SEEKING A SEASON SWEEP--A win today would give Kansas City a 7-0 mark against the Rays in 2015, which would mark the first unbeaten season series of at least seven games since the 1988 season when the Royals posted a 12-0 mark against Baltimore...KC has already swept a pair of Interleague sets this season, going 4-0 against both Milwaukee and Cincinnati. TWO OUTS??? -- NO PROBLEM--The Royals added to their two-out success by plating four of their six runs last night after two were away...a huge portion of KC s success vs. the Rays this year has come in two-out situations, with the Royals plating 64.3% of their runs against Tampa Bay with just one out to go (27 of 42)...the Royals lead the Majors in two-out hitting at.282, while the Major League average for two-out hitting stands at.242...kc is also slugging at a 435 clip, second best in the Majors, while leading the bigs with runners in scoring position and two away also at.282...kc has plated 239 two-out runs, second most in the American League...a season ago, Kansas City hit just.236 in two-out situations with 219 total runs...the Royals boast three of the top six individual two-out hitters with Lorenzo Cain (.396) leading the league, followed by Kendrys Morales (.339) in fourth and Eric Hosmer (.335), who is sixth...hosmer (59), Morales (59) and Cain (57) rank tied for second and tied for and fourth, respectively in two-out hits...morales, who is tied for third in the A.L. in overall RBI (90) has driven more than half of those in with two outs, leading the Majors with 47, eclipsing Joe Randa s (2000) previous club record of 46. THE COMEBACK KIDS--The Royals rebounded quickly from losing its lead last night by plating a pair of fourth inning runs to retake the lead and eventually post the 6-3 triumph...it marked the 35th come-from-behind win this year, eclipsing the entire total of comebacks from last season and taking over the A.L. lead (Houston has 34). PEN BACK ATOP THE RANKINGS--The bullpen contributed 3.2 scoreless innings last night, giving the group 6.0 shutout frames through the first two games of this series while dropping its season ERA to 2.31 to edge past St. Louis (2.32) for the best relief corps in the Majors...in the last 12 games, the KC pen has a 1.47 ERA (7 earned runs in 43.0 innings)...the Royals have also combined for a 26-8 record by their pen, easily the best winning percentage in baseball, at.765, while KC s 47 saves are third-most in the Majors, behind only the Cards (53) and Tampa Bay (49). TODAY S STARTING PITCHERS: LHP Danny Duffy (7-6, 4.13) vs. RHP Nathan Karns (7-5, 3.69) 2015 2014 Career 2015 2014 Career Danny Duffy vs. Rays - - 0-1 Major League Record 7-6 (4.13 ERA) 9-12 24-28 Nathan Karns vs. Royals 0-1 - 0-1 Major League Record 7-5 (3.69 ERA) 1-1 8-7 DANNY DUFFY makes his 21st start of the year, his 77th career assignment and 83rd overall appearance...he takes on Rays for the second time in his career, his first since 2011...a native of Lompoc, Calif., Duffy was originally selected by Kansas City in the third round of the 2007 June Draft. SOLID VS. O S--Danny returned to the win column last Tuesday with a 3-2 triumph over the Orioles in Kauffman Stadium...he gave up two runs on five hits over 5.2 innings, with a pair of walks and five strikeouts...duff set down 11 of the first 13 hitters he faced as the Royals built a 3-0 lead...his only issue took place in the fourth when he issued a twoout walk and three straight singles, cutting the lead to 3-2...when the O s threatened again with two outs in the sixth, Luke Hochevar and KC s bullpen took over, recording the final 10 outs to preserve the victory, Danny s third of the month and fifth since the start of July. STILL A SOLID SECOND HALF--Duffy has performed admirably over his last 10 outings...since July 1, Danny is 5-2 with a 3.03 ERA (20 ER in 59.1 IP), with a.236 opponents average and six quality starts...comparatively, over his first 10 starts, he went 2-4 with a 5.44 ERA (30 ER in 49.2 IP), with opponents hitting.302, while he turned in just two quality starts. BETTER VS. LEFTIES--One reason for Duff s improvement in recent starts has been better results against left-handed hitters...after allowing lefties to