HUGH JAQUES Through the 1920s and 30s, Hugh Jaques was a dominant figure around Whitlock. He was by far the longest hitter of his day off the tee and the rest of his game attested to his championship calibre. Hugh s Record: Quebec Amateur Champion - 1926, 1935 Repeat member of the Quebec Willingdon Cup Team Member of National Willingdon Cup champion team in 1927 Whitlock Club Champion - 1925, 1931, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1943 THE DARLING DYNASTY The Darling line started with Arthur J. Darling, one of the Club founders and its first President. One of his sons, A.B. (Bill) Darling was a fine golfer of note, winning eleven Club titles between 1927 and 1945 as well as the Western Canada Amateur Championship in 1929. In his day, Bill held the Whitlock course record of 66. Bill married Dora Virtue, a championship golfer in her own right. Dora started golf at an early age encouraged by Frank Grant, the club professional at the time. Dora captured the Canadian Ladies Golfing Union Open in 1936 and was the Quebec Amateur Champion on four occasions. She was also runner-up to this championship four times. She won the Club Championship a total of ten times spanning four decades. Her last major accomplishment was as Quebec Senior Amateur Champion in 1962. Bill and Dora saw to it that their children got an early start to the game. Their summer home was located in the shadows of the course and a chip and putt section of the garden was set aside to practice their skills. WHITLOCK - 100 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIPS 49

Judy, the eldest child, won her first major championship, the Quebec Junior crown, at the age of fifteen. She continued to win further titles in the junior ranks as well as Provincial and National championships throughout the fifties and sixties. A complete listing of her accomplishments is included in a separate section of this chapter. Judy s sister, Mary, was a three-time Quebec Junior Champion and a member of the Quebec Junior Team on several occasions. She later played on the Quebec Amateur Team. She was Club Champion seven times. Judy s brother, Brian, was twice named to the Quebec junior inter-provincial team in national competitions and a five time member of the Quebec team in matches against Ontario. Michael Darling, the son of Bill s brother Ted, was a four-time winner of the Quebec Junior Championship, a member of the Quebec Willingdon Cup Team on several occasions and a fourtime winner of the Club Championship. TOM HUNTER Tom had a distinguished golfing career over four decades. His achievement as Quebec Junior Champion was soon followed with the Quebec Four-Ball Championship three times along with being a six time member of the Quebec team competing for the Willingdon Cup. In the Seniors category, Tom was a Canadian Champion, a Quebec Champion four times as well as a nine time member of the Quebec team. His twelve time record as Club Champion has never been equalled nor has the ten times he won the Club s Senior Championship. In spite of his many successes in his home province, he never won the Quebec Amateur title although he was runner-up in 1951 and 1953. Tom s Record: National Canadian Senior Champion - 1984 Interprovincial 6 time member of the Quebec Willingdon Cup Team 9 time member of the Quebec Senior Team Provincial Quebec Junior Champion - 1940 Quebec Four-Ball Champion - 1954, 1956, 1961 Twice with Michael Darling (Whitlock) Once with Ron Neale (Summerlea) Quebec Senior Champion - 1977, 1979, 1985, 1987 Locally 12 time Club Champion between 1947 and 1977 10 time Senior Club Champion between 1974 and 1991 In 1996, a newly planted oak tree some 100 yards to the right of Hole 1 North along with a plaque commemorating Tommy s golfing achievements was dedicated in his memory at the Club s Tournament Closing on Labour Day Monday. 52 WHITLOCK - 100 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIPS

MARY PYKE Mary was a formidable golfer in the late 1940s and 1950s winning championships both nationally and provincially. She was also a member of the 1953 Canadian Team at the Commonwealth Matches. She was Club Champion in three decades. She was made an Honourary Life Member of the Club following her title as Canadian Close Champion in 1949. Mary s Record: International Member of the Canadian Team at the Commonwealth Matches - 1953 National Canadian Close Champion - 1949, 1956 Interprovincial Member of the Quebec Amateur Team - 1956, 1968 Provincial Quebec Amateur Champion - 1949, 1953 Locally Whitlock Club Champion - 1948, 1952, 1967 JOE LEBLANC Joe Leblanc was one of the best amateur golfers in the Montreal District and Quebec Province in the late 1940 s through the 1950 s. He was the Quebec Amateur Champion on two occasions, the second of which he combined with the Quebec Open Championship in the same year. The latter tournament was played at Whitlock and he thrilled the local gallery by finishing one stroke ahead of the well known professional Stan Leonard of British Columbia in the 36-hole competition. A newspaper account of one tournament of which he participated stated his time worn 1867 putter failed him badly. WHITLOCK - 100 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIPS 53

He was also a five time winner of the Club Championship. He later turned professional and joined a club in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Joe s Record: Quebec Amateur Champion - 1950, 1956 Quebec Open Champion - 1956 Member of the Quebec Willingdon Cup Team - 1954, 1955, 1956 Whitlock Club Champion - 1949, 1951, 1954, 1955. 1956 REMI LEFEBVRE Remi first came into prominence in 1956 when he won the Quebec Junior Championship. He followed this with the Quebec Amateur title two years later. He was Whitlock Club Champion a total of nine times spanning four decades from 1959 to 1989. He also won the Club Match Play Championship in 1986. Rémi s Record: Quebec Junior Champion - 1956 Quebec Amateur Champion - 1958 Whitlock Club Champion - 1959, 1973, 1974, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1989 Whitlock Match Play Champion - 1986 Rémi s brother, Yvon, won both the Quebec Amateur Championship and the Whitlock Club Championship in 1970. Tragically, he was killed in an automobile accident soon after. JUDY (DARLING) EVANS Judy is a prominent member of the Darling dynasty, the daughter of Bill and Dora (Virtue), both champions in their day. Judy s achievements started at an early age winning her first Quebec Junior Championship at the age of fifteen. She won her second of three junior crowns three years later and finished her junior 54 WHITLOCK - 100 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIPS

career with her third title the following year (1957). 1957 was a banner year for Judy. She also captured the Canadian Junior title and won the first of five consecutive Quebec Amateur crowns (1957-1961). She became the first Quebec woman golfer to win both the Junior and Amateur titles in the same year. In 1960, Judy finished as runner-up in the Canadian Close Amateur Championship but won the Canadian Open Championship in that year and repeated this achievement the following year. The Open win was a historic event, in that her mother won the Open title in 1936. Her fine showing earned her a selection to the Canadian Team at the Commonwealth Matches in both 1959 and 1963. Judy then took a vacation from competitive golf until the early 70s when she again won the Quebec Amateur Championship in 1972 for the sixth time. Not to be deterred, she and her sister Mary won the Quebec Four-Ball championship in 1979 and almost a decade later, in 1988, she became Quebec Senior Champion. Judy was inducted into the Quebec Golf Hall of Fame in 1998 and is also an honourary lifetime member of Whitlock. Judy s Record: International Member of the Canadian Team at the Commonwealth Matches - 1959, 1963 National Canadian Junior Champion - 1957 Canadian Open Champion - 1960, 1961 Interprovincial Member of the Quebec Amateur Team - 1956, 1961 Provincial Quebec Junior Champion - 1953, 1956, 1957 Quebec Amateur Champion - 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1972 WHITLOCK - 100 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIPS 55
