Welcome to the Liberty Bank-Albaugh Inc.-DSM Hall of Fame Invitational. This is the 9th year of this event and it would not be possible without the support of sponsors, friends, and community. It is through their efforts that a tournament of this caliber can be hosted. Elkhart and Albaugh Inc. welcomes all of the teams that are represented. Many clubs have traveled a great distance to participate. Their attendance is appreciated. The community has worked hard to improve the fields and facilities and are proud to have World Class teams participating is the tournament. Albaugh Inc., the hosts of this tournament, goal is to play fast pitch at the highest level with local talent. Most of the team lives within twenty miles of Elkhart. Several of our players are third generation fast pitch softball players with relatives playing in the 1950 s and upwards. Jim Blanchard, Don Owen and Jason Vulk need a special thank you due to all their efforts behind the scenes in supporting the team. Jim and Don s organizing, fundraising, and continuous enthusiasm does not go unnoticed. Jason s is responsible for much of the dirty work from uniforms to this media guide. Softball Still Strong in Elkhart, Iowa Fast-pitch softball has been prominent in Elkhart, Iowa since the 1930 s when the old-timers called it kitten ball. Bill Fortune told the story that the Elkhart field was the first lighted softball field in Polk County. He and teammates, Herb Cory, Roy Sorenson, and Eddie Knight cut down trees from Sorenson s timber and used the trees still covered with bark for the poles around the field. They kept tree climbing cleats in the concession stand to change bulbs when needed. In 1995 the Elkhart Memorial Park Committee was formed. The original committee was Don Owen, Chairman, Bob Reinertson, Ron Adams, Dave Washington and Herb Cory. After Herb s death, Bill McLean became the newest member. Over the last twelve years, the park has received $23,500 from the Polk County Community Betterment Grant. With the grant money and donations from the City of Elkhart, the community, and many past ballplayers new lights, poles, fencing, and bleachers were purchased. A new concession stand and speaker stand were also constructed in 1995. In 1998 Neal and Bea Smith gave additional land so that the west diamond could be constructed. With the many teams using the diamonds for softball, little league baseball, and soccer it was necessary to add more parking space. Again the Smith s were generous to donate the needed land. In 2003 the handicap accessible restrooms were constructed. Rod and Dee Lein donated the scoreboard in 2006. Hopefully, needed money will be contributed for the new projects of better fencing and a shade structure. Even though men s fast-pitch may be declining across the United States, Elkhart has two men s fast-pitch teams calling Memorial Park home, Albaugh Inc. and the Elkhart Merchants.
During the 1960 s through the 1980 s Rod Lein and Ken Murphy of Ankeny were the umpiring team that worked most of Elkhart s softball games. Rod would work a doubleheader for $15.00 a night. Last year Rod and his wife Dee came to Elkhart to watch the Liberty Bank Invitational Tournament and thought the Elkhart Memorial Park complex was in great shape but needed a scoreboard. They donated money to purchase the remote controlled scoreboard and it was installed at the end of last year s season. It has been a great addition to the park and the community, softball teams, and the park board thank Rod and Dee for their generosity. Their donation was much greater than the amount of money Rod was ever paid for all his umpiring at Elkhart. However, good memories and great umpires are priceless.
