Johan. & Edw. I. 1 Antiquissime l[itte]re Patentes & Concessiones. Mm No. of 6 56 (30+26d) in 1 This roll, though stated by Lodge and others as one of the 11th of Edw. III, appears to be a roll of Edw. I, and contains grants by Hen. II; John, when earl Morton and also when king; by Hen. III. and Edw. I. The words Antiquissime littere patentes & Concessiones appear at the heading, in the hand-writing of the time of James I; at which period it is evident it was considered the most ancient roll in this office. II Sept. 1309 to May 1310 4 [3] 251 (67+184d) 12 This appears to be a close roll; the contents are, in general, liberates, grants, presentations, deeds, writs, recognizances, a writ of summons to parliament; it is a good deal injured and defaced, particularly on the back. 1 Eight membranes (6 + 2) of the so-called Antiquissime roll were extant in 1828: six in RCI roll 1 and two more calendared in as anno 11 Edw. II. 2 a pars (=RCI roll 9). 2 The general observations of 1819 state that RCI roll 4 consisted of 3 membranes; the catalogue in records 4 membranes.

Nearly half this roll is decayed, the remainder is in good preservation. The word, patentia, is written on the back of one of the membranes. 10 VIII 13 Edward II [1319 20] anno 13 Edw. II. Rotulus de patentibus de anno regni Regis Edw. fil Regis Edwardi. July 1319 to June 1320 4 93 (53+40d) 26 The patent roll contains inrolments of the same nature as that of the 11 th year. Part of the first and last membranes are much 3 includes an editorial note at the start of the roll (p. 19) to the effect that the Ms was considerably worn away ( nonnulla detrita ). This tallies with the fact that the first two articles listed in the general observations of 1819 (i.e. those concerning Robert Chapelyn and Nicholas Freysel respectively) are given in as nos. 12 and 13 respectively, indicating that there were eleven illegible on the first damaged membrane of the roll. 4 RCI roll 7 is a controlment roll. These were normally written on one side only; this roll contains a single item on the dorso (, p. 21, no. 33), namely an enrolment of an indenture of receipt for money received by the treasurer as a loan from John Darcy. 5 RCI roll 9 is listed in as if it were the second part of a patent roll; in fact it was the only portion of Patent Roll 11 Edward II extant in the nineteenth century; the roll listed in as part one comprised the two detached membranes of the Antiquissime roll (=RCI roll 1). records (p. 21, no. 1) that the first item of RCI roll 9 was illegible, and that the following annotation was found in the margin of the membrane: Ric[ard]us de Prestou[n]. Com[m]issio.. The dorso begins with note (p. 23) to the effect that the first abound with lacunae on account of wear and tear sustained by the roll; the editors supplied conjectural readings in square brackets. 2

EDWARD III (25 Jan. 1327 21 June 1377) =Close Roll 8 Edw. 8 144 III (73+71d) July 1334 to Jan. 1335 37 This roll is much damaged, but it contains 136 legible inrolments.1. Rob le Poer, off. 2. Joh de Mauncestre, breve. 6 James F. Ferguson, The mere English and the mere Irish, Transactions of the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, 1 (1849 51), p. 508. 7 records (p. 34, no. 33) that the final item on RCI roll 13 was totally obliterated by 1828; there were considerable lacunae in the previous four (nos. 29 32). 8 Edward II abdicated on 20 Jan. 1327, but the Irish chancery did not stop dating letters in his name until May 1327. 9 records (p. 37) that the start of this roll had perished by 1828. In total it gives a calendar for 144 numbered for this roll, but nos. 9 10, 14 15, and 142 4 are listed as being illegible, while portions of several others had perished by 1828 (e.g., nos. 16, 17, 84, 90, 126). also records that a part of the membrane at the start of the dorso had been ripped away ( Quedam hinc avulsa ). All this makes sense of the statement in the general observations of 1819 that the roll consisted of 136 legible inrolments., p. 37, no. 2 is an undated writ to have 6 balistas cum apparatu pro garnestura Viridis Castri. does not include an address clause, but from the general observations of 1819 it appears that the addressee was John de Mauncestre. 3

III, part 2 June to Dec. 1346 8 154 (81+73) 50 This roll is in tolerable preservation. and contains 153 inrolments. 2 10 A total of 3 membranes (2 + 1) from Patent Roll 11 Edward III were extant in 1828, two in RCI roll 17 and a single membrane in RCI roll 18. 11 (pp 43, 48) records that both the start and end of this roll were truncated. The described in the general observations of 1819 as partly destroyed were the first four enrolments on the dorso of the roll (, p. 46, nos. 106 9). 12 A total of 11 membranes (3 + 8) from Patent Roll 20 Edward III were extant in 1828, three in RCI roll 20 and eight in RCI roll 21. (p. 48) records that the start of RCI roll 20 was mutilated: this explains why the numeration in the calendar begins at no. 26. The first three on the dorso are also recorded as having been so obliterated that the editors could learn nothing from them (p. 49, nos. 67 9); and likewise nos. 95 7 were illegible, which may indicate that these were the first of a new membrane on the dorso of the roll. 4

