It takes dedication to reach goals. Color Guard members are expected to come to rehearsal with the right attitude of sincerity, concentration, and dedication to working hard to achieve success with their teammates. A good attitude and a strong work ethic is the difference between a successful organization and a mediocre group. Members of the MHS Color Guard are asked to make a commitment to the program through their time and effort. As a member, you are required to commit to the rehearsal and performance schedule, and you are required to show up on time. You are also expected to dedicate time to practice outside of rehearsal. Examples of outside practice: mental practice with music before bed, stretching and conditioning, going outside and working on challenging maneuvers. When the members of a competitive group have pride, maturity, class, and style, it shows. When the members of a group are lacking these qualities, it shows even more. Remember, it takes much longer to build a good reputation than to ruin one. Eligibility Eligibility to represent Maryville High School in interscholastic activities is a privilege to be attained by meeting the standards of eligibility cooperatively set by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) and Maryville High School. Attendance: All students must be present a full day, or have a doctor s note excusing the student in order to be eligible to participate in an event or practice, unless extenuating circumstances have been reviewed and approved by administrators. For competitions on a day that school is not in session, he/she must be present the day before the event. Citizenship Standards: Students who represent MHS must be credible citizens and judged so by the proper school authority responsible for certifying a student for competition. Those students, whose character or conduct is such that it reflects discredit upon themselves or their school are not considered credible citizens.
Academic Emphasis: Students must have earned 3.0 credits the previous semester, which means you must pass (with a grade of D or higher) 6 of your 7 classes for the semester (Spring 2016) to be eligible for the next semester (Fall 2016). Attendance Attendance is required for all practices and performances. Any absence at the last rehearsal prior to a performance will result in that member sitting out of that performance. Excessive tardiness or unexcused absences will result in the student losing their position in the choreography or in the Color Guard program. If a member is late by 30 minutes or more, it will count as a missed rehearsal. Once a member reaches 10 missed rehearsals, they will be removed from the program. All members must report absences to Ms. Mattke as soon as the absence is known. Telling your friend to tell your coach is not acceptable. In the event of a conflict of school activities with Color Guard, the member must notify Ms. Mattke, and a compromise of time will be discussed and arranged with the other sponsor, on a case by case basis. Rehearsal Expectations It is imperative that you arrive to every rehearsal on time. If a rehearsal is scheduled for 6:30, that is not the drop off time. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to set up. There is to be NO TALKING during stretching, while an instructor is giving instruction/talking, during warm-ups, during meetings, or while we are spinning. Please wear appropriate clothing to rehearsal, no jeans or other movementconstricting clothing. No rings or bracelets during rehearsals, for your safety. Cell phones/mp3 players must be put away with the ringer turned off. No chewing gum is allowed at any time during rehearsal. There will be no use of profanity, slander, or negativity. Attitude is crucial. All school rules are in effect during rehearsals. Performance/Festival Expectations Never disrespect other guards/bands or their members, always cheer for others.
