INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

INTRODUCTION FROM LALIT MODI BCCI VICE PRESIDENT AND IPL CHAIRMAN & COMMISSIONER 1 INTRODUCTION When I was studying at university in America (a very long time ago!), I was captivated by the fact that domestically, sport was so huge! Everywhere you went there was basketball, baseball and football and they sustained themselves financially on a solely domestic fan following. I watched with interest as these sports grew to become million and then billion dollar enterprises, caught up in the mechanics of their administrative and commercial functioning and asked myself why India couldn t have the same success with its passion cricket. And the idea was born. Once back in India I drew the blueprint to a professional city based cricket league, adapted from Major League sports in the USA and attempted to launch it in 1995. The hope was that by creating the franchise system, the Indian people would have a sense of belonging and ownership over their passion from a domestic perspective, My City, My Team. Unfortunately, it wasn t the right time. State cricket was in turmoil, the Board was underselling its broadcast rights and other sponsorship was at a bare minimum and the then Board of Control for Cricket in India was not open to the idea of launching such a new concept. I was in fact elected to do what I know I am best at, marketing and selling. Our team worked at revamping every aspect of the old proposal. We brought in the expertise of IMG and reviewed other countries domestic league systems and finally found that the English Premier League was the direction in terms of adaptation that we wanted to take. The last piece of the puzzle was to confirm the participation of the top international players in the world and once we had their commitment to the proposal, we launched the Indian Premier League. This has been a dream for me. I have visualized it for years now. For the BCCI, it means taking cricket to a whole new level that once upon a time ago, seemed like a fools dream. I would know, I tried over 10 years ago to launch it! Most importantly it means we finally revive domestic cricket and give it the boost that it needs. In 2005 when we won the election and a new Board was ready to move forward with new ideas and turn cricket around, the proposal for an Indian professional league came back to the fore and gathered quiet momentum. When I was elected as the Chairman of the Marketing Sub Committee, INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

INTRODUCTION FROM SUNIL GAVASKAR FORMER INDIA CAPTAIN AND IPL GOVERNING COUNCIL MEMBER 3 INTRODUCTION For an extremely traditional game like cricket, some of the changes that have taken place in the format have been dramatic to say the least, the latest being the Twenty20 format. Cricket has toyed with the 60 overs format which was used in the first three World Cups. It has also had the 55 overs a side version played by the counties in England as well as the Sunday League which was 40 overs per team. There have also been experiments in Australia with the two innings one day game, with each side getting 25 overs in each innings. There are also other versions such as the Super Max with 8 players, or the Sixes which, as the name suggests, has six players per team with 5 overs being bowled. However no format has captured the imagination of the public like Twenty20. It has taken cricket by storm all around the world and excitement levels have gone stratospheric. It is non-stop action from the first ball and there are more big sixes seen than ever before. The fitness levels required for this game are such that fielders seem to be performing acrobatics while trying to save the extra run that can mean the difference between winning and losing. Nothing excites the public more than a stupendous bit of fielding and it brings the crowd to its feet. In fact if anything the Twenty20 format keeps the crowd standing most of the time rather than sitting passively, for it is action stations every second. India has not had a domestic Twenty20 competition where all its top players play and the IPL will be just that, where not only Indian heroes but greats from other countries will also enliven and brighten the grounds and have the spectators asking for more. There s no better time to be a spectator than at the IPL Twenty20 and the beauty is that one doesn t have to have Twenty20 vision to do so. Sunil Gavaskar December 2007 INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

INTRODUCTION FROM RAVI SHASTRI FORMER INDIA CAPTAIN AND IPL GOVERNING COUNCIL MEMBER 5 INTRODUCTION The IPL is a concept that will take the game s popularity to an altogether different level. It is the future of the modern game and the perfect tool to take the game global and across boundaries. The fact that the game s top players will be involved means it s just the perfect platform for this format of the game to take off. Having played and watched cricket over the last three decades I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that this will be one of the biggest success stories this game has seen in times to come. Being a member of the Governing Council you can be assured that every effort will be made to see that the IPL is run in a thoroughly professional manner. Ravi Shastri December 2007 INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

In England, where it was first introduced in 2003, Twenty20 has resuscitated a moribund domestic game, packing stadiums on summer evenings The Economist, September 22nd 2007

