SPORTS MANAGEMENT TEAM

SPORST MANAGEMENT TEAM REPORT 2013-14 Management is just a Game, Sports means Business Valhalla 2013 There was a buzz in the cool, refreshing air at the SIBM campus. Valhalla 2013 was around the corner and the sporting contingent of SIBM seemed determined to repeat the stellar performance of 2012. Valhalla being the first sports competition of the year, the first year students were especially charged up, the previous year s performance strengthening their resolve. The Sports cum Cultural fest, Valhalla 2013 was conducted on the 27 th and 28 th of July, 2013 and 8 premier business schools from all over India were invited to be a part of the event. IIM Calcutta, NMIMS, IIM Ranchi, XIMB in addition to hosts XLRI, Jamshedpur were some of the B-Schools that had sent their very best sportspersons to the competition which came to be marked by the superior level of talent at display. SIBM, Pune performed admirably in all the sporting events and was lauded for the levels of commitment shown. SIBM, Pune took part in various Sports events, namely, Badminton (Men And Women), Basketball (Men And Women), Table Tennis (Men), Throwball (Women), Football (Men) As the whole campus slept, ensconced in a world of their own, a 31 member strong contingent left the SIBM Campus for Jamshedpur in the early hours of 25 th of July. A 30 hour train journey lay ahead, but this did not deter the members who had their sights set on winning the competition. Upon reaching, the members soaked in the festival atmosphere that the campus was veiled in. The next morning, 28 th of July began with the opening ceremony at the college auditorium and all the teams were addressed by the organising council and Charles Borromeo, an Arjuna and Padma Shri Awardee. His address greatly energised the teams and the two day event started on a great note. Badminton: The SIBM, Pune team fought very hard in a field filled with very talented badminton teams. The Men s team comprised of Mittul Parikh, Abir Lavasa and Amiya Behera. In the first round, the team was pitted against a very good IIM Calcutta team. Amiya Behera put up a very strong fight but was undone by a stronger opponent. Mittul fought hard in the second singles match but ended up going down in two sets. The Women s team comprised of Monica Bommareddy, Setu Gandral and Sakshi Dhanda. The first round against IIM Calcutta turned out to be an interesting affair. After losing the first match, the SIBM team came back in the doubles and the second singles match to advance into the Semis. Here the team faced a strong XIMB team. In the first singles match, Setu lost after

putting up a spirited effort and in the doubles match, Monica and Sakshi, had to accept defeat after a gruelling encounter. Football: The Football tournament at Valhalla 2013 turned out to be a very good learning experience for a talented SIBM Football team. The team comprised of Rahul Ponodath, Hijaaz Ali, Abir Lavasa, Varun Gill, Navdeep Rathore, Avinash Taneja, Rishabh Gairola, Rohit Nag, Sanjay Satish, Manmeet Singh, Apoorv Singh, Mitul Parikh, Suraj Kalbag.

The team was up against XIMB in the first round. After soaking up pressure from the opposite team in the initial few minutes, SIBM began finding their groove and the game began to be firmly entrenched in the XIMB half. However, a momentary lapse in the first half resulted in an XIMB goal. The second half saw SIBM relentlessly attacking the XIMB goal and they were almost rewarded in the dying minutes due to some brilliant link up play by Rishabh Gairola and Varun Gill. However, it was not to be and XIMB ran out 1-0 winners. Table Tennis: The SIBM, Pune table tennis team too displayed great talent and skill in the tournament, showing a great deal of effort, fight and determination against their opponents. The team comprised of Rajat Nagar, Aditya Jajoo and Rishabh Gairola. In the first round, facing XIMB, Rajat put up a polished display dispatching his opponent in straight sets. Not to be left behind, Aditya also came up with a solid display, winning his match comfortably. The Semi Final caused much heart break for the travelling contingent. After winning the first match, the team went down in the subsequent singles and doubles match to bow out of the tournament. Basketball: Basketball created quite a buzz at Valhalla, 2013. Night matches and close finishes stoked up a lot of interest amongst the spectators. The SIBM, Pune men s basketball team comprised of Ramneek Puri, Jorawar Singh, AbirLavasa, Rahul Ponodath, Navdeep Singh Rathore, Vipul Kalra, Sidhant Bhutia and Ritesh Dwivedi.