hit.326 (15-for-46) over his first 10 starts, Danny has held them to a.186 average (8-for-43) over his last 10 outings, which included holding Orioles lefties hitless in six at-bat last Tuesday...in 2014, he held fellow southpaws to the second-lowest average in MLB (.137), while he has still not allowed a homer to a left-handed batter since Jim Thome took him deep on August 27, 2011, spanning 263 at-bats. WINNINGEST MONTH--Duffy makes his final August start, looking for his fourth victory, which would establish a career high for a single month...throughout his career, August has been kind to the lefty as he enters tonight s start with an 8-6 record and a 3.62 ERA (43 ER in 107.0 IP) in 19 career starts in the eighth month...his eight career wins in August are easily the most of any month as he s recorded 16 wins in all other months combined. AFTERNOON DELIGHT--Danny looks to stay unbeaten in the afternoon, entering today at 2-0 with a 3.41 ERA with a.248 opponents average in five daytime starts this season...both of his afternoon wins have come on the road, at Minnesota (12-3) April 13 and at Chicago (4-1) July 19. VS. RAYS--Duff faces the Rays for the first time since August 11, 2011, when he suffered a 4-1 setback here at The Trop...in his only outing vs. Tampa Bay, he allowed three runs on five hits over 7.0 innings...he s 2-3 with a 4.88 ERA (15 ER in 27.2 IP) in five starts against A.L. East foes this season and 4-10 in his career. ON THE ROAD--Today is his 10th road start of the year, entering at 3-4 with a 4.27 ERA (25 ER in 52.2 IP)...he s alternated wins and losses over his last five starts away from The K, most recently, dropping a 4-1 decision at Fenway Park on August 20...he s 16-14 with a 3.56 ERA in 38 career road starts and 42 outings, holding the opposition to a.245 average in their home ballparks. GORDO CONTINUES REHAB ASSIGNMENT--Rawlings Gold Glove leftfielder Alex Gordon, out since July 9 with a left groin strain, continued his minor league injury rehabilitation assignment last night going 1-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and pair of walks in Omaha s 9-5 win at home over Fresno...he has gone 10-for-25 (.400) in seven rehab games with five runs scored, four driven in, two doubles, a homer and seven walks, compiling a.545 on-base pct. and 1.145 OPS. SKIPPER KEEPS ROLLING--Manager Ned Yost, who became the winningest skipper in franchise history earlier this year, has upped his career mark as the Kansas City manager to 453-451 with last night s win...it was a long road for Yost, who took the job on May 13, 2010, and in his first 2 1/2 seasons saw the Royals play 55 games under.500 at 198-253...since the start of 2013, Ned s troops have gone 255-198 for a.563 winning pct., which is the best record in the American League (Baltimore next at 244-209), and fourth-most wins in the Majors trailing only St. Louis (270), the Pirates (261) and Dodgers (258) in that span...he passed Royals Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog as the winningest skipper in team annals when he captured win #411 on June 18 vs. the Brewers...Ned s 910 career wins, which include 457 with Milwaukee, rank 68th all-time, tying Jimy Williams for 67th and sixth among active managers. WINNING THE CLOSE ONES--Not surprisingly with the total number of victories this year and the lockdown bullpen, the Royals also lead the Majors with the best winning percentage in one-run games, with Friday night s 3-2 triumph upping Kansas City to 22-11 for a.667 pct...both the Pirates (28-15) and Cubs (28-17) have won more single tally decisions this year, but their winning pct. in those affairs are.651 and.622, respectively...last year s eventual A.L. Championship club actually scuffled in one-run contests with a 22-25 record. DIVISIONAL WORK--Last night s win put the Royals to 17-13 vs. the A.L. East this year, including a 7-3 mark during this 11-game stretch that started in Boston (2-2) and then home vs. Baltimore (3-1)...after today, KC will have three games remaining against the East on September 11-13 in Baltimore...Kansas City has a combined 63-36 record against the other divisions and other league...the Royals have a 13-6 mark vs. the National