7 INTRODUCTION WHY OWN AN IPL FRANCHISE? Financial Benefits: the right to own an asset with significant growth potential and to benefit from substantial revenues from various sources as the league develops Marketing Benefits an IPL Franchise will be a highly visible brand property with outstanding media visibility in India and overseas Collateral Benefits: to be regarded as a pioneer in the greatest national sporting and entertainment adventure ever undertaken INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

TWENTY20 THE FUTURE OF SHORT FORM CRICKET The fastest developing sports format of the modern era India s victory in the ICC World Twenty20 created an instant love for the format The perfect blend of sport and entertainment Ideal timing for evening and weekend match attendance TVRs in India for International cricket in 2007 Must have prime time content for broadcasters 25 Delivers key demographic groups to advertisers and sponsors Delivers new hard to reach demographic sectors (e.g. women and youth) 3 hour match duration guarantees exciting finishes with explosive action 20 15 ESPN STAR SPORTS Twenty20 has been an instant hit wherever it has taken place e.g. England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies Surveys in India suggest that Twenty20 is now overwhelmingly the preferred format of cricket to watch (76%) Truly an unbeleivable sporting phenomenon 10 5 0 ESPN STAR SPORTS ICC World Twenty20 average tournament ICC World Twenty20 India matches NEO SPORTS India v Pakistan ODI series average ESPN STAR SPORTS England v India Test series average

As an economy develops, the share of the sports, entertainment, and leisure industry soars. Sports leagues are multi-billion dollar franchises that generate not only income directly from sports, but also generate tourism, auxillary businesses, jobs and revenues SP Kolthari, The Economic Times, 15th October 2007

THE GROWING DEMAND FOR LIVE ENTERTAINMENT IN INDIA 11 INTRODUCTION As India s wealth base broadens, consumers will demand and be prepared to pay for, more and better live entertainment opportunities Watching live sport is a major weekly pastime in the world s advanced economies - approximately 400,000 attend Premiership football every weekend in England generating nearly $5 billion in matchday revenues (tickets, premium seating, ground concessions etc) In recent years international music acts such as the Rolling Stones, Shakira and Black Eyed Peas have played to packed stadiums in India the Indian public are starved of high quality entertainment opportunities A star studded Twenty20 cricket tournament will help to satisfy this increasing demand Late afternoon/evening scheduling is ideal for television audiences, and for attracting the post-work crowd and families to the stadiums Going to a Twenty20 match is about more than cricket, with music, dancing and other entertainment NB: A major goal of the IPL is to improve India s stadium infrastructure which in turn will improve spectator experience and encourage new strands of live entertainment INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

13 INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION TO IPL 8 Franchised City teams will compete Franchise numbers will increase over time with founder Franchise s rights protected The inaugural IPL season will run for 44 days starting in April 2008 Each Franchise will play each other home and away 7 guaranteed home matches per Franchise (Each NFL Franchise has 8 home games) The top 4 Franchises in the league will contest the semi finals and the victorious semi finalists will meet in the Grand Final all over one weekend A total of 59 matches this creates a total of 177 hours of live content The 2 IPL finalists will advance to the new Champions Twenty20 tournament provisionally scheduled for October 2008 Matches will be played to ICC World Twenty20 regulations INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

I look forward to playing in the IPL. The outpouring of emotions when India lifted the inaugural World Twenty20 is the stuff legends are made of and as a cricketer I have always loved the passion and enthusiasm of the cricket loving public in India. Graeme Smith - South Africa Captain