The team started the tournament in great fashion emphatically trashing a hapless IIM Raipur team. Taking this confidence into the second round, the basketball team got the better of IIM Calcutta after a close fight. The stage was set for a showdown with the hosts, XLRI in the final of the tournament which was to be a repeat of last year s final. The match began on a sad note, with a XLRI player being stretchered out due to a nasty injury. The game however went on and SIBM quickly took control of the momentum. They enjoyed this dominant position through the first three quarters and as the game moved into the fourth quarter, a win looked very likely. However in the final quarter, XLRI launched a remarkable comeback backed by a raucous support and in part due to some dodgy refereeing. In the end, the XLRI team levelled the scores, and just after going into a one point lead, the referee blew the whistle in what seemed to be a severely curtailed final quarter. The sudden change in fortunes was a bitter pill to swallow, even as the XLRI team celebrated their victory. The women s team comprised of Swati Negi, Chhaya Kewalramani, Preeti Lakhotia, Sakshi Dhanda, Akanksha Inda, Suharika Karri and Setu Gandral. The team played its heart out and nearly managed to enter the Finals, but had to exit the competition after a defeat at the hands of XIMB. Throwball: The throwball team comprised of Monica Bommareddy, Swati Negi, Sanika Kulkarni, Suharika Karri, Setu Gandral, Akanksha Inda, Preeti Lakhotia and Sakshi Dhanda. In the first round, SIBM faced XIMB. Amidst much cheering for both the sides, the teams fought well. Teamspirit and coordination were on show. However, XIMB won the game in straight sets ending SIBM s hopes in the throwball tournament.

Box Cricket The new academic year saw the Sports Management Team organising the very popular Box- Cricket Tournament, which attracted more than 30 teams from both the batches and created immense excitement and buzz on the campus. The matches were held at the Basketball Court over 4 days with an enthusiastic response from the girl participants as well. The event with its very unique rules provided all the teams with a challenge and the teams who could adapt themselves to these modifications eventually emerged winners. It also served as one of the first platforms on which the junior and the senior batches could interact with each other. Dwandva Dwandva, which saw the MBA I and II teams facing off against each other in nine disciplines was organised in the month of January by SMT over a period of 3 days. This event saw both the batches display their versatility and their strengths across different sporting disciplines as they tried to outsmart each other. Determination reigned supreme and the event witnessed intense action. At the same time, the event succeeded in creating a great camaraderie between the two batches. Generating immense interest amongst the students especially during the Football, Cricket and Tug-of-War rounds, the above disciplines were once again a reminder of the sporting talent that SIBM Pune was blessed with.

SPL 6 The last event of the year, and certainly not the smallest was the 5th edition of the SIBM Premier League. An event modelled on the Indian Premier League, over 140 players, spread across 8 teams, all vying to become the champions. It was a fabulous event with tremendous participation from every student in the college. Some riveting cricket and there were some gems unearthed through the course of the tournament. It was a fabulous event with tremendous participation from everybody in the college. The events in SPL in a chronological order are as follows: Team Name and Captains Auctions Palpable tension at the Auctions A formal auction of prospective captains of the 8 teams was organized. The captains prepared videos introducing themselves and what they would bring to the team in a bid to win the owners attention. Legacy Team Names (Wolves, Spartans, Eagles, Dragons, Sharks, Bisons, Devils and Stallions) were also auctioned for points. The event was held at the Assembly hall and was witnessed a huge turnout from both MBA I and II. Players Auctions

Strategic planning The Players Auctions was an exciting day for all aspiring cricketers. All the interested players from MBA-I and MBA-II were auctioned to the 8 teams. This exercise helped in understanding strategies and managing unexpected turn of events as every team had to construct their team from scratch within 5000 points. Every player got an opportunity to be part of a team and the teams were finalised and were raring to get to the field. The week-long event will have 8 teams : Wolves, Spartans, Eagles, Dragons, Sharks, Bisons, Devils and Stallions. These teams will be divided into 2 groups of 4 each and in each group,

every team will play the other team once. After the initial rounds of the group matches, the top two teams from each group willmove ahead to the semi-finals.
