We open the conference season against two teams with a combined record of 14-6. They are both going to be tough game. LAST WEEK: Montana State Billings got a split on the road. On Jan. 2, MSUB fell 67-61 to Metro State. The Yellowjackets were down by nine 63-54 with 1:56 to go. Alira Carpenter scored seven points over the next minute to close the gap to two. MSUB was forced to foul and MSU hit enough free throws to hold on. Carpenter finished with 19 points and hit three triples while Jetton Meadors had 10 points and five steals. Defense was the name of game as MSUB turned back Colorado State-Pueblo 62-48 on January 3. Pueblo was held to 30.8% shooting from the floor. The most telling stat was the Jackets getting 32 defensive boards to just nine offensive rebounds for CSUP. For the Yellowjackets, Carpenter had 25 points and hit three triples and Meadors had 10 points and five assists. Shantelle Marquis had a solid all-around game with 10 points, nine rebounds, three steals and blocked four shots. QUEST FOR #1: Alira Carpenter already has three career records under her belt and is looking at a third. On December 18 agaisnt Chaminade, she nailed a three-pointer to become the alltime leading scorer. Carpenter currently has 1683 points and needs 201 points to score more points than any player in MSUB history, male or female. She also hold the records for three-pointers made (248) and attempted (607). Carpenter is also taking aim at field goals made (597) and attempted (1389). She needs 84 and 1 respectively. THE 400 CLUB: Welcome Jen Smith to the 400 club. No it is not any kind of social group. On December 15 agaisnt Hawaii Pacific, Smith became the 21st player in school history to record 400 career rebounds. She needs 58 rebounds to become the 18th player to have 500 rebounds. RANK IT UP: Montana State Billings is ranked among the top 10 in three catergories for NCAA Division II (Jan. 4, 2009). Shantelle Marquis is third in assists with 7.10 per game. Alira Carpenter dropped from second to fourth in scoring with 25.8 per game. As a the team the Jackets are seventh in assists with 19.82 per game. GNAC POLL: Montana State Billings received 37 points to place sixth in the GNAC Pre-Season Poll. Complete poll is below. 1. Alaska Anchorage (8) 86 2. Seattle Pacific (1) 67 3. Northwest Nazarene 65 4. Western Washington 55 5. Saint Martin s 40 6. Montana State Billings 37 7. Central Washington 28 8. Western Oregon 22 9. Alaska Fairbanks 17

HEAD COACH Kevin Woodin, 80-45, Fifth Season Kevin Woodin enters his fifth season as the head women s basketball coach and his second year as head women s golf coach. He has posted a 72-42 overall record heading into the season, capturing two Heartland Conference regular season titles and one conference tournament championship. Twice, Coach Woodin has guided the Yellowjackets to the NCAA Tournament. During the 2004-05 season, he was named the NCAA Division II Independent Coach of the Year. Woodin is currently the third winningest coach in MSUB history. Woodin became the Lady Yellowjackets eleventh head women s basketball coach when he took over on July 23, 2004. He had been the head girl s basketball coach at Billings West High School for the past ten seasons. In that time, he led the Lady Bears to a 138-81 record (.630), including back-to-back Class AA state titles in 2003 and 2004. Woodin s Bears were a perfect 23-0 in 2004 s title run and won the final 36 games Woodin coached at the school. He earned Montana AA Coach of the Year honors in 2003 and 2004, and was a finalist for the award in 1999 and 2002. A native of Libby, Mont., Woodin graduated with a degree in mathematics from Carroll College in 1987. While teaching and coaching at O Dea High School in Seattle, he earned his masters degree in Athletic Administration from Seattle Pacific University in 1992. Woodin taught mathematics at O Dea High School from 1987 to 1994 while also coaching boy s basketball, golf and tennis. He was named O Dea s Outstanding Teacher of the year in 1990-1991 and the Metro League Golf Coach of the Year three times. Woodin moved to Billings in 1994 to take over the girl s program at West High School where he has also taught mathematics. Along with leading the Lady Bears to State AA tournament hardware in four of his last six seasons, Woodin was also an assistant coach on the Montana All-Star Team and an Executive Committee member and coach for the Treasure State Classic. At West High, Woodin coached 19 players who went on to play collegiate basketball. Before the Montana High School Association moved the girl s basketball season to the winter, Woodin was a part time assistant coach at MSU Billings from 2000-2003. Responsible for practice and game planning, recruiting, scouting, individual skill development, travel and coordinating the Billings Bees camps, Woodin helped the Lady Yellowjackets to two NCAA Tournament appearances in three seasons. 80 IS GOOD: Montana State Billings does not fear 80. In fact, we embrace it. In the history of women s basketball, 100 times the Yellowjackets have scored 80+ points at home and have never lost. Yes you heard me correctly. MSUB is 100-0 when scoring at least 80 points in Alterowitz Gym. COUNTDOWN TO 100: Kevin Woodin is on track to becoming the third coach in school history to win 100 games. He is currently the third winningest coach in terms of victories with 80. Woodin trails Frank McCarthy (191) and Ted Anderson (102). LITTLE MISS CHARITY: We ll just call Alira Carpenter, Little Miss Charity. She is 63-of-72 from the line this season and has hit 45 of her last 50 attempts. Against Mary on Nov. 29, she tied the school and GNAC record by making 16 free throws. 600: On December 6, 2008, Montana State Billings hung on for a 65-61 win Metro State in Alterowitz Gym. It was the 600th career win for the the Yellowjackets. NO LOVE FOR COLORADO: The last time a team from Colorado beat MSUB at home? Let s say George Bush was President of the U.S. Senior that is. On Feb. 24, 1990, Denver beat the Jackets 66-65. Since then, the Yellowjackets have won nine straight games against Colorado opponents. THIS WEEK IN MSUB HISTORY: Jan. 9, 1988 - Evonne Goroski tied a school record in a 81-78 loss to Northern Colorado. She hit 16 field goals to tie the mark set by Theresa O Donnell vs. Great Falls on Dec. 15, 1983. Goroski finished the game with 39 points. Jan. 11, 2005 - Montana State Billings keeps its winning streak alive with a 75-62 win over Incarnate Word. It was the eighth straight win for the Jackets. Woodin has been married to his wife Paula for 21 years, and they have three children; Kayleen (15), Toria (12) and Garrett (10). His parents, Pete and Loretta Erickson, formerly of Libby, Montana, reside in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Woodin is a member of the Women s Basketball Coaches Association, Montana Coaches Association and National Golf Coaches Association.