Its location in the record treasury was 3D.11a.1. 14 records (p. 55) that only an occasional word was legible from nos. 39 40 to the end of the roll. 15 RCI roll 24 does not appear in. [sic] Ric Walsh, id. 17 records (p. 64) that a considerable amount of this roll had been lost and, where possible, the editors supplied conjectural readings in square brackets. Item nos. 52, 56, 58 62, 67 and 68 were totally illegible. After no. 68 (p. 66), the calendar records that at this point in the roll there was a large hole ( Hic seq[uitu]r in rotulo hiatus 25 digitorum [?i.e. 25 inches] ), as a result of which many other may have been lost. The numeration in continues after the hiatus from no. 69. Item no. 72 was illegible, but the editors learned from a note in the margin of the roll that it was a commission to William Broun of the office of escheator in co. Meath. 18 The discrepancy in the number of enrolments recorded here is presumably the result of the large number of illegible and near-illegible on the roll. 19 records (p. 80) that the first item on the roll was utterly obliterated in 1828. The General observations of 1819 list the first legible item as being no. 4, concerning William de Karlell, (=, p. 81, no. 4), followed by no. 2 concerning Richard Walsh (=, p. 81, no. 5); but also records a few stray words for nos. 2 and 3. 6

July 1379 to Feb. 1380 3 31 (31+0d) 106 One side of this roll is damaged. 20 The general observations of 1819 and each give different a different number of enrolments for RCI roll 33. The discrepancy is accounted for by the fact that places under a single item number (i.e. p. 90, no. 132) a series of writs of summons to the parliament to be held at Dublin at Hilary 1375. 21 records that the first two on the dorso of this roll (p. 101, nos. 64 5) were so obliterated and damaged that they were illegible in 1828. Edward III died on 21 June 1377, but the Irish chancery did not stop enrolling letters in his name until July. 22 RCI roll 38 was an exchequer roll and consequently it was not calendared in. Possibly it was a controlment roll, but there is no corresponding issue roll extant for this period (Irish exchequer payments, p. 541, n. 1). The pre-1922 PROI Chancery Finding Aids, vol. 1, lists this roll as 2 Richard II Exchequer Reward Roll. Its location in the record treasury was 3D.11a.3. 7

II. 27 anno Regni Regis Ric[ard]i s[e]c[un]di July 1385 to April 1386 21 249 (192+57d) 123 From the seventeenth to the twenty-first membrane, inclusive, this roll is partly damaged in the margin; and the first 23 records that the first two on the dorso were illegible in 1828 (p. 117, nos. 67 8). 24 RCI roll 41 is entitled anno 5 Ric. II. 1 a pars, but it was the only portion of Patent Roll 5 Richard II extant in 1828. RCI roll 42, described as the second part of this patent roll, was in fact a close roll. 25 A total of 11 membranes (9 + 2) of Patent Roll 8 Richard II were extant in 1828: nine membranes were in RCI roll 43, and a further two detached membranes comprised RCI roll 44. 26 records (p. 122) that the roll had sustained considerably injuries by 1828 from tearing, obliterations and rubbing [ tam per laceraciones quam per obliterations et detrimenta temporis ]. The on the roll were numbered in a modern hand beginning with number 6 the fragments at the start of the roll having been omitted as they were utterly obliterated. The editors, however, were able to detect seven from this initial un-numbered section, and included what they could of these while retaining the numeration of the series. Thus the first seven are numbered in as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5 (b), and 5 (c). The articles given in the general observations of 1819 as being the first legible in the roll (i.e. those concerning John Tyrell and James de Penkeston ) are, p. 122, nos. 5 (c) and 6 respectively. 27 records that the first two articles on the dorso were so rubbed that they were illegible by 1828 (p. 126, nos. 193 4). 8

June to Nov. 1391 5 105 (69+36d) 147 The first membrane much torn. 28 records that the end of the roll was damaged by obliterations (p. 130). 29 Letters in this year were issued in the name of the marquis of Dublin, Robert de Vere. 30 The reference in the general observations of 1819 to the first entry on the front of the second membrane refers to an inspeximus of letters patent of Robert de Vere, marquis of Dublin, dated 26 Oct. [1387] 11 Richard II (=, p. 138, no. 35). From this we may infer that the first membrane of RCI roll 49 contained 34 enrolments. 9
