2013-14 Green Bay Men s Basketball Game 6: Tulsa ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS Asst. AD/Communications: Andrew Gavin Email: gavina@uwgb.edu Office: 920.465.2498 Cell: 920.609.9682 Twitter: @GBGavin; @GBPhoenixMBB GREEN BAY (3-2) vs TULSA (1-5) November 29, 2013 9:00 PM CT Sullivan Arena Anchorage, Alaska Great Alaska Shootout SETTING THE STAGE Green Bay and Harvard fought back and forth for much of Friday night s semifinal contest of the Great Alaska Shootout, but in the end a dry spell on the offensive end was too much for the Phoenix to overcome in a 76-64 defeat. The Phoenix will look to bounce back on Saturday and claim third-place against Tulsa, which fell 72-65 to TCU in Friday s other semifinal. Danny Manning s Tulsa team is much better than its record would indicate. The team s losses include games against nationally-ranked opponents Wichita State and Creighton, and the Golden Hurricane defeated Indiana State 63-62 in the third-place game on Thursday night. In Green Bay s loss to Harvard, the Crimson used a 10-run late in the second half to turn a two-point deficit into an 8-point lead. Harvard then sank all 10 of its free throws in the final three minutes to seal the victory. THREE-POINT PLAY 1. CLOSE TO A GRAND: Sykes enters Saturday night s game with 986 career points, and with 14 or more points against Tulsa will become the program s 26th member of the 1,000-point club. The 5-foot-11 Chicago native would become the third fastest player in the program s Division I history to reach the milestone behind Tony Bennett (56 games) and Richard Sims (68 games). Saturday is Sykes 70th game, and the junior is averaging 14.3 points per game in his career. 2. SEEING 20/20: After totaling 26 points on Friday, Sykes has now scored 20 or more points in four-straight games (32, 21, 23, 26). He is the first Phoenix player to score 20 or more in at least four consecutive games since Jeff Nordgaard accomplished the feat in five-straight contests from Jan. 20-Feb. 10, 1996. 3. STREAKING SOPHOMORE: Sophomore Jordan Fouse has opened the 2013-14 season by extending two impressive statistical streaks. The 6-foot-7 sophomore wing has blocked at least one shot in 28-straight games. The reigning rebounding champion in the Horizon League has also grabbed five or more boards in 24 consecutive games. In five games this season, Fouse is averaging 8.6 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots. PROBABLE STARTERS No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. The Phoenix has now scored 90 or more points in back-to-back games for the first time since the 1971-72 season when Green Bay defeated Northland (Feb. 26, 1972; 106-71) and Milton (March 1, 1972; 98-80). SCORELESS STATLINE: With 97 points scored and five players in double figures in Thursday s win, it is surprising that one of the most impressive stat lines came from a player who finished with zero in the scoring column. Sophomore Jordan Fouse played 30 minutes and totaled seven rebounds, six steals, four assists and three blocked shots without committing a turnover. BLOCK PARTY: Green Bay came to Anchorage as the nation s top shot-blocking team at 10.33 blocks per game, and delivered 11 blocks on Thursday and nine rejections on Friday. On the season, Brown has 20 blocks, Jordan Fouse has 13 and Greg Mays has tallied eight blocks. Of the top-10 single-game team block shots efforts in program history, five have happened this year (13, 11, 9, 9, 9). MID-MAJOR POLL: Green Bay has vaulted up to No. 15 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll after holding steady at No. 21 for the first three polls. Three other teams from the field of the Great Alaska Shootout are in the poll, including Harvard (No. 4), Indiana State (No. 6) and Denver (No. 16) all represented in the poll. The 7-foot-1 Brown became the second-straight Phoenix player to win the weekly award after junior Keifer Sykes won on Nov. 18. Brown and Sykes are the first Phoenix teammates to win in back-to-back weeks since Ryan Tillema and Troy Cotton in 2008-09. HANDFUL OF HARDWARE: The fifth career Horizon League Player of the Week honor for Sykes ties him for the most in Green Bay history with Jeff Nordgaard. He also ranks tied for 12th in conference history, with former Detroit star Rashad Phillips holding the record with 10. The point guard won the award once as a freshman and three times in 2012-13. IN A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN: Senior Alec Brown opened this season in select company as the nation s only active player with 1,200-plus points, 600-plus rebounds and 200-plus blocks. Brown is only the second player in HL history to accumulate those numbers and is on pace to be the first league player to finish his career with 1,500 points, 750 rebounds and 250 blocks.