15 INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION TO IPL PLAYERS The world s top cricketers will play in domestic Indian cricket for the first time Many of the world s top cricketers have already committed to the IPL including: Each Franchise squad will comprise a minimum of 16 players All Indian national team players will be available for recruitment Up to four international stars may play for a Franchise in any particular match 4 under-21 players and 4 players from the Franchise s catchment area will be in each squad (these can be the same players) Each Franchise will be required to have: Australia: Shane Warne, Glen McGrath, Justin Langer, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Michael Clarke, Mike Hussey, Brett Lee, Matthew Hayden, Nathan Bracken, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Jason Gillespie, Cameron White Pakistan: Shoaib Malik, Mohammed Yousuf, Shoaib Akthar, Younis Khan, Mohammed Asif, Shahid Afridi Sri Lanka: Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Zoysa, Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakara, Farveez Maharoof, Dilhara Fernando - An executive team - A team manager - A professional coaching team - A Physiotherapist - An event manager - Other support staff South Africa: Graeme Smith, Ashwell Prince, Herschelle Gibbs, Albie Morkel, AB de Villiers, Shaun Pollock, Loots Bosman, Jacques Kallis, Makhaya Ntini New Zealand: Stephen Fleming, Brendan McCullum, Jacob Oram, Daniel Vettori, Scott Styris Players will be allocated in a player drafting auction immediately following the awarding of Franchises West Indies: Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

My philosophy of Franchise ownership is a partnership between the city, the fans and the team Jeffrey Lurie, owner of NFL's Philadelphia Eagles

17 INTRODUCTION DEMAND FROM CITIES Hosting an IPL Franchise will deliver very significant value to Indian cities and will enhance a city s status both nationally and internationally Citizens will want city authorities to encourage and attract a Franchise owner Hosting a Franchise will provide a wide range of opportunities to citizens in entertainment, employment, commerce and civic pride In the US, city authorities offer significant incentives to attract Franchises and work with Franchises to create value for the city and the Franchise The Champions Twenty20 tournament will reward successful Franchises with an overseas showcase for their city INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

SPORTS FRANCHISING THE CRITICAL FACTORS 19 FRANCHISE MODEL Many of the world s top sports competitions are run on a Franchise basis NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS, Superleague, AFL The Franchisee enters the league by investing in a Franchise The Franchisee receives a share of the central revenues and has the opportunity to develop and retain local revenues As well as benefitting from a number of realisable assets, the Franchisee is perceived as a good corporate citizen, and receives significant public relations and marketing benefits As the league matures the revenues grow and the brand develops, the capital value of the Franchise grows Franchises are traded under terms agreed between the Franchisor and the Franchisee The Franchisee s investment is secured by guaranteed continued participation in the competition Expansion Franchises are awarded in a manner designed to benefit the existing stakeholders INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

The IPL is fantastic for sport in India. I am sure that the fans will enjoy the competition, and I hope that the IPL will bring a new generation of fans to India s cricket stadiums Yuvraj Singh Indian batsman

FINANCIAL BENEFITS OF FRANCHISE OWNERSHIP 21 FRANCHISE MODEL An asset in the form of the Franchise that can be expected to grow in value The right to trade the asset and realise the capital growth Participation in revenues that are very likely to show substantial growth over time A diverse range of revenue streams to develop and exploit Defined territorial exclusivity in which to develop fan loyalty and market position The encouragement and support of a city s residents and authorities INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

In its first week on sale LA Galaxy s David Beckham Adidas no.23 shirt sold over 200,000 units, making it the fastest selling replica sports uniform in the world Mail on Sunday, July 22nd 2007

REVENUE 23 FRANCHISE MODEL The revenue opportunity is divided into two distinct areas 1. Central: - Media - Sponsorship - Official Suppliers 2. Local: Top 5 football uniform supplier agreements (per season) $ 50m 40m 30m 20m 10m - Gate 0 BARCELONA MANCHESTER REAL 2008-2018 UNITED MADRID 2002-2015 2004-2012 CHELSEA 2006-2014 JUVENTUS 2003-2015 - Franchise title sponsorship - Franchise shirt sponsorship - Local sponsorships - Licensing programme - Uniform merchandising - Hospitality and premium seating - Matchday concessions Most valuable European football shirt sponsorship agreements (per season) $ 30m 24m 18m 12m 6m - Matchday promotions 0 JUVENTUS MANCHESTER UNITED REAL MADRID BAYERN MUNICH CHELSEA - Franchise media platforms e.g. Franchise channels and websites INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

SHARE MODEL OF CENTRAL REVENUES 25 FRANCHISE MODEL The Franchises will receive the following share of central revenues: Television (after production costs) Year 1 80% Year 2 80% Year 3 70% Year 4 70% Years 5-10 60% Year 11 onwards 50% Sponsorship Years 1-10 60% Year 11 onwards 50% Of the total amount to be distributed, 80% will be paid to the Franchises in equal proportions and 20% will be based on final league positions This distribution model is based on IPL s current forecasts for the first contracts for centralised television and sponsorship agreements. IPL reserves the right to adjust the distribution model if these forecasts materially change INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

