layers of the rainforest into the box below and put them in the right order? Forest floor Understory Emergent Canopy (= Top of rainforest) (= bottom of rainforest)

What is camouflage? What is a predator? Can you spot the animals in the pictures? Fill in the table below by writing in each box the name of a camouflaged animal you have spotted. Can you name one of the African animals you met at Knowsley Safari? What special adaptations did the animal have?

This is Pob. He is a snake. He lives in the. He rarely drinks because he gets the water he needs from his. His favourite food is This is Yoda. He is a. Yoda lives in the. He eats insects. Fill in the gaps using these missing words Tree Frog Mice Understory Rainforest Mob Food Eggs Antenna Desert Milk Meerkat Scorpion Stripes Camouflage Leaves Dazzle Herbivores Savannah

At Knowsley Safari a lot of planning goes into designing new enclosures. We need to make sure all of our animals are happy and have everything they need to live a comfortable life. Here is a list of things you MUST think about when designing a new enclosure! Behaviour of the animal does it climb, swim or burrow? Habitat of the animal in the wild Desert, Savannah, Rainforest Diet of the animal Herbivore, Carnivore or Omnivore Size of the animal Safety of the keepers Fun experience for the guests You will also need to make the enclosure interesting for the animal In the table on the next page there is an example of the sorts of things we would look at for an Amur Tiger. For the rest of the animals think about which habitat they live in and what type of behaviours they would be doing in the wild. Fill in the table.

Animal Habitat Plants Amur Tiger Forest Mixture of trees and grasses Lion Giraffe Meerkat Elephant Royal Python Material for outdoor area Rocks Trees to climb on Den to hide in Water Security level Water to drink Very high Pool to swim in Dangerous animal Any other comments Meat shoot to feed tigers without keepers getting too close

Design a brand new enclosure for one of the animals above. You can either draw the new enclosure in the space below or use different materials in your classroom. Think about the animals needs, the keepers needs and the guests needs. There is no budget so try to think of new ideas which will get guests to visit your enclosure.

Big Gary our Giant African Land Snail lives in the African Savannah. He would love to hear about your day at Knowsley Safari On the next page write him a letter to tell him: What you did at the safari park What your favourite part of the day was What your favourite animal was If you met Big Gary while you were at the Knowsley Safari see if you can answer the following questions: Circle the correct answer What does Big Gary have on top of his head?
