At 84 Lumber Arena: Tied 2-2-0 Atlantic Hockey Tournament: First Meeting Current Series Win Streak: Robert Morris, one game 2016-2017 Series: Tied 1-1-0 HC SET FOR QUARTERFINALS AT ROBERT MORRIS: The No. 5 seed Holy Cross men s hockey team (14-13-7, 11-10-7 AHC) will play a best two-out-of-three Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal series at No. 4 seed Robert Morris (19-11-4, 15-10-3 AHC) on March 10-12 at 7:05 p.m. The winner of the series will advance to the semifinals on March 17 in Rochester, N.Y. Both these teams earned a first round bye to the quarterfinals. The Crusaders have won two Atlantic Hockey championships (2004 & 2006). This will be the first-ever meeting in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament between these two programs. The Crusaders went 1-1-0 this season versus the Colonials with a 4-3 win on Jan. 27 and a 6-0 loss on Jan. 28. Both games were played in Worcester. The last time these two teams played in Pittsburgh was on Nov. 22-23, 2013. The Crusaders won 2-1 on Friday and lost 5-1 on Saturday. The all-time series at 84 Lumber Arena is tied at 2-2-0. The Crusaders are fifth in the league out of 11 teams by scoring 2.76 goals per game, while the Colonials are second with 3.15. Holy Cross is fifth in the league by allowing 2.86 goals per game, while the Colonials are fourth with a 2.53 average. The Crusaders lead Atlantic Hockey and are third nationally with the fewest penalty minutes per game with 9.6. The Crusaders are sixth in the AHC with a.175 power play percentage, while the Colonials are first with a.223 percentage. The Crusaders are 11th in the league with a.765 penalty kill percentage and the Colonials are fifth with a.840 percentage. THE SERIES WITH ROBERT MORRIS: These will be the 15th and 16th meetings between the two programs as Robert Morris leads the series 8-5-1. The season series is tied at 1-1-0. CRUSADERS ON A ROLL: The Crusaders are 8-5-4 over the last 17 games. Holy Cross has outscored its opponents 47-39. The Crusaders have posted 30.5 shots per game, while Holy Cross has held the opposition to just 25.4 shots per game. The Crusaders are 11-71 on the power play, while their opponents are 12-54. Holy Cross has outscored its opponents, 13-8 in the third period during this stretch. Sophomore forward Michael Laffin leads the team with 14 points during the last 17 games on six goals and eight assists. Junior forward Danny Lopez has seven goals and six assists for 13 points. Junior goalie Paul Berrafato has allowed 2.24 goals per game and posted a.912 save percentage over this 17-game stretch. LOPEZ FIFTH IN THE NATION IN POWER PLAY GOALS: Junior forward Danny Lopez is fifth in the nation with 12 power play goals. His 12 power play goals are second all-time in the program s Division I history. Tyler McGregor holds the record with 13 in 2005-2006. OUTSTANDING CAREER: Senior assistant captain Mike Barrett has played in 145 games which are tied for seventh all-time in the history of the program. He has 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points this season. His 16 assists are tied for first on the team. For his career, he has 43 goals and 55 assists for 98 points. On February 4, Barrett totaled four points with one goal and three assists as the Crusaders defeated AIC 8-2. His three assists tied for 10th all-time for a game in the program s Division I history. Then on Feb. 24, he tallied his first career hat-trick in the 5-4 overtime win at Bentley. LOPEZ LEADS THE TEAM IN SCORING: Junior forward Danny Lopez has posted at least one point in 25 of the 33 games he played this season. His 17 goals and 32 points lead the team. His 17 goals are tied for fourth in the league. His 17 goals are also tied for sixth in the Division I history of the program. On Friday, Feb. 3, Lopez netted his first hat trick of his career in the 8-2 win versus AIC. It was the 23rd hat trick in the Division I history of the program. Lopez posted a 14-game point streak which is the longest in the Division I history of the program. He has been named one of 23 semifinalists for the 65th Walter Brown Award as announced by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. The award is presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England. For his career, he has 30 goals and 24 assists for 54 points. Moore has 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points. For his career, Moore has 39 goals and 36 assists for 75 points. He set school records by recording two straight hat tricks as the Crusaders went 1-0-1 at Niagara on Oct. 7-8. Moore is the first player in the program s Division I history to record two straight hat tricks. He is also the first player to post three career hat tricks and the third Crusader to have a hat trick in a period. HOLDING ON TO THE LEAD: The Crusaders are 10-0-3 this season and 35-2-6 under head coach David Berard when leading after the second period. Holy Cross is also 8-0-3 this season and 24-3-4 under Berard when leading after the first period. The Crusaders are 9-0-2 this season when scoring the first goal of the game. BERRAFATO ON RICHTER AWARD WATCH LIST: Junior Paul Berrafato is one of 20 student-athletes named to the 2017 Mike Richter Award Watch List. The award honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men s hockey. Berrafato has three shutouts this season which are tied for second all-time for a season in the program s Division I history. His six career shutouts are also tied for second all-time. His 33 victories are also third and his 1,774 saves are fourth. His 2.46 career goals against average is ranked second all-time. COUGHLIN SCORING BIG GOALS: Sophomore defenseman Johnny Coughlin now has three game winners this season. Five of his seven career goals are game winners. BERARD IN THIRD SEASON AT HC: David Berard is currently in his third season at Holy Cross as the head coach of the men s ice hockey program in 2016-2017. In his three seasons at Holy Cross, the Crusaders are 46-44-17 overall and have posted a 39-28-17 record in Atlantic Hockey. TWO WINS OVER RANKED TEAMS: So far this season, the Crusaders have defeated two nationally ranked opponents, downing No. 11 Providence on Oct. 15 at the DCU Center and No. 20 Union on Nov. 1 at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. Providence won the 2015 national championship, while Union won the championship in 2014. After the loss to the Crusaders, Union has gone 8-1-1 and are currently No. 10 in the nation. This was the second time in a season in program history that the Crusaders have defeated two nationally ranked teams. FASTEST GOAL IN DI PROGRAM HISTORY: Holy Cross first goal versus Robert Morris on Jan. 27 was just 17 seconds after the opening face-off by senior assistant captain Mike Barrett. It is the fastest goal in the school s Division I program history. The previous record was set on Oct. 29, 2005 against Army West Point which happened at just 23 seconds of the first period. PLAYING EXTRA TIME: The Crusaders have played in 11 overtime games which ties the school record set in 2010-2011. The Crusaders are 2-2-7 this season in overtime. HC IN THE AHA QUARTERFINALS: The Crusaders are 8-16 all-time in Atlantic Hockey Tournament quarterfinal round games. Holy Cross has advanced to the semifinals four times and has failed to reach the semifinals eight times. During the first four years of the tournament, the quarterfinal round was a one-game playoff. In 2004 the Crusaders defeated AIC, in 2005 they defeated Sacred Heart, in 2006 they defeated AIC and in 2007 they lost at Air Force. The last five seasons the quarterfinal round has been a best-two-outthree series. In 2008, the Crusaders lost the series, 2-0, at RIT, in 2009 they lost the series at RIT, 2-1, in 2010 they lost on the road to Sacred Heart, 2-0, in 2011 they defeated Canisius in Worcester, 2-, in 2012 they lost at Mercyhurst, 2-1, and in 2013 they fell 2-1 at home versus Mercyhurst. Then in 2014, the Crusaders lost 2-0 at Mercyhurst and 2-0 versus Army West Point in 2016. HC IN THE AHC TOURNAMENT: The Crusaders have a 19-21 all-time record in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament as they have won two titles (2004 & 2006). Last year, The Crusaders fell 2-0 in a best two-out-of-three quarterfinal series at home versus Army West Point. The Crusaders fell to Niagara in 2015, 2-1, in a first round series. Three years ago, the Crusaders went 2-3 in the tournament with a 2-1 first round series-win versus RIT and a 2-0 quarterfinal series-loss at Mercyhurst. In 2013, the Crusaders fell to Mercyhurst, 2-1, in a quarterfinal series. The Crusaders went 3-2 in the 2012 tournament as they swept a first round series at home versus Army and then lost in three games at Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals. The Crusaders went 2-2 in the 2011 tournament and qualified for the semifinals for the first time since the 2006 tournament. Holy Cross won a quarterfinal series against Canisius, 2-1, at the Hart Center, and then lost to eventual champion Air Force by a 3-2 score in the semifinals. In the 2010 tournament, the Crusaders went 1-2 with a victory over AIC in the first round and two losses on the road to Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals. The Crusaders went 2-2 in the 2009 tournament with a win over AIC in the first round and a 2-1 quarterfinals series defeat at RIT. In 2008, Holy Cross was swept in the best two-out-of-three quarterfinal series at RIT as it lost two 5-4 overtime games. In 2007, Holy Cross lost at Air Force in the quarterfinals. In 2006 at the Hart Center, Holy Cross defeated AIC in the quarterfinals (3-1), UConn in the semifinals (4-1) and Bentley in the championship game (5-2), earning their second title and second NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2005, Holy Cross defeated Sacred Heart, 4-2, in the quarterfinals, but then fell to eventual champion Mercyhurst, 4-3 (OT), in the semifinals. Holy Cross won the first-ever Atlantic Hockey Tournament in 2004, earning the program s first ever spot in the NCAA Tournament. The Crusaders defeated AIC (5-0), Canisius (4-1) and Sacred Heart in the title game (4-0). In 1999, the Crusaders won the MAAC Tournament Championship by defeating Canisius, 4-3, in the finals. HC ON THE ROAD IN THE AHA TOURNAMENT: Holy Cross is 2-11 all-time in games on its opponent s home ice in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament with all of the games in the quarterfinals.