That Twenty20 has a bright future in India is scarcely beyond doubt. Indian cricket fans are not purists: they like the shorter forms of cricket. Moreover, Twenty20 is popular with the young people whose attention the advertisers crave The Economist, September 22nd 2007

MARKETING BENEFITS OF FRANCHISE OWNERSHIP 27 FRANCHISE MODEL An IPL Franchise is certain to be amongst the highest profile sporting brand properties available in India Media coverage of the IPL guarantees a far reaching and highly visible profile for Franchises The key brand values of Twenty20 and the IPL e.g. Modern, Pacy, Engaging, Fresh, Accessible - allied to the traditional brand values of cricket e.g. Reliable, Honest, Traditional, Gentlemanly - make for an extraordinarily compelling mix for brands The brand maturation path will be short, IPL will be known to all India before it launches benefits of association will therefore be immediate As all Franchises are guaranteed to play the full league season there is no marketing risk associated with early elimination INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

COLLATERAL BENEFITS OF FRANCHISE OWNERSHIP 29 FRANCHISE MODEL The opportunity to contribute to the well being and feel good factor of the host city and its citizens Being perceived as a pioneer in the project that will revitalise Indian domestic cricket and lead the way in the development of live entertainment in the country Being associated with many of the world s leading cricket superstars Being part of an enduring project whose brand values will be extremely positive Being involved in the project that will improve the stadium infrastructure in India and the spectator experience of fans INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

Owning the Yankees is like owning the Mona Lisa George Steinbrenner, owner of MLB's New York Yankees

CAPITAL GROWTH POTENTIAL 31 FRANCHISE MODEL Franchise capital growth will be achieved for the following reasons: An increase in central revenues paid to the Franchise due to an increase in value of the revenues received for media and sponsorship rights An increase in Multiples paid to acquire Franchises due to the maturation of the IPL brand An increase in the local gate revenues achieved as the IPL adventure gains momentum and as more fans paying higher prices attend the matches The establishment of a licensing programme which sells official merchandise e.g. team shirts etc. to the broadening fan base An increase in the value of the local sponsorship and supplier rights The establishment and exploitation of premium seating and hospitality products and the revenues that will flow therefrom Creation of an even more competitive Franchise market place than may exist at launch as investors recognise the financial opportunities that are presented by investing in a sports Franchise The peripheral opportunities to create other new entertainment product that will arise from owning an IPL Franchise Owners of US and UK sports teams have historically been amongst the most high profile businessmen and corporations, for example: - Nintendo Seattle Mariners (MLB) - Ford Detroit Lions (NFL) - Time Warner Atlanta Braves (MLB) - Paul Allen (Microsoft) Seattle Seahawks (NFL) - Roman Abramovich Chelsea (EPL) - Malcolm Glazer Manchester United (EPL) INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

OBLIGATIONS OF IPL 33 FRANCHISE MODEL To award Franchises and to set the rules of the competition To be responsible for marketing the centrally controlled commercial rights To arrange the IPL tournament schedule To manage Franchise travel and accommodation programme To provide general advice to Franchises on the exploitation of local revenues To work with Franchises to ensure consistently high standards of match day implementation To provide Franchises with a handbook of match management requirements To provide umpires and match officials INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

OBLIGATIONS OF FRANCHISES 35 FRANCHISE MODEL To comply with the regulations specified by the Franchisor to protect the IPL To recruit players that ensure a competitive team To be responsible for match day event management subject to the guidelines of the IPL Costs borne by the Franchise: The Franchise fee The player salaries The Franchise executive, management and coaching salaries Stadium leasing costs Matchday costs e.g. staffing, security under guidelines provided by the IPL Franchise offices and administration Franchise travel and accomodation INDIAN PREMIER TWENTY LEAGUE20

37 FINANCIAL INFO CURRENT FINANCIAL INFORMATION ON CRICKET Cricket revenues have grown by extraordinary multiples since the early 1990 s, as broadcasters and advertisers recognise the powerful communication force the game represents.