League this year with one to go on September 28 in Chicago when KC and the Cubs will make-up a May 30 rainout in Wrigley Field... dating back to the start of 2014, KC has the best Interleague record in the Majors at 28-11... Kansas City has a 32-19 record within the Central, the best intradivision mark in the A.L...the Royals are 18-11 vs. the West, with just a 3-game series against Seattle left on the slate. THE BRUISE BROTHERS--With a pair of hit batters last night, the Rays jumped over the Royals for the A.L. lead in bruises with 65, while KC s been plunked 64 times...mike Moustakas is tied with teammate Alex Gordon and the Rays Logan Forsythe for third in the A.L. with 12 bruises...gordon, out nearly two months with a left groin strain, has still been hit one more time this year than his previous career high established last year...lorenzo Cain is tied for eighth with nine, Alcides Escobar is tied for 17th with seven...the club record is 89 in 2007. HOME STREAK ROLLS ON--Thursday s win over the Orioles gave KC three wins in four games and extended the club s home series winning streak to eight dating back to a 4-game sweep of the Rays back in early July...Kansas City has gone 13-3 in its last 16 affairs in The K...dating back to July 5, Kansas City possesses a big league best 22-6 ledger in its last 28 home games and has an overall home mark of 45-21, the second most home wins in the A.L...the Royals have already eclipsed their home win total from a year ago (42-39) with 15 regular season games remaining at home. A VIEW FROM ABOVE--Kansas City enters today in possession of a 14-game advantage in the A.L. Central, which is the largest of any division in the Majors...in fact, the Royals 7-game lead for best record in the American League is bigger than any other Major League club s divisional advantage...kc s lead peaked at 14 1/2 after play on August 19, the largest KC has experienced since 1980, when that eventual A.L. championship squad saw its lead expand to as many as 20 games as late as August 31, 1980...today marks the 111th day the Royals have been in first place this year...kc is 31 games over.500 for the first time since the end of the 1980 season (97-65)... KC s longest winning streak this year was a 7-0 start to the season, while the longest drought has been four games twice. THE K IS THE PLACE TO BE--The Royals eclipsed the 30,000 mark for the 49th time this year with Thursday s crowd of 31,155, posting a 31-18 ledger in those well attended affairs, while going 13-5 in the 18 home sellouts this year...kansas City blew past the 2,000,000 mark in 2015 season attendance in the 60th home date on August 14, marking the fastest that KC has eclipsed that milestone, three dates earlier than the 1989 campaign...this is the 13th time in franchise history that Kansas City has drawn at least two million, but the first time in 24 years (1991)...Kansas City s current per game average of 33,415 per game is an improvement of 10,035 per contest compared to 66 dates last year...when a bow is wrapped around the 2015 regular season, the Royals should shatter the team record of 2,477,700 set in 89. vs. Rays (2015) vs. Rays (career) On Road (career) vs. Karns (career) vs. Verlander (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Butera.000 3 0 0 0 Cain.500 12 6 2 6 Dyson.385 13 5 1 2 Escobar.357 28 10 0 3 Hosmer.231 26 6 0 3 Infante.250 16 4 0 1 Morales.333 24 8 1 8 Moustakas.375 8 3 0 3 Orlando.176 17 3 1 5 Perez.300 20 6 1 3 Rios.250 16 4 0 0 Zobrist.222 9 2 0 0.194 31 6 1 3.333 66 22 2 9.250 52 13 1 3.333 120 40 1 10.282 124 35 3 17.273 183 50 3 18.277 130 36 6 19.228 92 21 2 16.176 17 3 1 5.310 100 31 4 20.251 517 130 14 63.222 9 2 0 0.196 377 74 7 37.280 880 246 12 90.246 496 122 0 23.262 1803 473 13 153.284 1378 392 38 181.277 2641 732 52 281.268 1539 412 60 228.243 1197 291 37 126.188 85 16 2 6.275 1029 283 36 132.268 3270 876 71 371.275 2201 606 67 303.500 2 1 1 2.333 3 1 0 0.250 4 1 0 0.667 3 2 0 1.000 3 0 0 0.500 2 1 0 1.333 3 1 1 2.333 3 1 0 0.222 9 2 0 0.292 24 7 1 2.250 24 6 0 3.186 59 11 0 3.274 62 17 1 3.136 22 3 1 5.333 27 9 1 9.189 53 10 1 3.474 38 18 2 13.370 46 17 0 7.257 35 9 1 3 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
